Re: Do you have any questions for STM+(s)?

  • @neener*neener*, 4th pregnancy that made it this far.

#1- didn't show until the third tri. Had evening nausea and usually skipped dinner- it never went away. 12 hours of labor that included 2 or so hours of pushing, ended up using a vaginal vacuum. I had an epi- it didn't work well for DD1 or I.

#2 -sometime around 17 weeks I started to look like I had a bit of a gut. This year the flu vax was a poor match and DD1 and I ended up with the flu within the first few weeks of my pregnancy. I can't remember much nausea wise- I just remember being too sick to get off of the couch for weeks on end. Fast labor and delivery- went all natural.

#3- (that ended at 16w) never showed. She measured smaller at each u/s. (I had them biweekly to monitor a SCH.) My due date was changed a few times; I don't even remember now how far I was based on LMP when we finally lost her. I do remember being nauseous AF.

#4- Depending on the time of day, I feel like I have a bit of a gut. But I also haven't been to the gym in a couple of weeks. I have been unbelievably exhausted this time around. The nausea seems to be more of an afternoon/evening thing like with DD1 and doesn't seem to be remotely subsiding.

  • Those of you that used nitrous oxide, has anyone had an adverse effects with that?  I had a panic attack and was nauseous using it during a dental appointment.  I've heard others have had that happen to them at the dentist.  Has anyone had this happen during labor?
Are used with the gas with my second pregnancy. Once my contractions actually ramped up and we're painful I was only in labour for 45 minutes, but I use the gas basically for the entire 45 minutes. The only adverse effect for me was a bit of nausea right at the end  right before I pushed him out.  I threw up a little bit in a little emesis basin.  Nothing major in my opinion. Definitely worth the relief that the gas brought. With my first I had an epidural and I really hated the fact that I had to have a catheter and couldn't properly use my legs for several hours after delivery. The little bit of nausea with the gas was by far preferable for me.
I  definitely would like to have the gas again this time if Possible.

    - Did you show earlier (are you showing earlier) with the 3rd pregnancy?
    - Was/Is your third pregnancy different from previous pregnancies?
    - Was labor quicker or easier for you?

I was 26 with my first, 31 with my 2nd and will be 34 when I have this baby. Just wondering how different it was for others. I'm 10 weeks and not showing at all (uterus is still super low). Bloat is unreal, but other than that, I feel pretty much like I did with the other two.

Forgot your other questions. My first two pregnancies were pretty much identical. Both girls. My first labor was 3 hours with a few minutes of pushing, and my second was 47 minutes with a couple grunts in <30 seconds (she descended very rapidly with hardly any heads up.) My third pregnancy was the most difficult of all. I actually had nausea and strong food aversions that lasted until 21ish weeks, and though I only threw up a few times, two of those times were in the third trimester. I had horrible anxiety and just felt really off throughout my entire pregnancy.

I developed edema at 29 weeks, and progressively worsening polyhydramnios at 30 weeks while on vacation. (I tend to think it was intuition that told something wasn't right.) By the start of 34 weeks I was measuring 15 weeks ahead and looked like I was carrying triplets. I ended up being induced via pitocin. AROM was to help relieve the excess fluid, but the issues surrounding my severe polyhydramnios made active labor slower to start. It only lasted 1 hour and 40 minutes with no pushing. He slid out in a gush of water. (TW: The issues I presented with were related to his esophageal and gastrointestinal malformations that we weren't aware of.)

By contrast, my next pregnancy was nearly identical to my first two, and "labor" was pretty much non-existent. What I experienced wasn't labor. He just basically shot out via maternal-fetal ejection reflex. It was very similar with #5. Not a whole lot going on, I thought, until just minutes before her birth.

With #'s 1, 2, 4 and 5, I didn't start "labor" until in transition, hence why they don't last very long. I was 4 cm upon admittance, and 5 cm when contractions started with #3, and that was after pitocin when my uterus had time to decompress from being severely over-distended.

  • I thought of this question reading the STM purchases thread, but I don't want to hijack that thread so I'm going to revive this one:

Our plan is to have baby in the room for a few months (or maybe he'll go in the nursery right away if I can't get any sleep, we'll see), using a bassinet by the bed for easy feeding and soothing. Did any of you use a Pack N Play with the bassinet in your room for the baby to sleep in? Instead of the Halo or other type of bassinet? Any recommendations of one over the other? Is it worth it to have both in the house? I'm having a c-section so getting up in the beginning will be difficult.

I used the Graco Travel Pack and Play top setting (no newborn insert).  It worked well for us for both of our kids and I plan to use it for this one as well. It was compact enough to fit comfortably within the room right next to our bed and still offered constructed stability with compact option to fold it up and go if needed.

