Hi guys, So, this may need to be updated because my little man is supposed to come home tomorrow, and I didn't want to write this till he came home, but I've finally had a moment of peace. Tw this could be traumatic, I don't think it was, but I just want to be careful. Went in for my final ultrasound at 39 + 5 and baby measured 9 pounds 12 oz. Doc said we should just induce today because baby is so big the risk of shoulder dysplasia is high so we should not wait till the scheduled induction. I go home, get my things/husband and go to birth center. Hubby and I are super excited for LO to come, pitocin is started at about 6 pm Thursday night and we play Mario kart on the switch blah blah blah, still happy. By midnight the contractions are getting...bad. I've never asked for pain meds but I figured I needed them, they check me. Score they give them, I haven't dilated any more than where I was when I started, 3 cm. I'm upset because at this point I've had steady contractions for about 5 hours. Anywho they give me the pain meds and it knocks me out immediately. I wake up at 6 am in terrible pain, contractions are awful. They check me. 3 cm. Meanwhile they have been upping the pitocin the whole time. We repeat this process until 6 pm Friday night. So the midwife decides to cut the pitocin and let me sleep and try again Saturday morning. I'm really upset, tired, haven't seen my kids in two days, but I take a hot shower and decide to try again. Before I get in the shower I notice my iv is bent (the one giving pit). They think I wasn't getting the full dose because the person who gave me the iv did it wrong. Great.
Saturday morning we try again, pitocin still does not work so they break my water. 5 hours later it's time to push. Baby is biiiig. 2 hours of pushing and Miles is here, at 10 lb 2 oz! Buuut he has a broken clavicle and severe bruising (I was surprisingly fine, just two stitches). Now everything is great until his 24 hour tests when he fails his bilirubin. After a few days of treatment we come home (Wednesday morning). I am not sure why, bc his bilirubin was going up when we left. I called the pediatrician immediately and she said to bring him in first thing in the morning and she'll test it again. His bilirubin had gone up a huge amount since we left the hospital. Now he is in a different NICU. He is supposed to come home tomorrow but I'm not getting my hopes up. It's been a hard week and I will be really happy to have Miles home.
@JDBtwinmama Ugh sorry to hear you're still waiting on baby to come home. I know how it can be waiting for those bilirubin levels to drop. So frustrating. Hang in there.. they will come down soon and you guys will be home enjoying him!
Thanks everybody! I think the hardest part is that we expected no NICU time after having so much with the twins. He's definitely worth all the trouble though!
@JDBtwinmama Not that it is any easier, but at least this time you are a NICU pro after experiencing it with your twins! Praying that Miles DOES get to come home tomorrow, and you can all be together!!
My baby boy arrived Monday night 7/31/17. I was supposed to be a scheduled induction on Sunday evening, but my induction time got pushed back several hours because of room availability at the hospital for non-emergencies. When I finally got called to go into the hospital for the induction when a room opened up, I was already starting to have regular contractions.
When I arrived at the hospital, my contractions were 5 minutes apart and becoming stronger, so it looked like I was already going into labor. (I had regular contractions about every 10 minutes the prior three evenings that would disappear overnight.) Multiple people were unable to get a good cervical check, so nobody knew how dilated I was. My contractions continued to get stronger and closer together. After 14 hours of labor, I finally requested an epidural. I had been waiting to get the epidural until I knew how I was progressing, and I still wanted to be able to get up and walk around for awhile.
I regret not asking for the epidural earlier. I felt like my body could relax after getting it. (I would highly recommend getting an epidural. I felt like I could enjoy my birth experience more after having it placed.) After getting the epidural, a cervical check was done and I was only 1 cm dilated. I couldn't believe it. Pitocin was started to help make my contractions stronger to hopefully help me progress. Two hours later, I was 4 cm dilated, so they decided to break my water. I ended up progressing from 1 cm to 10 cm within less than 5 hours. I pushed for about half an hour. Baby was 8 pounds 8 ounces and 21 inches long. I had some minor tearing, but unfortunately, one tear is in a very sensitive/painful location. Baby was healthy, and I was able to do skin-to-skin immediately. He also latched right away, and he has been a breastfeeding champ. I still can't believe that I'm now a mother to a beautiful healthy baby boy.
