Re: May IVF

  • Hey everyone, just catching up on all the posts since I last posted. I took some time off after our embryo loss which was much needed. We also had 13 relatives in town for a week for my husband's graduation so it's been a bit hectic to say the least! I'm starting week 2 of 3 weeks of BCP and ancy to start stims again! I planned a short vacation road trip next week to destress before stims and hopefully give IVF a better chance of working this time.

@funkykey welcome! I can't say "good" to see you here but you know what I mean.
@daisy222-2 glad the cyst is taken care of so you can move on with your treatment! I have to say, a 2 foot long needle makes me feel like I'm gonna faint!
  • @2MomsHoping Congrats on your embabies!  Hoping they all keep growing nice and strong for you!!

@MMD1986 Glad to hear your US went well!  Now we just need all those follies to keep growing together!!  I laugh when I get my menupar for a cycle as its boxes and boxes I do 4 powders, I laugh at the day that I use to do 2.  I guess my body need the extra dosage!  We do what we have to in hopes of getting to the finish line!

@daisy222-2 we can prepare for everything and our body just laughs at us and reminds us they have the last word!  Glad things are now back on track!

Momifbysea Happy graduation!  Nice to have so many to celebrate with!  Enjoy your relaxation, I'm sure its what the body ordered!!

AFM:  Had my US this morning and happy to say the 6 have stuck around and still growing and another lil one popped up on the left at 6.  Biggest is at 12 so I still have some time to go and pray they all keep on growing together.  I was in a panic as I took my meds 2hrs late last night so i was quite nervous about it.  I'm a freelancer and work project to project so I'm working on something short so its jam packed stress all at once, which is fine as I did get my BFP during a very stressful time, however the needing time off for ER will be tricky.  Its hard as you can't really call out sick or take a personal day UGH another joy of IF  :s

@Momifbysea a nice vacation sounds like a great, relaxing idea.  I hope you enjoy your trip!

@Hopeful_mom sound like you are pretty much on the same track as me as far as follicle count and size.  I hope all of yours keep growing nicely and at the same pace for a successful retrieval.

My next US is tomorrow morning, which can't get here fast enough, I need to make sure everything is still growing smoothly.  I was hoping for a few more follicles when I went in yesterday, but I guess I should just be happy with my 6 and hope the eggs are good quality.  I'm taking Omnitrope, which I've read can help with quality in poor responders, so here's to hoping.
  • I had my baseline on Wednesday and everyone looked good so I started stims that night. I go back on Monday to see how I'm responding
  • MMD1986MMD1986 member
Good luck with all your stims @Ladymillil!

My ultrasound went ok this morning. I have 3 dominant follicles and the other 3 are lagging behind, but still there.  The want me to continue my stims through the weekend and go back Monday for another scan.  Now I just need to hope the 3 dominant ones produce good eggs! It's kinda scary going into all of this without a high follicle count because it is so expensive and we are 100% OOP, so I want the best chances possible.
  • Hey guys, so I checked in here a while back... sorry to be crashing again.

So I actually had my egg retrieval yesterday. My cycle (IVF #1) was weird - I ended up over-responding to the meds, with an estradiol of ~4800 on the day of my trigger injection and they were concerned about OHSS.

I had my retrieval yesterday and had 8 eggs.  I know I should feel fortunate to have even those eight, but I was pretty bummed. I guess it's all about expectations. I got enthusiastic about the possibility that I might have more since I was responding pretty well to stims and saw more on the screen. The RE said it was the small ones that were producing the estrogen.

I've actually asked my husband to receive the fertilization / embryo reports on my behalf and not tell me what's going on - I can't handle the stress anymore! If there are any embryos, they can stay put for a month (or heck, a year) until I feel emotionally able to handle any news.

@MMD1986 - Baseline follicle counts are scary. I don't like them. But more follies can pop up anytime. I had ZERO follicles at baseline on my right ovary, and then it ended up producing just fine.

@Hopeful_mom - From 6 to 7, awesome! Go ovaries go!

If there's anything i learned from IVF #1, it's that it's very unpredictable. Anything can happen, good or bad, at each stage of the way. Ooof.
    Me - 35 (DH - 33).

