Baby Names

Thoughts on Cassidy?

I've always loved the name Cassidy for a girl, but when I mentioned the name to my husband, he innocently said "Cassidy, as in Butch Cassidy?".  I'll admit it was funny, but now I have a weird complex about this name association.  Does anyone else associate these names together?  My family is already jokingly referring to our future daughter as "little Butchy", but I wanted to see if other (normal) people would make this odd connection.

Thanks!

  • I do always think Butch Cassidy.

It feels dated on a girl to me. I would find it refreshing to hear on a boy.

  • I love the name Cassidy!
  • I would think of it briefly, too, but it's not something that would pop into the minds of her peer group. It is a pretty name. I imagine your family would have some trouble continuing to call your sweet little daughter "Butchy" once she's here, especially if you talk to them about it and let them know you'd prefer another nickname.

On the other hand, your daughter might get a kick out of it once she gets older. My grandfather's nickname for my grandmother was Butch because she'd always been a tough, feisty woman. She loved it.
  • TBH Cassidy was always one of my favorite girls names, but now it feels dated to me. I wasn't sure if it's because it actually was really popular at one point, or it's just that my taste has changed. Although looking at PPs I'm not the only one that feels that way.

  • I really like Cassidy. One of my cousins named her daughter this, and I thought it was classic and refreshing. It isn't dated to me, or at least not so much that it isn't usable now (like Heather or Jennifer). I wouldn't think Butch Cassidy. If you're looking for similar suggestions, I like Mallory too.
  • dated
it was trendy for girls a while back

on a boy it wouldnt be as bad
  • I too think of Butch. So does my husband. I also think David Cassidy. It's dated.

    Cassandra maybe?
  • I automatically think Law&Order: SVU - Brian Cassidy.  Not a fan for a girls first name.

Feels dated to me.  I don't think of Butch, but think of David Cassidy.

I like PP suggestion of Cassandra.  Pretty, feminine, underused and could be Cassie, Sandy, etc instead of Butchy!!
  • I immediately thought of the Grateful Dead song, Cassidy. So, to me it conjures up hippies.

  • Ummm...nms and I do also think of Butch Cassidy.  Would you use Cassie as a nn?

  • I love Cassidy nn Cass. I like Cassandra too but Cassidy is adorable.
  • Yes, I think we'd use Cassie as a nickname.  But right how we have a little girl Nora who we often call "Goose", so  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  • I adore the name Cassidy. Im a vet tech and we have a beagle come in named this. First time I had heard the name outside of Butch Cassidy. For me, I dont think of Butch Cassidy, I think of sweet little girl running around with her beagle. Obviously Im boas because I already love this name. Im a fan of the nickname Cass more than Cassie as well.

  • I think first David Cassidy and the Partridge Family, then Butch.  Neither of which are remotely feminine.
