  • Does anyone else wake up in the middle of the night completely nauseous? It seems that between 2am-4am is my time.  I don't have nausea any other time during the day but for the past 3 nights it's been happening in the middle of the night?!?!

  • I feel like this has been asked before but can't remember. Can I get my hair highlighted during first trimester? I have a wedding in a few weeks and desperately need a little hair touch up before. I'll be 11 weeks when I'd get it done. I've heard some people say yes, it's not a big deal. And some say no. Thoughts? Do I need to ask my doc?
  • @npkat I was going to ask that to but thought it had been asked before but couldn't find it!  I need mine done badly!

  • @becausescience Yes! Extra points to the slowly as sucking on anything is icky right now.

@bookworm40 Everything @vflux33 said. Experiencing the same thing sometimes so I just get up and eat/drink whatever I can habdle.

@npkat Most hairstylists that I know are very cautious and typically have their own rules anyways. But I also know OBs differ on this so I think it's worth the call just to plan. Also, ACOG website is an amazing resource.
  • Most people say highlights are okay because the color doesn't sit on your scalp like it does when you're doing all over color. (But idk because the last I dyed my hair was in high school and I did it at home.)

  • @npkat and @bookworm40 highlights do touch you scalp so shouldn't be a big deal but your hormones can effect the way you highlights come up. I have a couple clients that I have to boost their developer when they are pregnant unfortunately you don't know until you try...

  • @npkat I just called my OB about this last week and she said hair dye was not a concern.  :)
  • @bookworm40 same boat as you and @vflux33 that is pretty much my time frame as well (except I also have all-day nausea wooo) haha

For my gal pals that are suffering from some hard morning sickness as well - are you trying to track what you eat at all? Before getting KU'd, I ate super clean and tracked everything I ate (used my fitness pal to track calories and macros along with my fit bit, etc.). Since getting KU'd I have been so sick that it is hit or miss on what I can/cannot eat. I haven't tracked anything because it is all over the place.

With 2nd trimester nearing, I know that you are supposed to increase by 300 calories a day. Are you just hoping to begin feeling better and tracking in 2nd tri? What is your plan?

  • @bookworm40 I had the MOTN sickness from weeks 6 through 9 or so. I also had the all day sickness, so it really didn't surprise me too much, but it did make it worse knowing I couldn't even sleep to avoid it. The good news I can offer is that there is an endpoint!!

  • Yes! I just figured it was because I take my prenatal vitamins right before bed?
  • @bookworm40 It hasn't worked for me but a friend who's a few weeks ahead of me says that she leaves a protein bar on the nightstand. When she wakes up at night, she takes a couple of bites. Nausea or not. She says it helps MOTN nausea and has generally she doesn't wake up to immediate nausea in the mornings either.

I don't eat dairy because I do paleo. I've been reading a lot about how important calcium intake is during pregnancy. Do I need to bite the bullet and put dairy back in my diet, or can I take a supplement. I eat pretty healthy so I'm sure I'm getting some in what I eat, a lot of the foods considered the highest calcium non-dairy I do not eat much of if at all(figs, bok choy, molasses).

I would ask your doctor but I'm sure there are supplements you can take. There are plenty of people that can't eat dairy and have babies. :)
  • Sucking on lemon helps a lot to evade the nausea, even just smelling it helps. I pace around and try to distract myself. And eat some fresh sweet lime which also keeps the nausea down. But the best remedy is drinking a Lot of Water. I know you will constantly visit the restroom, but it's worth evading the nausea
  • @npkat I asked this a few days ago...most of the responses said they thought it was ok or their OB told them it was fine. I just started highlighting my hair again right before getting pregnant (of course!). I have my appt Monday and will ask, but I'll probably get it touched up.

I haven't had MOTN nausea this pregnancy, but did with my last. I kept Ritz and ginger ale by my bed because it seemed it was worse if I was hungry
  • Ok, cleaning/sanitization question here. We were gifted a really nice pack and play with our first, and we actually never ended up using it...it's one with a newborn seat that can detach, and a changing table. Becomes a bassinet, all that jazz. We have a 2 floor house now and I want to use it on the main floor for naps, changing, etc. here's my issue- my sister used to foster, and last year she brought up her foster baby and he used it. We found out shortly after that he had ringworm and actually gave it to some of the family members. It's been just sitting in a closet at my moms since then. How can I disinfect it 110%? The local mom group is basically telling my I'm crazy for not dumping it...is it ridiculous to think it can be sanitized properly?
  • @vflux33 Didn't your doctor make some recommendation about you changingthe plan and not stopping dairy right now because exposure could help the kids not be allergic to dairy? Asking for @npkat

  • @isntthatspeshul I really don't know anything about the actual sanitation process surrounding ringworm cleaning, but I know that high school wrestling teams specifically have dealt with ringworm spreading and they have to sanitize mats and other items. I know they don't trash their mats every time!! There must be a way to do it safely and in good time. I would Google it...and maybe ask some wrestling coaches (I'm probably over-estimating how many would have direct experience with this, but you never know  )

  • @isntthatspeshul I'm a germophobe so I disinfected my pack n play in the tub with basically everything I could find. The CDC has good info on what kills what. You'd be surprised!
  • @barrelocarol what cleaning items did you use?
  • @isntthatspeshul At the time, I didn't do any research so I just used a round of bleach, hosed it down, a round of Lysol, hosed it down, a round of Pine Sol, then kept hosing it down till there was no trace of smell.