As for investing in multiple options, what's your housing set up look like? With my son I had the travel sized pack n play in the bedroom and the Fisher Price Rock N Play downstairs in the living room until he was 3 or 4 months then I set up a full sized pack n play downstairs on the top setting for naps and such with the other pack n play in the bedroom upstairs. It helped a ton when I was moving around the house as I didn't feel limited or too far away if baby was napping while I was cooking, doing laundry, or cleaning.

I used a full size pack n play next to the bed for the first couple of weeks until DD slept through the night. It had the newborn sleep center on the top so as far as a c-section goes it doesn't require any bending. Just as pp said I think your set up depends on the layout of your house and also how you feel after the c-section.
  • I also had the pack and play with the bassinet and changing table topper. I’ll be using it again for the third kid. I liked that I still had the pack and play for travel so it didn’t feel like a wasted purchase when they outgrew the bassinet piece. And I liked having the changing area for MON changes, which was clutch with a C section to minimize moving/bending. Only downside was the weight limit is 15 lbs and my first son was huge and outgrew it in about 2 months. 2nd son however made it 3-4 months.
  • Our house set-up is crazy: It's a four-story townhouse, the second level is the main living area, nursery is on third level, and our master bedroom is on the fourth. I'm going to be in the guest bedroom on the third level for a couple weeks to avoid stairs. I was planning on having the rock n play on the main level for naps, then use the Graco Pack n Play as a bassinet in the guest room/master bedroom. This is the one I put on my registry (and my friend already bought):

  • We used a pack play with a bassinet attachment. Ours had mesh on the side, I probably would not use the one you have pictured for overnight sleep.

This looks like the exact pack and play we have, and used with DD. The napping addition flips over for a changing table, right? I had this in our living room with DD, so I had an area to change her/set her down for naps while I was doing stuff in the main part of the house. The napping insert is definitely something I only felt comfortable letting her sleep in while I was actively monitoring her (and I think the manual for the pack and play said the napping insert was only for napping while supervised, if I remember). If I wanted her to sleep in it overnight (which I sometimes did if I slept in the living room so I wouldn't wake up DH getting up and down all night), I just took out the napping/changing addition and set her in the base, in the raised position as pictured (with the mash sides). She slept in it just fine.

I had a c-section with DD and actually found it easiest to get DD out of her crib, raised to the highest setting. But maybe that's because of our individual crib; it was raised to a height where I barely had to bend over at all while standing, and I put it right next to our bed so I could get her out of it without even getting out of bed to nurse at night.

@precious88 I agree. I personally never used the newborn sleeper for safety considerations; If another child needed tending to and I dashed from the room, baby would no longer be closely monitored as instructed in the manual. The base setting on the pack n play on the elevated setting worked great for us.

This is what we used. That top part that snaps on is not for sleeping. The part that is kinda of hanging Midway down is the "bassinet" part. This is how DD slept for about 4.5 months. Mind you, ours did not come with a sheet so you may need to buy that separately.

We purchased the same type of pack n play, had it set up in our master bedroom for DS1, and he was a horrid sleeper. We found our sanity when we learned about swaddling properly (Highly recommend happiest baby on the block). Swaddling saved our sanity but my little guy couldn't lay flat, so a rock n play is what he slept in for 5 months. He did have torticollis and a flat spot on his head, but we believe that to be from him being engaged in the birth canal over 8 weeks (I was on strict bedrest and went into labor at 32 wks... he was born at 38wks). Now, looking back, I wish we had taken him to the chiropractor... I think that would have helped a lot.

Moral of this rambling post is that it is good to have options. We even tried having him sleep in the swing (big "no no" .. I know) for a night or two because I was so exhausted. He didn't sleep more than 3 hours in a row for the first month... and I breastfed... very tiring.

We're getting either a halo co-sleeper or arms reach co-sleeper this time because it will bring baby right up next to me without the baby being in danger from me sleeping to heavily etc. I hope this one will be able to sleep flat, if not, we have a rock-n-play if needed.
  • @eggplantface with DS we were hoping to use a pack n play in our room for sleeping. He. Hated. It. So. Much. He screamed his head off if we even tried to lay him in there. Didn't matter if he was swaddled, or even if I still had a hand on him. He reacted the same way to his crib. So we used the rock n play and it was a miracle. We used it until we sleep trained around 6 months. We got some feedback from the pediatrician about flat spots and trying to maximize tummy time (which he also despised).

This is time though, I'm debating between trying the halo bassinet (I'll be a repeat c section) or trying to see if the baby will accept sleeping in their crib. I slept so terribly with my son in the room (I woke with every gurgle and grunt) and I'm wondering if the crib would work better for everyone.