    11/16: IUI #1=  BFN.
    1/17: IUI #2 = BFN.
    5/17: IVF #1. 'long lupron' protocol. E2 = 4800, 'freeze-all', 8R, 7M, 4F, 4B.
    8/17: FET #1.
    Thus far - 'unexplained'.
  • So far I have 14 embabies growing  (day 3 report). Unfortunately I won't be able to do a fresh transfer, because I have ohss. It actually hasn't been as bad as I expected, just a couple of extra appointments and no transfer. Also drinking v8 is super gross. But I guess I'll be leaving this board and hanging out until I figure out when we can do a frozen transfer!

I'm so glad that everyone is having a good cycle.  Everyone's numbers look great, I hope this thread gets a baby!
  • Wow @daisy222-2 wow that cyst aspiration sounds kinda scary but slightly neat at the same time.  I’m so happy you get to move forward!

@notamyrtle I actually didn’t get any folicle counts during my stims.  I’m sure I could have asked but I was so disappointed with my first IVF I had 13 follicles and only got 4 eggs it was pretty crushing at the time.  Save yourself the stress sometimes ignorance is truly bliss.

@allgoodmorning1 I’m glad your ohss isn’t too bad.  That stuff scares me.

I’m just hanging out and waiting to get my final blast count…and dealing with a bunch of insurance drama.

  • MMD1986 I'm in the exact same boat on counts and all OOP and even that adds extra stress to the process for sure!!  Assuming all goes to plan we should be at ER sometime this week eeekkkk!!!!

@allgoodmorning1 congrats on the 14 embabies growing that awesome!!  How many did you have at ER again?  Are you planning on testing?  Sorry for the ohss I prefer to do a fresh transfer myself but now that I have to do testing hopefully I'll make it to an FET at some point.

notamyrtle IVF is such a hard process for sure and you should try and do whatever you can that you think will make it less stressful.  Unfortunately for me I like to know everything down to my OH stats ;)  I wish I had the time to write a book just on the expectation part of this.  The RE has so much info to tell you during your consultation I feel they just skip over that part altogether.  best of luck and a great upcoming report!!

LadyMillil good luck stemming hope u get a great report on monday!

AFM: Waiting for the nurses to call to let me know how i'm doing.  The tech on the weekends never measures my follies correct but one looked way bigger on the screen so i'm a lil concerned about that 14 on the left.  Maybe I"ll try to get a nap in with this lovely weather.  I so wanted to skip monitoring today!

    Hi Ladies!!

In hoping to be a part of this June FET for real!!!  Its first trigger time for me and ER on Tuesday.  I'm a bit nervous as I have 8 follies showing but only have the 5 that are measuring from 16 - 20.5  My 3 bigger ones are on the left.  I have another 3 on the left but they are smaller 10 and 11.  And they're not giving me any more meds for them so that I don't loose my bigger ones.  Just makes it concerning as my odds become less.  Lets hope all 5 are super strong!!  Just keep thinking positive thoughts for me ladies it worked last time

2MomsHoping what a great mothers day present right!  congrats!!  Now the PGS wait - thats a tough one!!  Looking forward to hearing more good news!

  • @Hopeful_mom Yay!! GL on Tuesday! So no more meds until then of any sort?

MMD1986 hope your ultrasound tomorrow looks good. What day of stims are you now?

notamyrtle I hear you about expectations. It can be really rough. I feel like when my Dr walks through a procedure, its always best case scenario. Which is often not real life!

@aligoodmorning1 That is fantastic there are so many! Curious about the v8, is this recommended? Hope you can do a frozen transfer soon.

2MomsHoping Congrats! Such great rates! So amazing to have hope :)<3

I had my first US/labs today after starting stims (I'm on day 4). Things looked good! 15 follies, all between 7 and 10 mm. So happy, and I hope they continue to grow together. So far this is WAY better than my last (cancelled) cycle. I guess the addition of lupron is doing the trick, so far. They are increasing Menopur from 1 to 2 vials, that's the only change. I go back in 2 days for another check.