No judgement for how overboard I went. I was just really sensitive to the smoke smell in it and couldn't deal.
  • @barrelocarol did you use a colorsafe bleach? I'm so new to this, I've never disinfected a large item like this before.

@isntthatspeshul Maybe don't listen to me bc I use regular bleach on everything including when I strip my son's cloth diapers. Aside from adult clothes, I blast things without regard for color or anything like that.  :|:|
  • Does anyone have recommendations for pregnancy books? (Other than What to Expect bc all I heard from friends was that it was anxiety-inducing.) I'm reading Expecting Better but I'd love some refs for more month(or week!)-by-month books. Thank you!!

White vinegar or rubbing alcohol. Spray the whole thing, let it sit for 10 minutes, wipe it down with a rag. Wash rag in hot water setting. The spores (ringworm is a fungus) don't last long without a host, so if it's been sitting for that long, it's probably dead anyway. I would still clean it, and then not worry about it.

  • @npkat @kiki75 The recommendation that I go dairy free (for PCOS) was from a naturopath and not an MD, just to be clear. And she also recommended I basically don't eat anything delicious, ever, and she wanted me to cut so many foods it was honestly pretty overwhelming and I'm glad I didn't do it. It was actually through talking to people here who work in medicine like @heatherdubrow who said that cutting dairy during pregnancy could lead to the child developing an allergy to dairy. I have not done my own independent research on this, but I decided to bring dairy back in (in moderation) in part because of wanting to avoid this possibility, and also since the potential benefits of quitting dairy for me personally (constipation, skin issues) were less likely to have a positive effect for me during pregnancy, and also since my aversions are eliminating so many other foods for me already and it felt silly to get rid of a whole additional food group stress-wise. So that's where I landed with the whole thing. I plan to try a longer period dairy free in the future but definitely not during pregnancy, and probably not until after BFing just in case there is a similar effect. THAT SAID, when I *thought* I was going to stay dairy free during pregnancy I was told by another nurse that nutrition during 1st tri wasn't a big concern, and that other foods besides dairy have plenty of calcium so in second tri to add more of those other vegetables that are high in calcium to offset the dairy reduction but, again, not to worry in first tri.

@ksmwalters I heard bad things about What to Expect too. There are some interesting articles out there about why people aren't into it. I ended up with the Mayo Clinic Guide to Healthy Pregnancy, which I like. It has a bunch of month by month chapters, but not super extensive week by week info if that's what you're looking for.
  • @vflux33 it was my kids' pediatrician who told me that about the dairy thing!
  • @heatherdubrow the whole dairy thing for allergies is that the recommendation now is to introduce dairy to your kids sooner rather than the old recs of a year+, which will help prevent allergies. Same with peanut butter. It would make sense too if mom is eating it while pregnant or breastfeeding that it might have some benefit as well, just have never heard it that way. Interesting!

@vflux33 I haven't had dairy in almost 3 years.. occasional cheese here and there of course but who can give up that completely :)? I'm planning on asking my doc when I see him in 2 weeks.

Thanks for yalls help and input!
  • Has anyone spotted? I have been spotting today and I'm freaking out.
  • Has anyone spotted? I have been spotting today and I'm freaking out.
I did a few weeks ago. My doctor told me it was normal and he wasn't too concerned unless there was cramping or clots. You could always call your doc and see if they think you need checked out though.

Does anyone have a doppler they recommend? I'm thinking about ordering one, just not sure if any are better than others.

  • @TennisLove30 I had some spotting a little over a week ago, and they had me come in early for my ultrasound. I have a "tiny" (doc's words) subchorionic hematoma that my OB said should resolve itself. I've also had friends who've had spotting in the past and there weren't any underlying issues. I'd say call your doc and see what they say - that's what they're here for, right?

  • @ksmwalters Yes, that is why they are there. My office was already closed and planned to call in the morning. I'm just hoping it's nothing.
  • @TennisLove30 I'll be thinking about you. Do they have an after-hours number you can call? I spoke with the midwife on call (it was after they'd closed when I saw the spotting as well) and she really helped settle my nerves. Either way I'm sending good vibes yours and your little bean's way!

  • @ksmwalters Thank you. I think they have an after hours number but I'll probably wait. I never spotted with my first pregnancy so I got worried, but from what I've read and asked it seems "fairly" normal in first tri. I'm taking it easy tonight. Fingers crossed.
  • @TennisLove30 I never spotted with my first, and turns out, almost all of my friends, including me, spotted in subsequent pregnancies.

Just to share my experience, my midwife said it's bc everything is a little more loosened up and more susceptible to fatigue. She told me to rest for the night and call her with any intense cramping or increased spotting.
