Baby Names

Thoughts on Odin ? help!

It is one of the only boy names DH and I have agreed on. I'm a teacher so it has been really hard! Is Odin too weird? What middle names would go with it?

Our last name is 3 syllables. It starts with R so I feel like that eliminates a lot of names. We love but can't use Isaac. Also like Nolan but I feel like it's really common.

Any suggestions?

Odin is a little out there for me but nothing wrong with it.  Why do you feel that the R last name eliminates many names?  Trying to avoid alliteration? Based on the names you like I'd suggest

    Alden
    Orson
    Elijah
    Isaiah
    Ian
    Eamon

  • I just feel like anything that ends in R kinda runs together with the last name, if that makes sense. My DH thinks I'm nuts. Maybe I am, ha ha

  • @moonlady-2 I feel you on the R last name, we have the same problem. Our bigger problem is it ending in -on which eliminates a ton of names. DS actually has a name that ends in -r and it doesn't run too badly, so don't count them all out! I'm also a teacher so I feel that pain too!

I actually like Odin, he probably won't share a name with anyone in class and it's a strong name.
  • I really like the name Odin. Its a strong masculine name, in my opinion. And although I have heard it, it isnt too common.
  • i like odin

    odin daneil
    odin matthew
    odin gabriel
    odin christopher
    odin joseph
  • I like it too! It's clearly a 'real name' but I don't think it's wildly popular right now so like others have said, there probably won't be tons of them in school with him.

I like the above suggestions for middle names. Odin James could work too.

  • I like Odin! I also like Nolan and used it for one of my kids. My other kids have a name above 500 and one not in the top 1000 so I too was worried about popularity but actually have only ran into a small handful of Nolans ever and he's always the only one in his class so I have no regrets. As for middle names

    Odin Ryan
    Odin Richard
    Odin Matthew
    Odin Russell
    Odin Thomas
    Odin Edward
    Odin Michael

  • I love Nolan, fwiw.

Odin is good too. I like Odin Joseph or Odin Louis.

  • We have a neighbor boy whose name is Odin. It is strong, relatively familiar and easy to pronounce. I like it!
  • I love Odin. If you want to embrace the Nordic roots firmly, here are some more middle name options:

    Odin Carl
    Odin Erling
    Odin Filip
    Odin Gunne
    Odin Hakon
    Odin Halle
    Odin Jarl
    Odin Johannes
    Odin Lars
    Odin Magnus
    Odin Sten
  • I don't like it - I'm not into superhero/mythological names for kids; I think they should be reserved for pets. But that's just my personal opinion.

I don't think Nolan is too common,
and I like the name - I can only think of Nolan Ryan. I have a 4 year old and a 1 year old (boys) and I've never met a kid named Nolan
  • I'm also in the "no mythological god names" camp.

Nolan is rising in popularity, clocking in at 65 on the SSA list for 2016.  However, for boy names, that means it's still not super-common.  It's only 0.279% of all boys born in 2016.  For instance, my son's name was in the 70s in his birth year, and he's consistently been the ONLY kid with his name in his entire school at all 3 schools he's attended, including a big, suburb an middle school that has more than 1000 kids.  For boys, once you get out of the top 20, the actual number of babies given that name really drops off.

  • Not a fan of Odin.  I think Nolan is a nice name.
  • I love Nolan and I've been teaching for 8 years and never had or came across a Nolan . Odin is okay, it's def a strong name.

I guess I'm the UO here, but I don't like that name.  It makes me think of Thor, so it seems sort of gimmicky.  Definitely prefer Nolan.

Also it would be so awkward if you have a boy who is more chess player than football player...
  • I'm not a fan. Every time I hear it I think "Odor".
For me it falls into the same category as Arnold and Oscar, nope.
