Appointments - Week of 4/24

Re: Appointments - Week of 4/24

  • DIY GBS test, no thank you. Mine is next week too.

@krex-2, does she update the agency often? I can't imagine the not knowing, that must be so hard. Hugs.
Usually once a week or so...but they haven't heard from her in the last week.  She might just have gotten busy...but yeah, I'm a stress bucket.

Hang in there @krex-2. You're in the home stretch and soon you won't have to worry about her communication, or lack thereof.

My doctor does growth scans at 30 weeks and then only does additional scans after that if baby is measuring on the big or small end. My insurance covers it as long as he has an indication for it, so I'm happy to have them.
  • My midwife only does an initial dating scan and anatomy scan unless something comes up. The dating scan was optional and very very quick but I was breastfeeding at the time and was unsure of my dates. In low risk pregnancies especially with midwives vs obs I think its pretty standard to only have an AS.

Are all of these growth scans normal? I had them weekly toward the end with my twins, but I haven't had an ultrasound since my a/s and won't have another one.
I think doctors are split on whether to do them routinely. My last ob did one at 36 weeks or so (but I was high risk with that pregnancy, so maybe that was why, I don't remember) but one of her partners actually told me that he knew of a study showing that a mom's guess about her baby's weight was more accurate than the scan. I think they don't like to rely on them unless they really need to because they are so inaccurate. My current ob doesn't do them because she feels that the risk of doing an unnecessary intervention based on inaccurate information is greater then the risk of not finding something out. Most people I know who have them have GD or other concerns having to do with growth.
  • With DS and DD, once I graduated to my OB (IVF kid over here) I only had two scans (NT and Anatomy).  With DD I had a post date scan (biophysical), but otherwise there wasn't a reason for extra scans.  With this LO, I'm only getting extra scans because of the 2VC so they are IUGR scans.

I got my TDAP today (blah) and OB noted that LO is back to head down.  Thank goodness.  Now stay put LO!  I have another IUGR scan at 35w followed that day by a prenatal with the always lovely GB strep test.  Honestly it is awkward, but not bad in the grand scheme of things.

I am a "geriatric" momma  (it is still so shocking to hear that term at 36!) and was over my ideal weight and my Dr.  is having me do growth scans every 4 weeks.  I'd rather be safe than sorry.

My blood pressure ticked up at my appt last week.  Not above the 140, but high for me.  I have to go in to get it checked this afternoon.  I tried to check it with a manual pump last week that my mom lent me (she is a nurse, and i am not!) and thought it looked really high, even though I don't really know what I'm doing.  Needless to say, I'm anxious, which i'm sure will do nothing to help my blood pressure.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @Waiting4Fred It definitely depends on your practice, your personal medical history, etc. My doctor typically does one ultrasound per trimester (unless you opt to do the NT scan), dating around 8 weeks, anatomy scan, and a growth, fluids, and position check around 30-34w. It's not at all uncommon for the anatomy scan to be your final scan of pregnancy in a normal situation.

  • We had a weird mini scan at our first appt, it was a handheld cell phone looking thing for about 30 sec to check heart beat. Then we had a dating scan and an anatomy scan. We're done now unless there is an emergency or something. It's a nice change from my dd. She had a dating scan, an emergency can't find the heartbeat scan, a follow up scan a few days later to see what was wrong, an anatomy, and a growth scan towards the end for gd.
Im very thankful for my lack of scans this time, it means everything is going as it should.

I wouldn't be having my scan tomorrow if it wasn't for my placenta being low at the anatomy scan. I am assuming it will have moved like a good placenta and this will be my last ultrasound. If everything seems low risk my OB says she can tell everything she needs to from the doppler and by feeling with her hands so scans aren't necessary in the third tri.

  • I had an additional scan at 28 weeks to check on my low lying placenta and will have another at 36 weeks to check on baby's position. She's still breech but has time to turn around.
  • My growth scans are for gd. I get them every 3 weeks and soon I think it's part of the bpp? I'm just having them for high risk reasons. Like PP said, it's usually good news if they aren't ramping up your monitoring in the end!

  • I don't have a routine OB appointment until next week but I did go to the chiro yesterday. She said that my hips have widened 3 inches in the last week and baby is very very low. Yikes!
  • With DS I only had the dating US and anatomy scan. This time around our additional ultrasounds are due to my placenta being low lying and then marginal previa. Depending on what this next one at 33 weeks shows we may or may not be done with them.

  • Had our midwife appointment today! We were there for over 2 hours!!! We both felt very comfortable with the nurse and the midwife that we met. We also made the rest of our appointments from now until the week after my due date! Ah! One thing she did tell us that I didn't know was that I don't have to get the tdap shot if I don't want to. She said there is evidence that the shot does go to the baby but not any evidence that it actually prevents whooping cough. I'm 99% sure I'm still going to get it though. This particular midwife seemed against it but said that others will have a different opinion. Anyone not get the tdap with this or past pregnancies?

  • Had an ob appt yesterday...since baby is breech an measuring big (93%) at last scan I will have another ultrasound around 35-36 weeks.

Last pregnancy I didn't not have any ultrasounds after the anatomy scan but now being high risk I am up to 7. I agree, less ultrasounds means everything is going as expected.

