I have a lot of Love and Logic one-sheet PDFs (because I have my parent ed certificate) - some are targeted to toddlers and some targeted to middle childhood. Happy to send if people find it useful and give me a way to get it to them.
I also like the the concepts behind STEP (systematic training for effective parenting) and the corresponding book The Parent's Handbook. Published awhile ago but very relevant (and cheap on Amazon). The chapters on why children "misbehave" and how to target parenting based on the reason are extremely valuable. And yes, I hate the use of the word "training" in the program name, but it comes from the 80s and 90s parenting literature.
caveat: I'm not an STM but have heard some great testimonials from the parents I've worked with!
@libbberty after my Dad passed, my mom knew she needed help navigating the waters with a toddler and a single mom. She used STEP and I think I turned out pretty great lol.
On the subject of boy diaper changes- I just covered his penis with the used diaper once it hit the air and pointed it downwards so he could pee into the diaper and had a fresh one underneath ready to go. Also, erections are a thing. I was really weirded out the first time I saw it. For mine, it was usually an indicator that he had to pee or happened first thing in the morning.
@burnsmommy27@cyanope I have been following Janet Lansbury's page on FB for a while and am now reading her book No Bad Kids: Toddler Discipline Without Shame. I really like most of the ideas (based on Magda Gerber's RIE writing), it's about respecting the tiny humans as individuals and still giving them the structure and boundaries they need to feel safe about doing what they can independently. I'm kind of excited to have these ideas from the start with LO.
@burnsmommy27@cyanope have you read what to expect when expecting the toddler years? That helped me out a lot when i first had toddlers.
@BrandedCowgirl92 most things will go back as they were pre-pregnancy with aversion and such, but your ribs will stay wider (think bigger bra band size), your hips will stay wider, and Thor bobs will be droopier. Some tummies get flat again but you keep all the stretched as well, but they fade over time.
@schaze@lmmjd boy diapers are pretty easy, when you first Open the diaper and the air hits them, put it back down on him for a few seconds to catch any firehouse pee. For poop explosions clean front to back, and always point the penis down when securing a me diaper. 1 second baby erections are a thing, just be aware its normal through toddlerhood, then they go away til puberty.
With girls always clean front to back especially with poop so you don't accidentally push any inside.
Biggest diaper hint, to help hold liquid poops in, is to fold the top of the back of the diaper where it is thinner down inside. It makes a pocket and prevents the poop from gushing up and out the back.
Also baby acne is a thing as well as an extremely hairy baby especially if born early, but the hair goes away in a few weeks.
@BrandedCowgirl92, for me sense of smell continued to be heightened. After DD1, I couldn't eat yogurt for a long time. I didn't really have any symptoms hang on post DD2.
@egirl1025, I do know, from experience, that Fifth's Disease can be serious for pregnant women.
@maueraa07, one of my girls did have some bleeding, though I'd hardly call it a period.
@cyanope and @burnsmommy27, I like Positive Discipline, 123 Magic, Raising Human Beings, Peaceful Parent Happy Kids, the Your Three Year Old/Your Two Year Old ect books (there's one for each year), Unconditional Parenting, No Bad Kids
@whitta1218 - I'm dealing with the same thing but it extends from under my right boob to my side with occasional discomfort all the way around to my back. Bruised ribs is exactly what it feels like to me but I don't know. I mentioned it to my doctor as "discomfort in my ribs" and she didn't seem too concerned but I would mention it to yours as well. If mine persists, I'm going to mention it again.
How did you ladies deal with the little ones jumping/pushing on the bump. DS is almost 16 months and totally doesn't get it and still climbs all over me and pushes himself up on my stomach. I try to explain it and move his hands/body but it's constant.
@maueraa07 my niece plays pretty rough. Her mom told her she has to be careful because there's a baby in my belly and she looked at me, then looked at her baby sister, and said NOOOOOO and continued to use me as a jungle gym. She wasn't hurting me, I wasn't too concerned.
More uncomfortable is my 50lb dog with no spatial awareness. If only I could figure out how to explain it to him...
@maueraa07 DD is almost 15 months and is pretty rough. She's just now learning "gentle", so I've been very stern when she kicks/bangs her head against my stomach. I tell her brother is in there and she needs to be gentle with him. I also try to distract her when she seems upset or wants to rough house. Mostly, it's just keeping my fingers crossed that she doesn't hit too hard!
DS is all elbows and knees when he tries to climb on us, we've been working on it for a while because he inevitably gets me in the boob or DS in the balls and we need it to stop. Yesterday he walked past me and bumped his head on my belly didn't seem to notice though.
@schaze as @sbishop426 said, I also always had to put a small wash cloth over DS during diaper changes. I called them pee bibs. Baby wipes also worked but not as absorbent. DS peed on us ALL THE TIME. I refused to change a diaper with out a pee bib. As a PP said, I believe it was just a reaction to the air hitting him, but I could always tell it was coming because he would get super hard before peeing so I knew to speed things up. It gets easier as they get older, but the first probably 4-6 months were hard with the peeing lol.
