Would like to know if there are any ladies on here that live in Northern VA? Hubby and I are looking to relocate, and I have lived in CA my entire life so this is very new to me would like to pick your brain on where to house hunt.
  • Options
    @kperrucci like Arlington/Alexandria?
  • Loading the player...
  • Options
@doxiemoxie212 yep! We are thinking Arlington...but, are open to any opinions/suggestions! From there I guess we need to decide which neighborhoods/areas within Arlington.
  • Options
@kperrucci I grew up in the Bay Area (Marin) and then lived in D.C. for three years. We never lived in Arlington but we had/have friends who did/do. Have you visited at all? It's a really small area, so it's sort of hard to go wrong, but I personally would want to be either near old town Alexandria or walking distance to metro stops in north/mid Arlington. That said, DH and I have talked a lot about moving back (if going back to ca isn't an option), and I think we'd do chevy chase/Bethesda over norva just based on personal preference.
  • Options
@doxiemoxie212 yes! So helpful, and seems like you have similar preferences as us. We were thinking Old Town Alexandria or Northern/mid Arlington close to metro stations lol. We were both born and raised in San Jose...so not too far from Marin! Small world. I have looked at Bethesda/Chevy Chase, too. But not sure it's in our price range (hoping to buy something around $1m). We also worry about the commute from MD to McLean(where hubby will be working). We have visited in the past, but not since we decided to relocate. Going there in Sept to get a better idea of what we want. Thanks for the advice....I will probably PM you in the future to pick your brain some more if that's ok with you.
  • Options
@kperrucci yes def pm me. I'll tell you some restaurants in D.C. to check out ;) and re: price, it depends what you want, but that'd be around our budget, and there are def some options. But if your husband will be working in McLean you could even go further out. People love Reston. When we got married I had to go to the Tyson's mall every other weekend to buy/return stuff. It's nice out there.

@kperrucci I have no advice on northern VA, but I'm just jumping in to say hi to a fellow central coaster! I grew up in Santa Cruz. :)

AFM, I'm back at work this week with tons of faculty meetings. Classes start next week, so we're in the final countdown now! Also, I got a Stitch Fix box today, and now I have to decide which pieces I like enough to keep! The finalists are a dress (burgundy, fit & flare, above the knee), a cute cropped cardigan (black), and a button-up shirt (off-white with light blue vertical stripes). I buy most of my clothes used, so the prices on new clothes always seem outrageous to me. Decisions, decisions.

I'm so annoyed with a friend of mine right now. We usually try to plan a girls weekend at least once a year, and all connected with dates that would work for all of us. She had like ONE weekend a month through December that would work for her, and I asked if we could not do Dec because my husband's holiday party was  that weekend.
Turns out, the other girls can all only do the Dec weekend based on the extremely limited availability she gave. So I asked if we could explore one of the resort towns near me (I live about an hour north of the rest of them) and suggested a luxury resort with a spa, indoor pool, 5 restaurants, outlet shopping nearby, and a very reasonable off season rate. It would be about an hour and fifteen from my house so I could leave to make an appearance at the holiday party I already committed to, and spend the rest of the weekend with the girls. Two of the other three said that sounded like a blast, my one friend said "Sorry - Winter lodge isn't really my thing. Do something else, or have fun without me."
It's December in upstate NY- what else do you think we'll find to do? Why not lay out at the beach for a bit? *sarcasm* And it isn't a "Lodge"

Yes... just a rustic "lodge" *eyerolling so hard*
    I give up.

@olliegolly, ooh, that looks really nice! I'd love to visit the Adirondacks someday. Sorry your friend is being a pain about it!
  • Options
@olliegolly I would jump at the chance to do that. But my friends are just as difficult to make plans with, so I feel you.

I go back to work tomorrow to set up my classroom. Super nervous about my first day at my new school. The teacher that retired that I'm taking over for (my third grade teacher, who went on to teach first) left so much junk in the classroom that I now get to go in to clean out.

@olliegolly - LMAO, WTF does she think there is to do in December in NY? You offered spas, swimming, and a freaking ice bar. It really doesn't get better than that unless you're in to skiing/snowboarding or sledding -- which you can still do, and then go relax in the spa...

I'd also take your friend's place. What was she suggesting you guys do instead?

@izza2 Still waiting on her suggestions... I suggested the great escape indoor water park as an alternative... somehow I don't think that will float either - pun intended-

Has anyone read Big Little Lies? I loved the show, and I want to read the book, but I have a question: how much sex is in it? If there's sex in it, is it hot sex? I'm debating if I should start the book during FW or if there's no sex in it then wait until TWW. I need some motivation to get in the mood lol but I also want to read books I want to read. Trying to find a happy medium here.

@MrsBunz I don't know if I missed this elsewhere, but how are your grandparents? Did they leave Houston? I heard that MD Anderson is in a pretty hard hit area. Hoping they are okay.

@spottedginger why the eff did we need that Jasmine/Matt convo?

@doxiemoxie212  I've read the book and loved it!  It's been awhile since I read it, but I don't remember it being sex all the time or anything.  Great characters...you will for sure enjoy...although some of what is in the book was of course changed for the HBO show (character details, etc)

@dukestar5 ah, so I should wait until the TWW then? I'm looking for a sex all the time book for WTO ;)
  • Options
@doxiemoxie212  Ooooh, well, it's a really good read, but I'm not sure it's exactly want you need in TWW.  It's filled with intrigue and interesting characters, but not sure it would turn you on if you KWIM.  I read a romance novel several months ago that was pretty steamy (not specific sex scenes, but chemistry was out of control and made you want to jump your man).  Let me see if I can find the book and I'll PM you the title.  ;)

Avrilmai Thanks for checking in. My mom was finally able to convince them to leave Houston on Friday, a few hours before the highways started being closed due to flooding. They drove up to OK to stay with my grandpa's family, and will be staying there until they are able to head back to MD Anderson or she is referred to a different hospital for radiation.

@dukestar5 at this point I've read so many "romance" novels that I'm beyond the looks and stares and into full on written porn lol. It's just those books are not always the most..... interesting?.... beyond the sex? So it can be sort of tedious to read when you're basically reading them to give yourself the female version of blue balls so that you'll be more in the mood to GDTPD every effing night. lol

Next to the New Discussion button there is a down arrow that gives you a drop down menu that gives you the option to start a poll. That's on mobile, but I think desktop is similar.

@doxiemoxie212 I don't recall Big Little Lies being particularly saucy. I have read a few of Catherine Bybee's books, most recently Not Quite Enough. They have a bit more of a story line in them but they are still steamy. And an easy/quick read. *Possibly TMI or just not your thing* but DH and sometimes just actually watch porn together. I brought it up in a 4 hour long car ride once (maybe not the best idea but it did lead to us both sitting there with blue balls after talking about it) to figure out what we might both be into. Then one night I just brought my laptop into bed, found something, then texted him from upstairs.

@krashke I'll have DH watch porn if he's struggling, but I find it distracting. I just feel like the girls are faking it and they look dead in the eyes etc. I need that tension build of reading something sexy so I'm thinking about sex a lot. The best example of this for me was The Hacker Series.

@doxiemoxie212 I will have to look into those books!

Lol I remember the thread about the cervix sweaters. Things sometimes got weird on The Bump a few years ago.

It's my last official day to set up my room and I'm nowhere near done. I think the teacher before me was a hoarder. Everywhere I look, there's more books.

I had this teacher for third grade. Was she a hoarder then and I just didn't notice?