Landon has finally arrived! He came 1 days early from his due date via emergency c section. On the night of the 6th, my dad and I went out to dinner. My dad, who has been struggling with driving my car, was horrendous while driving home. I joked that his driving would put me into labor!
when we got home I kind of started to loose control of my bladder and dribble in my undies. I then checked them and noticed a pink tinge. I started to feel cramps so I took a bubble bath at 1 am. During the bath the contractions became regular and I decided it was time to leave for the hospital. I woke up my dad and in typical dad fashion, he took his time getting ready!!!!
got to the hospital and I was 3-4 cm. My doula (so recommend having one) positioned the peanut ball and got my to 4-5. I stayed at 5-6 cm for most of the day. By 8 pm he had made zero progress and had had multiple incidents where his heart rate would drop, requiring me to be hooked up on an oxygen mask. My dr came at 8 pm and told me I was having a c section and that I would be going into the OR in 5 minutes. I balled! I was so scared. My doula came in with me and at 8:51 I met my beautiful baby boy! My life just changed and now all I want is to keep him safe.
Because i I was so stressed, they gave me something for it. I was SOOO zoned out! I don't really remember too much of the delivery we are having a little feeding trouble right now because all he wants to do is sleep!
Audrey Nora came on 8/4 at exactly 37 weeks. I had been having contractions for what seemed like a week before going into labor as they would get frequent and then fizzle out. I felt like I was losing my mind. Anyway, so on Thursday 8/3 I'm having contractions per usual and at one point they were 10 minutes apart but then again, fizzled out. We took the kids to their Little Ninjas class at 5:30 and I noticed that my contractions were becoming much more frequent at 5-8 minutes apart and even some closer than that. They weren't very painful, but I was nervous as it's my third kid and everyone keep telling me how fast their third kids came. So, on the way home from their class I asked my sister in law if she would come over to watch the kids in case I needed to go in. I got home, put away laundry, put my son to bed, and then eventually called the nurse line to see if I should come in. They did want me to come in, so as soon as she arrived at 7:45 we hopped in the car and went to the hospital. I was checked and was 3cm and 50% effaced. On Monday, my doctor said I was 2cm and 70-80% effaced. The OB on call came in and said she wanted me to walk the hospital for 2 hours to see if my contractions would make my cervix dilate more. She also said she wouldn't be able to break my water until I was 37 weeks, which would happen at midnight. So, I walked from 9:30-11:30 non stop except to stop for contractions. They became very painful in this time. When I went back, I was 4cm and 80% effaced and they admitted me. My contractions gradually got less and less painful and intense on the monitor, though still coming 4-5 minutes apart. At 3am I was 5cm. At 4:30am I decided to get an epidural so she could break my water. Water broke at 5:15am. Contractions actually became less intense after that. At 8am, I was 6cm and they decided to give me a low dose of Pitocin. I also noticed around about 7am that my epidural was no longer effective on one side. They tried to re position me and put other medication in my IV, but I still felt everything on the right side. Contractions improved with the low dose of Pitocin but not high enough of an intensity that they wanted. They decided to up my pitocin to the next higher dose around 9:30 or 10. This made me extremely nervous because I'm a VBAC and my regular OB told me she doesn't do Pitocin at all for a VBAC. I was so close to just saying let me just get a RCS, but I went for it. The contractions were pretty bad on the low dose of Pitocin, so the anesthesiologist came in and asked if I wanted him to redo my epidural. I declined like an IDIOT because I really didn't want to go through getting another one and I was worried I'd have trouble sitting still. WORST DECISION. The next dose of Pitocin definitely upped my contractions and they were incredibly painful. I dilated from 6cm-9cm in an hour. I really felt like I had to push when she checked me at 9cm, and she told me lets wait another 10-15 minutes and she would check again and I should be dilated. I had one more contraction and screamed for my husband to make them come in. She checked me and said I was 10 cm. I pushed through about 5 contractions and out she came! 6 lbs 9 oz and 19 1/4 inches long. I had a tear near my urethra so she put my catheter back in. I also had another small tear somewhere else. Feeling a lot better now at 4 days postpartum! Oh yeah I forgot to add that my old roommate and good friend was also in labor at the same hospital and gave birth to her daughter 8 hours before I delivered Audrey! We got to meet up in the hallway in postpartum before we discharged home. That was super cool.
@OTmom3 I had to have my epidural re-done, the original lasted about for a while but around 4am Monday was not doing a thing even after they gave me a beginning dose. It didn't feel near as bad as the original going in, but definitely not fun.