Also, before starting solids when DS was still pooping the super liquidy poops, he would poop all over the changing table too during changes. I'll never forget, one time in the very early days, he pooped mid-diaper change and it literally blasted across the room. Like I'm talkin a 6 foot blast all over the carpet and walls. I literally screamed when that happened. Good times hahaha

I'm not mentally prepared for the projectile spit up. DS was such a happy little spitter-upper, didn't cry just spit up... everywhere. And one time we were driving and he was in his infant carseat and somehow spit up with enough force to hit the back of the seat. Hoping this one will just keep it to her clothes... and not the car.
@supercoolstephy I hadn't even thought about the spit up yet. DS never spit up. Like ever. He was our "trick baby". He was perfect and quiet and tricked us into having another, lol. I'm beginning to worry that DD won't be as easy as he was.
@supercoolstephy ugh my DS was a spitter, too! All day, every day, all the time, I shouldn't even have to warn people after a certain period of time because it was constant, spitter upper. He was a pretty fussy baby though. I'll be okay with this next one being a spitter just as long as she's happy, haha! If she's fussy like DS was, well at least I'll already know what to expect!
@steph30032 Same! DS was seriously such a good baby - I did not know it was possible for babies to come as happy and easy as he was. I'm nervous this one will be the opposite - I feel so ill-equipped for a fussy baby. I love your phrase "trick baby"! So true!
@GraceUponGrace09 and @steph30032 yes. DS was such a good baby and is a pretty good toddler with some normal toddlerness. Even when he spit up he was happy. I'm honestly so afraid this new one is going to come out ugly, and a jerk baby. Haha
I've been MIA for the last little bit due to back to school season...woof. Those 5 year olds have been near me for two weeks and they already gave me a cold! Anybody have any nice natural remedies or tips? Have a job interview in a couple of days that I wanna rock! xoxo
I mentioned before that I signed up for a hypnobirthing class that starts in October. Well, I just realized that I will have to miss one out of the five classes so now I'm thinking it probably doesn't make sense to take the class since I have to miss one. I know myself and I am not focused enough to do hypnobabies (I do realize they are different). Anyway, did anyone read any good books that they think helped them have an unmedicated birth? I'm open to any tips at all, not necessarily just books.
@ollydolly what are your symptoms? I like warm lemon water and honey when I feel crappy. Also, I swear by cold water mixed with cinnamon, cayenne and apple cider vinegar for a boost in the morning. You can mix in a little apple juice too. I like the taste of vinegar though.
@CANTW82BMOM I loved anything by ina may. Honestly, I just found reading/listening to positive birth stories to be the most useful. I would recommend some sort of birthing class with a natural birth focus even if you don't do hypnobirthing/hypnobabies

jakobaby it's just a typical head cold. Lots of sneezing, running nose, etc. Have been rocking the honey... Do you heat up your apple cider vinegar with honey? Or drink it straight up? I like it too. :-)
@CANTW82BMOM I agree with @KatieEl Ina May is great. I've also been watching a number of Hypnobabies birth videos. I know you said that you can't tolerate home study, but even watching the very calm and smooth birth videos has been really helpful for me.
ETA: You can find birth stories and videos on the Hypnobabies website. And youtube.
@CANTW82BMOMAlso wanted to mention that I've read reviews for a few Hypnobabies and Hypnobirthing classes in my area, and many couples mentioned missing even as many of half of the classes (typically 6 classes) and still finding it valuable/rave reviews. Of course, those reviews depend on a lot of criteria.
That said, I totally get the discomfort of missing, and that's why I went for the home study (and I'm going to do the "booster session" with a doula so I get some face time/it holds me accountable). Just wanted to toss out the research I'd done in case it helps you decide.
@maueraa07 Yes! I keep trying to compare bump pics and am definitely higher and bigger. Both girls too...so there goes the theory of carrying differently by baby's sex...
@maueraa07 Yes! My daughter got her first period about a week after I brought her home. No-one warned me about this so I was on the phone with the pedi in the middle of the night. It wasn't a lot of blood but you could see the blood on the wipe. Only lasted 2 days.
I can't tell if I'm carrying any differently, but he's definitely higher up than his sister. She liked to hang out by my cervix and he's more up by my ribs.
kind of a random question - a girlfriend of mine gave me TONS of girl and boy baby clothes... She has asked me to label them and hang on to them when we're done incase her sister in law has another. What is the best way to label these clothes that won't destroy them? I thought about a thin sharpie and writing her initial on the tag but was curious if anyone has any other suggestions.
Re: Questions for STM+ 9/13
@schaze boys are easier for sure! Don't worry - if you got along fine with a girl, you'll have no trouble!