  • daisy222-2 thats a great update good for you, glad lupron is doing the trick!!  I was on 4 vials on menupar from day one so have fun with two ;)  Whens your next us?  Hoping they all keep growing together for you, you're off to a great start!! AFM I was a bit down to hear my US show that my follicles are not growing the saem as they did the last time, but the testing was only after one follistim injection, and the last time it was after 2.  I am doing mini IVF so there are only 4 Foll injections all together, so I am hoping this is what made the difference, an that tomorrow my US will show some growth.  This is making me a bit religious!

  • @hopeful_mom good luck for your egg retrieval on Tuesday.  I pray your 5 will give you strong eggs.  I know it can be hard to go into a retrieval with lower numbers but just keep thinking positive thoughts.  I’ll be sending good vibes your way.

@daisy222-2 great update!  Those follicles sound awesome especially only being on day 4!  Its amazing how little tweaks to a protocol can make such a difference!

@littledarlins sometimes different cycles can play tricks on you but its so hard to tell an outcome after just one injection.  I hope your US tomorrow shows that things are picking up.  also lol to the bit religious comment.  I’m not too religious but I do find that this whole experience has definitely brought out the spiritual side of me.  Cant hurt right ;)

@littledarlins good luck on your ultrasound today.

@Hopeful_mom My next ultrasound is this morning. Hoping my few follicles still look good.

@daisy222-2 the Menopur does burn some, but it's not that bad. It goes away for me as soon as the shot is done.
  • @MMD1986 I hope you had a good ultrasound this morning! Last time I only had 8 follicles so I understand the pressure or anxiety over a small number!

@littledarlins good luck and let us know how it goes!

@Hopeful_mom I hope they catch up but hey, the strong ones may be all you need- I know it sounds cliche but I try to take comfort in that it only takes one strong healthy one! Thinking of you.

@2MomsHoping wow that is fabulous news! This wait must be hard, but coming from someone who never got to blastocyst stage, having 9 frozen sounds like heaven and good odds!!!
  • MMD1986MMD1986 member
Thanks @Momifbysea!  It went well this morning.  One of  the smaller follicles is still hanging in there, so I have a 12, 14, 15 and 16 and the nurse said things are looking much better.  I got to sign all the pre-op paperwork for the retrieval and transfer so I'm getting excited.  I've never made it this far before.  :)

Do y'alls clinics do bed rest after your fresh/frozen transfer?  My paperwork says 72 hours of strict bed rest following the transfer, which I wasn't expecting. Guess it's time to find some new Netflix series.
  • My U/S was not so good today, only one follicle showing real growth, but the docs office called and said we are going ahead, I was so relieved. I thought they were going to cancel. I guess at this age, if you have one follicle growing, you go for it!  I still have a few days for things to perk up.  I asked if it was because I had done anything, maybe was too active, had a beer, etc, but they said it is nothing I can do anything about- so just putting the good juju out there!

@MMD1986 let us know how yours went!

@2MomsHoping when do you hear anything?  Is yours a day 3 look or day five full testing thing?

MMD1986 my clinic says to take it very easy for a day, and then back to normal. (Although then they also said to not do strenuous work or exercise until the pregnancy test, so "normal" is not really totally normal)

littledarlins hope your US today shows growth! But glad they are going ahead.

My update today is that my follicles are looking good, still have 15 measurable (so, larger than 7ish) with the five largest around 11 mm. But the new problem is my lining is very thick! This is only a problem because we were planning on a fresh transfer. It is perfect thickness right now, about 12 mm, but I still have ~5 more days of stims so it will surely grow. If it gets above 14 mm, they won't do a transfer this cycle b/c I guess an embryo won't implant. Its not the end of the world, won't affect the retrieval, but for a variety of reasons (scheduling, general impatience) I was really excited about my late May transfer :(  Anyone else have any fun lining stories to share? They say sometimes it stops growing, but not usually. I didn't even know too thick was a thing!

@daisy222-2 I didn't know too think of lining was a thing either!  I've read from lots of people on here that their doctor's prefer to do a FET because it allows your body to rest after the stims and retreival, so having too thick of lining and having to wait may not be a bad thing.  Although, I hear you on being impatient, its so hard to be patient with all of this sometimes!
  • @MMD its funny my old clinic used to say to rest the day of and the day after with modified bed rest.  My current doctor says to avoid heavy exercise but normal activity is ok to resume immediately.

