October 2017 Moms

Teachers Lounge

i saw this on another BMB board and thought it was a super cute and fun idea!

I know we have a good amount of teachers here in October, so feel free to share your most recent teaching stories!

Anything funny happen? Wanna throat punch anyone? Juicy gossip? Share!

Ill start! I'm officially on summer break, but my last week teaching, the kids were congratulating me on our new baby boy! One of the girls looks at me, and in front of the whole class asks, "how do babies get in your stomach?" Another boy responded, "ewww, it's so gross! You don't wanna know, trust me." I quickly shut it down and said okay, let's get back to work!!! Thankfully it died! It's a public school so I couldn't even pull the "god gives you one." Haha. These were third graders mind you! I hope her mom was able to cure her curiosity!

I'm upgrading my certification right now, through a local university. The class I'm taking now requires an action research project. I'm thinking of doing interactive notebooks to help my kids better use their notes and examples. Anyone use them before?

I'm jealous of you guys on (or almost on) summer break. We go until the end of June.

I'm trying to get my mat leave sorted out right now. I'm in Canada, so I can take a year if I want. Our school year starts in September and I don't see the point of going back for 6 weeks. I think it would be better for the kids to start the year with the teacher they'll have for the rest of the year. But...we get paid through salary advance in August. I'm scared that if I take sick leave for September, they'll claw back my August pay. I can't go a month without getting paid. I've got a call into my union. Hopefully they can help me out!

@nalex420 good to know!  I'm planning on just doing one unit with one class for my project and if it goes well, starting it from September when I go back to work. I'll be doing it for a solving equations unit in grade 8 Math.
  • @nalex420 sounds fun for math! Never thought to do for math! I'm stealing this for when I go back! Lol

My instructional coach is terrible and makes our lives harder instead of easier. She made a terrible review packet for us to use and when I told her some of the answers were wrong she said I was not being nice and had to leave early because of the emotional abuse I inflicted on her. Yawn. Sorry you're bad at your job.
  • High school music teacher here! We have five more weeks and I am so done... except I'm not, because we still have a fundraiser, a festival, a concert, and graduation to perform at.
  • Three weeks left here.  One of my seniors on Friday yelled at me for my coffee.  "What are you doing? You can't drink that." Umm sweetie it is decaf.

    Gotta love seniors!
  • We are done end of may! I'm mentally done with this year. I teach at a pay for performance school so we have lots of evaluations throughout the year and I just got done with my final summative performance review and did pretty good for my "2nd" year teaching...though this is really my 5th year teaching but they didn't count my other years from a different state because I didn't have data to prove my effectiveness. I'm ready for the wrap up with my classes now and to shut down the kitchens for the summer.

Yay Teachers!  We have 6 weeks left.  I teach mostly seniors, which ends up being pretty nice since they graduate a week before school lets out and take their exams the week before that.  The hard part for me is essentially done by Memorial Day!  Earlier this year, I put in a request to offer a standard level Statistics class in the county (we only have AP right now) and it was accepted.  I will definitely use my extra time to do some major work on that and get things mapped out for next year when I am on maternity leave.

My AP Stats kids take their AP test on Thursday this week...I hope they are ready!

@shan24 and @nalex420   A colleague of mine did interactive notebooks with her high school geometry classes last year and said it went VERY well!

@megggosaurusrex   Gosh, I'm so glad my Instructional Coordinator is not the only one filled with drama.  We are due to start state testing in one week and she's had a knee replacement and is at home on leave.  She insisted that she was going to do everything from home and didn't let them hire a sub for her.  She's been posting on facebook and making it seem like the school is forcing her to do this.  Kind of your fault dude...you are not a martyr!  This will be a train wreck!

@asickles98  I teach Seniors too!  I am constantly amused at how interested they are in my pregnancy.  I know we are having a boy, but won't tell them until it's confirmed at my AS in 2 weeks.  They are DYING to know.  It's very sweet.

I am also in my "second" year of teaching for the same reason! Super annoying but I did win "Beginning Teacher of the Year" since the state believes I'm still in my first 3 years.

I haaaaaaate martyr teachers. My principal does it too... always mentioning things she does that are clearly supposed to impress us with how "above and beyond" she goes for us. Ugh.
  • I don't teach full time since I run an afterschool program in a high school but I do co teach a 10th grade advisory class twice a week and a 12th grade internship class twice a week. All the kids have mentally checked out since spring break last month so it's been a struggle to get them to care about end of year state exams, even when their graduation depends on them.

Classes run through mid June and then there's a week of testing. But on the other side of my job is helping to supervise the summer program we run to help teens and young adults work for 6 weeks in July and Aug. Since early April my afternoons keep fluctuating between my 11th graders in afterschool or the hundreds of youth enrolling in the summer program, and it'll continue until end of May before I can shift more into "summer mode"

High school Spanish teacher here!  We have two weeks and 1 day left, no counting today! I'm soooo ready for summer break.  My students did find out today, that I'm team blue. They were all cheering for a girl since I already have two boys, but lil mister will be so completely loved.

  • I do a little of everything in my school. Music, English, French intervention, counselor, literacy, numeracy. And I love it. I get to see all of the students. We have a very small school (less than 200).
  • @JessDG I know!! I got them a cake today so they can have a party before I make them start their final project, lol.