  • I wouldn't be having any additional scans after my anatomy scan - accept my anatomy scan showed a 'placenta lake' which could cause the baby to not grow on track - so I have monthly growth ultrasounds to make sure she stays on track and so far she has! Next appointment and US next week.
  • i know i mentioned this before but when i was working the ER a baby came in blue and passed a few moments later from GBS b/c the mother never got tested....truly heartbreaking

I haven't. I got it right before I got pregnant with DD1, and I'm still current.

I was specifically told by my family doctor to get a booster on my tetanus before getting pregnant since I wouldn't be able to get it while pregnant, so I'm not getting a TDAP either. She never specified why not to get it while pregnant, but I never thought to ask. My midwife has also never mentioned anything about getting it. Maybe it's different in Canada?

@CapricaAndrea Entirely possible that Canada is different - the CDC recommends getting it in each pregnancy since your body will make fresh antibodies which are capable of being passed to the baby and will provide some protection before they can be vaccinated. The pertussis vaccine is indeed not a particularly good / robust one (in that it "wears off" relatively quickly and doesn't prevent 100% of infections), but my personal opinion is that the benefits outweigh any risk here. End of my PSA....

I'm glad your appointment went so well! The part of your post that I bolded stood out to me because you should know that you never HAVE to do anything a provider recommends. You always have the right to consent or refuse, although obviously we all want providers who we trust enough to want to follow their instructions. The cdc recommends the tdap during every pregnancy regardless of how up to date you are for the reasons @c1tym0m22 said, so I follow that, but I hope you never feel like someone else can tell you that you have to do or not do something just because they said so!
  • @alm52386 I asked at my last appointment when I was going to be given shots since everyone was talking about it on here.  The nurse and OB both said I don't need to get any. They didn't recommend the tdap or talk about benefits and risks so I'm not planning on getting it. I had one 4 or 5 years ago so I don't think that I'd be considered "up to date". Worth mentioning...  my OB seems very laid back and hands off. He never mentioned the flu shot and I didn't get that either.

The tdap is good for 7-10 years, so you're up to date.

Agree. I had a very pushy ob with my first, but she couldn't make me do anything I didn't feel comfortable with. I ended up switching halfway through anyway to a better doctor. I don't do the dtap while pregnant either. My mom, brother, and I all react badly to that one so we skip it in our family.

Regarding the Tdap I saw one OB at my practice who basically said it was necessary and then another who just asked if it was something I would be interested in. I ended up getting it, but yeah the necessity of it varies. They offered the flu shot too but I declined and no one seemed to mind.
  • @ellie111227 I know I don't have to do anything I don't want to! I just thought it was something that most pregnant women got/did. Highly recommended like glucose test, gbs swab, things like that.

  • I had an appointment this morning. I'm about 35 weeks. Everything looked good. Baby is measuring in the 82th percentile and 6.1 lbs. Got to see her sweet face and the nurse said she had chubby cheeks :). My c section date looks like it might be moved up so we are looking at May 22 now instead of the 30th. I got back in 2 weeks to find out for sure
  • I had my 32 week appt today.  Everything is good.  Two different doctors reefed on my belly to try to tell if baby is head down. The consensus was that she is mostly head down but her head is slightly to the side (oblique?).  Anyway I'll probably have a scan around 36 weeks to see if she is in a good position, since DD was breech.

Had a routine appointment today. They checked my cervix because I've been having lots of BH contractions today, but all closed. I'm so uncomfortable. They also messed up my FMLA paperwork and the doctor that I talked to about leaving work early isn't in until late next week. Ugh. I'm in such a bad mood now.
  • @kdanjou oblique here too! I may ask at my next apt if I can try the exercises on the spinning babies website (which is kind of interesting to check out).
  • I saw my ob today, which was good because last night I started having this fairly intense pain in one really localized spot under my right boob, but no other new symptoms. I'm not sure whether I would have bothered calling about it if I want going in anyway, but I definitely would have worried it was my gal bladder or something. Anyway, my doctor felt around a bunch and tested pressure in different areas and worked her osteopath magic and figured out that it is a nerve in my rib cage being pinched, not an organ underneath it. So that is good, because it isn't harmful for the baby at all. But it is painful for me! She tried to stretch out my diaphragm on that side, which helped a little, but not much. Oh well. Seven more weeks!

@Elyse1384 how bad did the TDAP hurt?? Why do needles scare me so much lol??

In regards to the growth scans I have GD so that is why I had one at 34 weeks. With my first I only had the one A/S. And I can say my first u/s this week scared the crap out of me because it was inaccurate about the amount of fluid. I am not sure how much I trust them...
  • My midwife came for a home visit yesterday, which was awesome. And good news- he's head down! So that was a big relief.
She did give me a little scare though, she told me she was feeling kicks on my right hip and my left ribs and asked if I had had an ultrasound. Thought for a minute we were having a twin scare, but when I told her we've had 3 scans she said he must just have long arms! Lol

Tdap isn't my favorite - but I have an atypically bad reaction to them. Usually I run a fever, but this time it was just feeling icky and a big welt on my arm. I'll still take it instead of a newborn with whooping cough...