@daisy222-2 I had no idea thick lining was a thing either.  I think mine ever got that thick though so maybe they just never mentioned for me.  There is a certain school of thought that thinks FET are actually better because its give your hormones a chance to come down a little bit.  I can totally relate to the impatience part.

@littledarlings they did the 5 day check and all my 7 fertilized made it to blast so they were biopsied and frozen!!!  Now we wait for the PGS results which will take about two weeks.

2MomsHoping  That is fantastic, and I am sure the wait is tough (yet another thing we are waiting on!) but 7 is so great to start with!

I will go in tomorrow for the next U/S and then I will see if we are growing.  I went to an acupuncturist today, to see if that will help.  It cant hurt, can it?  Im all for trying anything.  I am feeling the tingling in my abdomen that I had the last time, almost a small ache, does anyone else get that?  I consider it a good sign now.

  • Hi ladies ER was ok but not as expected, I was hoping my body would surprise me with an extra like last time but instead my largest follie was empty and gave me nothing :(  First time thats happened so I couldn't not stop crying after retrieval. So I only got 4 eggs and 1 of the 4 didn't seem as mature...which makes my anger grow as I could've stemmed another day making it mature especially since the big one I triggered for was empty.

3 of them fertilized which I'm happy about but they still have along way to go to be biopsied.  I hate that I'm so down about it when I should be hopeful but the thought of doing another ivf cycle does not excite me in the slightest.   I will wait to see if these 3 make it and take it from there.  I really should've just done a fresh transfer with this batch since there are so few.  Every egg counts so i'm just frustrated that they sacrificed the smaller one for the bigger one and lost both in the end.

MMD1986 my clinic says bed rest at least for the day of transfer and to take it easy after.  It lakes so long to get to transfer I try and rest and take it easy as much as possible.  Many can do everything when getting a BFP with exercise and lifting things etc BUT why even chance it is how I feel, if you can rest, I say rest.

2MomsHoping  what a great update hoping they can all come back normal for u!

daisy222-2 glad things are growing nicely for you hope it continues.  I can't add any info on the lining as its something I haven't experienced it before.  Let that be the one thing I dont have to worry about.

littledarlins they do say acupuncture is suppose to help.  I did it for this cycle and so far not sure if I"m gonna be happy with the outcome...its so hard to know what really does help.  After doing so many rounds at this point I really still think its just your body doing what it wants...  Towards the end of stemming I always get different pains in my abdomen from the pressure.  Hope you've got some strong eggs in there.

@hopeful_mom I'm sorry your egg retrieval didn't go as you wanted, but 3 is still a good number, IMO!  Hopefully those eggs stay strong and continue to do what they need to.  I'm with you on so much of this just being your body doing what it wants.  It would be so amazing if there was a strict do this, do that and you'll get pregnant.  Ugh.

I'm going to make the best out of the bed rest when I get to that point.  72 hours seems like a bit much, but I'll regret it if I don't do and wind up with a BFN.  Plus I'm never going to complain about a few days out of the office. :)

@littledarlins How did your ultrasound go today?

I went in for my ultrasound this morning, and I have 3 follicles ready to go, one at 14, and then a few little ones that popped up.  Just waiting to hear from my nurse on whether to stim one more day or do my trigger shot tonight.
  • @Hopeful_mom i am sorry you got fewer eggs than expected, but you have 3 and that is great and I hope they do their thing and divide up beautifully.

thanks @MMD1986   My U/S was better yesterday. I really only have one follicle they are watching, and it is growing well, and the others are still too small.  But it is growing well and they want to keep going, and so do I. I go in today for another test.  They have poked my arm so many times the vein isnt working any more.  I will NOT miss the needles when this is over!

  • 2MomsHoping yay, that is amazing that all 7 made it, hope the wait goes fast for you.

@Hopeful_mom That is frustrating about the largest one :( they warned me that one of my largest is probably empty (b/c it was the cyst that they were only half able to get rid of). Annoying to keep seeing it all big and nice looking on the US :(

MMD1986 did you trigger yet? Hope things are going well!