I love my snoogle. My husband is already dreading it coming back into bed with us, haha.
This. I love my snoogle because I'm a stomach sleeper and this is he only way I can sleep when pregnant. My husband hates it. You probably need a king size bed to use it
We have a king sized bed and I plan on taking as much as I need lol.
We sleep on a queen and DH gets the bare minimum of space to sleep before falling off because of my snoogle. He honestly just ended up curling up with it too so we sleep both kind of attached to it.

  • In addition to Happiest Baby on the Block, I was recommended Eat, Sleep, Poop. Haven't read either of them, yet!
  • Thank you for all of the suggestions! I'm going to buy a couple of them and hopefully I will feel at least a little bit prepared when February rolls around :D
  • @caitb13 if you have a bookstore close by and have the time, I recommend going and flipping through the books versus reading the reviews and sample pages on Amazon.  There were a bunch I thought I wanted first time around based on the Amazon reviews but then when I actually flipped through at the bookstore I decided against.
  • @Ashoes123 That's a really good idea. I'm big into online shopping (even though we have plenty of stores nearby) but I need to keep reminding myself, especially shopping for baby stuff, that online reviews are based on a person's individual needs and frame of reference and I'm probably better off going to a store and deciding for myself.
  • Do any of you have advice on how to handle tough family conversations when it comes to who you will and won't let visit the baby during the first couple of months?

A little background:  My sister-in-law does not vaccinate her two kids, both of whom are under 5 years old.  (Her kids, her decision - I'm not trying to instigate a vaccine debate in this thread by any means.)  Both kids tend to be sick/feverish a lot too.  She keeps them at home full time and they rarely interact with other kids so they've not built up much immunity and when they do go in public they tend to be more susceptible.   A lot of it is probably just normal bug/virus stuff kids deal with when they're young too.  Taking those things into consideration has led me to a decision that I don't want her kids coming to meet the baby until flu season is over and we've had our first set of shots.

Additionally, the pediatrician we'll be using attends our church so I talked with her about this last week.  She said she always tells parents of newborns, especially those born during flu season, that babies should not be exposed to any kids under the age of 5 (except siblings, of course) until after their first set of shots at 2 months.  Standard practice here (not sure about other areas) is to admit any infant who has a fever of 100+ degrees and hasn't received those initial shots to the hospital for 2 days.  She explained why they do that and made me even determined to enforce the 'no kid visitors' rule.  She suggested Facetime as a good alternative for the kids for the first couple of months.

I'm curious to hear about any experiences you've had with these kind of conversations, especially when it comes to the family dynamic and how to best deliver the message.  I'm concerned because the kids are so excited about having a new little cousin and will be hurt and confused when they can't meet the baby right away.  And my sister-in-law definitely won't be pleased when I say no. Even if you had different family members or situations you were concerned about I'd love to hear how you approached the discussion and anything you might do differently next time.

  • @fatted_calf I’d say that’s just a conversation you have to be honest about. Part of the parenting that sucks sometimes is awkward conversations that are necessary for your child’s safety. And I would word it just like that— “I have an awkward request that i have to tell you about even though I really don’t want to make you upset...” lessen the mood but don’t back down.

Ive had similar conversations about who visits in the hospital, my kids diet, car seat safety... etc. it never ends.

  • @fatted_calf just blame your pediatrician. "Just wanted to give you a heads up that our pedi said no visitors under five until two month shots". If this is your husband's family I would make him have that conversation, she will likely take it better coming from her own family. I wouldn't even mention the lack of vaccines.

  • Maybe a silly question but how many ‘nursing specific’ tops do you need. Are they worth the money rather than trying to make do with regular tops.

@pandappanderson four breast feed babies in and I have never had a nursing specific top (or bra for that matter). I usually tried one of two things:

    1. Lower shirt and just pull the boob out the top. I usually would wear a fashionable scarf in order to cover the top of the breast to make things more discrete.

    2. I would wear a tank top and a regular shirt over top. I'd pull the tank down enough to uncover the breast and pull the regular shirt up to uncover the breast. This was my favorite approach because your sides and top were covered so it is very discrete (which is important for me) and it actually gives you a lot of space to get baby latched

This is my third and I would recommend two bras and two tank tops with built in bras. Anything you put over them can be lifted so you can just use regular tops.

@pandappanderson unlike PP I always wore either a nursing tank or a nursing bra while out with LO. It was easier for me than messing around with a regular bra...Especially if it had an underwire. That said at home I didn’t care at all so I didn’t need to many. I think I had 3 tanks and 3 bras. It was plenty.

Edit:  I didn’t buy specific nursing clothes though. I did the two shirt method  as mentioned above,  or made sure I could pull the shirt down.