Anyway, on 8/6 about 1am I started feeling super crampy, but not lasting too long and far apart. By noon they more tha. passed the 5-1-1 rule so I called the Dr. She told me it was fine to go in. So after getting final t hi ings together and getting through some contractions, we got to the hospital just after 3p. Only 1cm dialated, but my Dr expected I might have some issues and admitted me. I hit 3cm pretty quick, got my first epidural and started moving sides and peanut ball use. Checked on a lot, got a low fever so antibiotics were required, middle of the night had the epidural re-do. Morning I was 6cm and that is where I stayed. C-section just before 4, DD was born at 4:51pm. 8lb 5oz. I have been swollen and puffy. She likes sleep more than food. They have started me pumping bc she really isn't latching. Pumping is only getting tiny amounts of colostrum so she is getting formula right now. Hoping to see the L&C person today to work on that! Might even try to shower and walk around a bit later. Waiting on the nurse for meds/vitals as I type. Happy healthy little girl really needs to want food over sleep at some point. Maybe?!
edited for today: magnesium levels and some other stuff is low so I get to add a transfusion to my list of todays activities. Here I was hoping rough delivery = easier recovery. Not excited, but Drs. Orders. Hopefully the gas and swelling go down today so I at least have something going for healing. Hope all you mamas are doing well!
TW: 1 infant loss 8/17: Our daughter was born 8/18: Our daughter kicked open heart surgery ass 2/19: We lost our son to Prader-Willi/Paradoxical Vocal Cord/ Noonans at 6wks old 4/26/2020: EDD for baby #3!!!
This is a bit long, but I like having all the details recorded for myself.
I woke up around 5 feeling what I thought were gas pain. I slept awhile longer and when I woke up it occurred to me that it could be labor, so I timed them and they were happening about every 15 min. I let DH know texted my mom to start driving and got back in bed to cuddle DS.
At around 9:30 I texted our doula and some friends in case my mom wasn’t going to make it in time, to watch Connor. My contractions were getting closer together but were inconsistent and only about 30 secs. No rush, but I also know I can progress quickly. The doula arrived around 10:30 and my mom showed up soon after. We all hung out at home while I made good progress. I was still talking through most of them and they were not a minute long yet, so still no rush. I decided to go to the bathroom while I still had time between contractions to relax and once I did that I felt an urge to push and they started coming much closer together, so we decided to head out.
I was able to walk to labor and delivery and get checked in stopping for breaks on the way. When we got to our room the nurse strapped me to monitors and I had to labor on my back. It was horrible, if I had to do that for hours I would have had to get an epidural. While I was laying there the nurse was checking me in but not in a rush because I was so calm about everything. I think she noticed how close my contractions were and decided to stop what she was doing to check me, and I was complete! I knew I was close but was surprised I was all the way and I think the nurse was shocked. She went to page the doctor because baby girl was coming.
While she was gone my doula had me flip to my hands and knees and it was so much better because I could rock and sway during contractions. The nurse came back and kept fussing with me during contractions which was frustrating. She was trying to put in the saline lock in when my doctor arrived. The doctor said to forget about it, we were having the baby right now. She also didn't make me flip to my back which was amazing.
I started pushing pretty much as soon as the doctor got there. My water broke on the first push and the pressure was really intense. I had a moment of panic because it was the most pain I had been in and I knew there was no relief until baby was out. I think I vocalized wanting to be done and my whole body tensed up, but my doula rubbed my back and soothed me and I was able to get a little more under control. After my water broke I think it took 4 pushes and she was out. The whole thing took a little over 8 hours. I posted a picture in the home birth thread of me about 40ish minutes before the baby arrived, if anyone is interested.
Recovery has been a lot easier this time. The only remaining pain I have is in my right leg, the whole side feels bruised. I had to get an ultrasound on it to make sure I did not have blood clots but it all checked out. It is just not the pain I was expecting to be dealing with.
I'll share, even though it's not super exciting as I had a scheduled c section. DS1 was born via c section due to being breech, so this little guy was a RCS (practice doesn't do vbacs and I don't think I would have been comfortable with it any way). RCS was scheduled for 39 weeks so I didn't risk going into labor. We arrived at the hospital at 6:15, checked in, and I was placed in a prep room. I got fluids via IV and took the shot of antacids (gag). DH helped fill out the paperwork for placenta donation. At 7:45 the anesthesiologist came in and started my epidural. I wound up having to get a 2nd dose of meds because my doctor got hung up with a problem patient. My BP dropped a couple times and I had to have meds to bring it back up. I felt queasy when it dropped and it was not pleasant. My c section was originally scheduled for 8:15, but it was around 9 when I got to the operating room. Eli Ward was born at 9:13 AM on Aug 4th. He cried immediately and put our minds at ease. DH went with him to recovery while they stitched me up. He latched on right away. He weighed 8 pounds and 1 oz and was 20.5 inches long. The doctor came by and told us his chord was wrapped around his neck 2 times making us super thankful for the c section.
