Measuring small?

Hey there! So, I just came home from my 8week US and I am measuring at 6weeks2days. I am so certain of my dates! I mean, how could I have gotten pregnant RIGHT before getting my next period?!?! It doesn't make sense to me. The heartbeat was 126, which is reassuring. But my doctor told me to be prepared for a miscarriage. I go back in 10 days for a follow up US to see if the baby is catching up. Anyone have something similar happen with positive or negative results?

Re: Measuring small?

  • Were you temping or taking OPKs so you know when you ovulated? You could have ovulated late and thus be behind. I really hope that's the case and you get good news!

  • I test my cervical mucus and follow body signs of ovulation. But who knows. This body is wacky as hell. I hope that's the case too. Thank you for responding. Any reassuring words help!!!
  • I measured small at my first US and the next one growth was right on track. I was pretty sure of my dates too but must have ovulated late! Your doc probably told you that just in case, since measuring small *can* be an indicator of a problem if your dates are actually accurate, but there are other possible explanations for measuring small so hopefully all will be just fine at your next one! Sorry for the stressful news, I was super nervous when I got that result too!

  • Sending positive thoughts your way!  Will be looking for updates!
  • I don't know why it bothers me when doctors do that. If everything looked healthy I wish they could have just stayed positive for you. I know it's their job but that's just shitty since you will have that worry in your head for the next couple weeks.  I'll be thinking of you!

And just my personal story. With DD2 I went in thinking I was 7.5 weeks and was only measuring around 5 weeks 6 days. I thought for sure I had all my dates right. I just ovulated way later then I thought. Hope that's the case for you!

  • @jillkain84 I hope you get good news at your next appointment! Like others said there's a good chance you could have just ovulated later than you thought.
  • I can't offer a success story or a failed pregnancy story yet. I'm going through the same thing right now. My follow up ultrasound is Tuesday. Praying that we both get good news. The waiting is awful. ::hugs::

  • Thank, everyone! I'll keep you posted. Ultrasound is on the 17th! Waaay too long to wait!
  • With my son my first u/s was 6w2d with a HB. Which was off from my period, but I knew I had to have ovulated later based on when we had sex, but that was still a little behind what I thought it should be. I had an ultrasound exactly 1 week later and he measured 7w6d which correlated to well to when we would have concieved.
  • With my daughter, I measured behind my entire pregnancy and my due date was ultimately 2 weeks behind my original EDD. I was overdue when my whopping 9lbs 10oz daughter was born. I have little faith in those dating estimates, personally.  I sincerely hope there's nothing to worry about for you!

I was small at my 6.5 week ultrasound, then measured 8.2 weeks at my 9.1 day ultrasound and doc was VERY pleased, had a heartbeat of 167 or so and we even saw baby do a flip and move!! She didn't say anything was wrong, except that since it got bigger (from 0.78 to 1.8) that we would go with the later due date, so an official Valentine's baby for us! So cheer up, buttercup, we can apparently measure small and then catch up. It totally happens!
  • My doctor told me that sometimes it's hard to get an accurate measurement when they're so early. They get better when the baby is larger at 10 weeks or so. I was supposed to be almost 8 weeks but measured 7w1d. I wasn't temping or testing **TW** and my cycles have been wacky since my d&c in February. Heartrate was 150 so that was good. Doctor was concerned that I was a week behind my LMP date but agreed I could have ovulated late. He scheduled a followup US at 10 weeks as he said he could get a better view then. He did warn me that I wasn't out of the woods but agreed that making it past 6 weeks & getting a HB were excellent milestones.
