@carries2018 I have mixed feelings about this. I COVETED the "participation" trophies I got as a kid and we quickly learned that I was highly motivated by trophies. So I worked my butt off all through high school and college to collect as many trophies as possible.
But I think I'm the exception more than the rule. In general, I think there are too many given out. But for me, it definitely got me to work harder because I wasn't satisfied with a smaller trophy.
Then again, not getting a trophy would have still motivated me just as much so.....I think I just talked myself out of it.

you do you, but the wave of "over parenting" gets on my nerves. like when you spend 45 min talking to your kid about why they need to do something, and you pull out a flow chart of options and choices. trust i understand some kids need that. but i am talking about these long winded talks that are more so for the parents not the child. give them a choice of A of B and set them free.
i hate tipping. it is confusing i dont know who i am supposed to tip and who i am not. i wish every place that requires tipping just increased their prices to include it.
I think it's super crappy that after paying well over $100 for highlights, you still have to pay like $30 or more extra for a "blowdry." I always protest by leaving with wet hair.
@carries2018 The "Everyone gets a trophy" for a little kids turns into "Everyone thinks they should get an A without doing anything" in high school. I'm SO with you on that one.

my hairdresser won't let me! she says she wants to blowdry it to make sure it came out ok. i mean i can't complain too much bc she is 50% of the cost of my last hairdresser. but i am like i dont need this i am going to sleep!
@carries2018 I'm already beginning to chicken out of this appt. I'm cutting corners because I don't want to wait a month (!!!!!) for the other amazing girl at my normal salon. I really should spring for the blow dry so I can make sure it's not terrible prior to leaving. I'm just cheap.
eta: also my brothers wedding is in 3 weeks and she can't fit me in before that and I want to look prettttttty
I don't get why folks pay hundreds upon hundreds of dollars for pure bred dogs when you can adopt a fantastic dog from a shelter or rescue. I have a friend who flew to Oklahoma from California to pick up a Papillon dog. Why???

Participation trophies make me want to punch babies in the face. You didn't win. You don't deserve a trophy.
The overparenting thing drives me nuts as well. I was listening to a mommy podcast a while back and someone was talking about like.. sitting down and having long drawn out conversations about feelings and why the kid was feeling the way they were feeling and it's doesn't sound bad when I try and explain it right now but I swear it was so whack. Your kid isn't adult, let them be a kid for a while. The hippy-dippy trend gets on my nerves. I have a friend who has 2 kids and we were out at the mall and they were going INSANE and she just let them run around like psychopaths. I wanted to tell her to get control of her damn kids because it was so embarrassing but she has a very hands off approach.
once i was behind someone at 5 guys with a kid and ordering took 75 years "what do you want on your burger?" ::silence:: "do you want onions? pickles? bbq sauce? a1 sauce? tomatoes? grilled mushrooms?..." FFS you know what your kid likes. if you are unsure of a topping "hey DD1 do you want ketchup today?"
I totally understand if you are looking for a specific breed, but you might luck out at a shelter and there are specific breed rescues. But a rescue dog knows that they were saved (especially if from a kill-shelter). They never forget. When we get a place with more space to roam around, we want to adopt a dog.

The shelter we got our dogs from have breed lists - so if you *are* looking for a specific breed, you can add your name to the list and if they get one in, they call people on the waiting list. I mean, we just walked in and got the ones we fell in love with, but I thought that was a great alternative for the people who insist they just *have* to have a certain breed.

@carries2018 I got my Maltese when I was 21 for $1700, super smart decision living by myself and with a $20k barely annual salary. She is pretty fantastic, though.
@brambles23 I wouldn't do that again, that's for sure. DH and I feel strongly that we will adopt our next. All the homeless dogs out there break our hearts
I'm all about them shelter *cats. Not a dog person. But I highly recommend to people shelter animals!! They are just so loving and thankful to have their own humans ima cry just thinking about it.
we really wanted a bulldog, i grew up with boxers H had a pug...it was like making them into one. and their health issues i wanted to be smart about it. we used our wedding money for him. but no matter how "smart" i was their health issues still suck. and he is a PITA. after DD2 was born we spent $2K+ on him for emergency surgery bc he ate 3 pacis.
DH bought a Maltese for over $500. To this day he won't tell me how much he actually paid because I flamed him so hard for paying that much for a dog. We kept him for about 6mo before his mom stole him from us. That dog has been her world for three years though, and he's such a destructive dog that sometimes I think we dodged a bullet.
i love dogs, i always said i would make sure my kids grew up with dogs. at this point i will be shocked if our dog is alive 2 years from now (he is 6 now). after he goes, i am not getting another dog until the kids are older. like youngest 4 or 5.
I think what's even worse is I bought my dachshund for $60 outside of a casino in Oklahoma. The lady told me she was a rescue. Lolz. I thought I was getting a bargain! I love her, but I've probably spent about 10 grand (rough estimate) in vet bills over the last 8 years (7k just this last November). So, jokes on me! I'm sure I just bought her from some backyard breeder. I keep trying to tell myself that at least she's lucky that she ended up with me since I'm willing to keep her alive and shell out the big bucks. I realize I could have bought like a nice used reliable Honda for what I've paid in vet bills.
On the other hand, my mutt (boxer/lab mix) is a total tank and nothing brings him down. Love him. However, I bought him in a Burger King parking lot.
I realize now I've made horrible decisions regarding buying animals.
Years...YEARS...MANY YEARS from now when DH and I decide to adopt another dog (when our current dogs leave this planet) we've already decided to get an older dog from a shelter.
@bluejeanbabi05 I read that as, "Corgi butts are pretty much my FACE" and I really had to think about that. I need more coffee.
- wanting a specific breed - wanting a specifice age of pup - wanting to make sure parents have had proper genetic testing for breeds that tend to have diseases - not wanting to wait on a waiting list to get all of the above
I definitely see the value in rescuing shelter dogs, but it's not for everyone. Not everyone's lifestyle can accommodate it and in many ways getting a young puppy can mean avoiding certain behavioral issues that were ingrained before you were able to adopt the animal.

@dumbledoredies about 4-5 years ago we fostered a litter of kittens that we found while tearing down a section of our fence. They were only a few days old. It was bittersweet to see them go. We already had 3 cats at the time, so we didn't need anymore.
June 2017 Siggy Challenge: "You had one job to do!"
i do agree with @jessfishy there are reasons for going to a breeder, and i don't think they should be shamed for it. next time i dont know what we will do. we have a lifestyle we can only accommodate a certain "type" of dog. meaning low energy. a lot of rescue dogs have some type of lab in them, which really doesn't work for us. not ruling it out, and like i said we will be done with dogs for awhile, and our lifestyle could change. but i want to be fair to whatever dog we do bring home. but my original reasons for wanting a bulldog are so not even on my radar anymore. i was a young kidless kid. i didnt know what i was doing.
Also, we have a pomeranian that we adopted from someone who had bought her from a breeder. Good lord, never again will I have a double-coated breed. Also she will be toothless by the time it's over. She's not a chewer so her teeth are pretty much doomed. She lost TEN a few months ago, but at least now she doesn't smell like she's dying on the inside.
ETA: I say "lost" as in she had to go to the doggie dentist and have them removed.