At exactly 38 weeks pregnant my water broke after I woke up in the morning. I immediately started having contractions but they weren't consistent until about 1pm (4 hours later). By the time I got to the hospital my contractions were 30 seconds to 1 minute apart and so friggen painful. The discouraging part was that I was only 1.5 cm dilated. I hung out like that until 5ish and and when they checked me again I was still only 1.5 cm even though my contractions were still so close together. I finally requested the epidural because I was getting no break and in agony. Epidural was amazing and I could finally relax. They gave some pitocon to increase the intensity of contractions and kept doing that for the rest of the night.
My epidural started to wear off in the middle of the night so I requested a boost but got the wicked shakes from it for like 2 hours. This was also the point where I spiked a really high fever (102.5) and the baby's heart rate started getting too high. Because my water had been broken for about 20 hours at that point, all signs pointed to infection. So they decided to do another check around 530am and I was finally 10cm! The problem was that they only agreed to let me push for 1 hour because of my fever and the baby's heart rate. So I pushed my little heart out and while I made some good progress, the time had come where he just needed to come out. So c-section it was. That went pretty quick and he came out crying thankfully! If it wasn't for the fever and high heart rate, I could have pushed him out but we just needed to do what was best at the time for our baby.
**Possible TW**The unfortunate part is that he's now in the NICU for the next 7 days due to infection. I wasn't able to really do any skin to skin and haven't been able to breastfeed. I've been pumping and supplementing with formula. I'm finally going to give breastfeeding a try this afternoon now that the oxygen is off of his face. Totally not how I thought this experience would be, especially that we would be going home without him. **End TW**But in the end I'm glad he's here and he makes our hearts so happy. Oh, and he was a big boy for being 2 weeks early! 8lbs 5 oz 20.5" long!
@mrsjqg1024 that's quite the experience!!! I'm so sorry baby is in the NICU. One of my best friends had a NICU baby and couldn't do lots of the things you're talking about, so know that the sadness you're feeling is totally normal. One of the things I've heard with NICU babies is to hard core celebrate ALL the milestones, so if you're breastfeeding today, celebrate that milestone big time! Thinking of you both!
Ok sharing my story too. After having contractions on/off all night and morning, my doctor said to come in to be checked out. Went in, since I was 4cm my doctor said she tobcall the hospital and to go over to L&D to have the baby. Got to L&D around 1:45pm, got petocin around 2:30pm. I was about 5 cm at 3pm and they decided to break my water @5pm as I hadn't progressed. After breaking my water, I was 9.5cm by 5:30pm and told to push. I proceeded to push on/off until 9:30pm. The head doctor who arrived at 9:30 had me push for him and diagnosed baby was "Brow presentation" and literally stuck. He said every time I pushed she wouldn't budge and she forehead first. Face first is dangerous but deliverable with foreceps but not forehead first. The doctors previous had been trying to turn her with no avail and this doctor said she won't budge and I have to have a C-section. I was terrified as my previous 2 were vaginal but I just wanted baby out safely. During the section he said she was totally jammed and further confirmed the need. Anyways, it was not a typical "easy 3rd baby birth" but we are so in love and so happy my baby girl is healthy and happy. We love her to pieces.
This time around I had a planned c section based on my first birth and my risk to have another emergency. My c section was planned for 9am on August 16 and at 4am that day my water broke (dramatics! LOL)
we get to the hospital and they they give us the option to either try a natural birth or just bump up the c section. We chose to bump up my c section as I had mentally prepared for this for the majority of my pregnancy.
Good thing we decided to go with our c section as planned, as my uterus was so thin, they knicked the baby's head with the scalpel. They also said if I would of tried naturally, my uterus was so thin I would of most likely ruptured and hemorrhages, which would of been a much bigger emergency then my first birth. We now must wait a minimum of 2 years before even thinking of getting pregnant and I'll have to do some tests to see if I'll be able to carry again too.
However through all of this, we have a healthy, happy baby xo.

Baby #3 on the way due 8/19/17
we get to the hospital and they they give us the option to either try a natural birth or just bump up the c section.