Speaking of acupuncture (mentioned above), I'm having mixed feelings right now. I've gone pretty regularly over the last months. It may work, but I don't think it works as well as acupuncturists are convinced it does (that is obvious maybe). I have bad uterine blood flow, so my clinic recommended electro-acupuncture ("E-stim")  2x/week for a month before and during IVF. It ended up being cancelled due to weird follicle response. So that's not great. But that cycle did result in the only BFP of my life (CP tho), so maybe something was good that cycle? Then I did
acupuncture to prepare for this cycle, which was delayed b/c AF was late. So the acupuncturist did special "make your period come" acupuncture, and it DID come a few (3) days later, but AF had to come at some point anyways. Then we had to delay stims due to a cyst. So the acupuncturist did special "cyst be-gone" acupuncture, which did most certainly NOT work (it took a giant needle to do that). Now although things are going fine follicle-wise, my lining is possibly too thick as I mentioned above, and the acupuncturist thinks that its BECAUSE of the acupuncture and all the uterus-specific treatment we've been doing so she said she is going to stop putting needles in my belly. Blerg!!!!

Anyways, sorry for the long pointless story. I am currently feeling like
acupuncture is expensive quackery, that may have unintended consequences but no magical powers. But I am going in again tomorrow, because my clinic really recommends it. At $95 a pop. Sigh.....

I think I am on track for a Monday retrieval! Probably there will be ~8 mature follicles, with some stragglers. Whats the smallest size follicle that can produce a mature egg, anyone know? Here are my #s this AM:
    L: 15.5, 15, 14, 12, 10.5, 8, 8
    R: 16, 14, 13.5, 9.5, 9, 5

  • daisy222-2 glad things are moving along for you!  My OH agrees acupunture is quackery and a waste of money.  I just dont know.  I did get my BFP doing it and lost it too.  My cycle with abnormal embryos was no acupuncture, I only got 2 sessions in with my 2 normies, and then theres this cycle which has produced the worst amount like the first cycle BUT I have to still hope I have normie here and I made it to acupuncture I think 4 visits I believe but you cant quote me ;)  Of course they believe in it along with eating a healthy diet and everything else under the sun!!  Hopefully I can say it worked right!!  Its super expensive the first place I went was $110 a visit and they hurt me so after 10 sessions I left them and found a new place.  Try to look for community acupunture, one place i tried was $50 so that was a lil better BUT my DR that does it is also $80/90 it sucks when you can't catch a break on anything!!  BUT if it can help you want to try everything too.  As for the size of the follie its hard as each place measures differently, for me I think my place is anything above 16/18 they think is mature...however the 4th egg of mine they say was on the immature side and it measured mature so who knows!!

MMD1986  is your largest one 14?  At my place they usually dont like to trigger till 18 I think.

AFM: My Day 2 update - 4A, 4B and 2BC...so far 2 of the 3 are pretty much on target, I always strive for the A in school so I would like my eggs to do the same   I'm hoping the 3rd will catch up tomorrow and be a fighter!  My tummy is still hurting me which is annoying...but that too shall pass.

I've never done acupuncture and I think my clinic is pretty indifferent about it.  I wanted to try it but like you both said it is expensive, and the only clinics I could find around me were open during normal business hours and I've already missed so much work just for my regular fertility appointments.

@hopeful_mom my largest follicle was a 20, I think.  I had 3 large ones ready to go they said, and a smaller one at 14 as of yesterday morning, so maybe that 14 can catch up.  Fingers crossed.  I'd really like to have 4 follicles that each produce a mature egg.  I think I'd be satisfied with 4, but I'm guessing I'll get 3 because I'm trying not to get my hopes up.

I was reading online the average number of eggs RE's want to see if like 11, so hoping if I just get a few I can still get a BFP.  We aren't doing the genetic testing because it'd $5,000 extra.  :/  But if I only have a few, I say just throw them all in and pray one sticks.

@daisy222-2 I did my trigger at 9pm last night.  I go in for retrieval tomorrow at 7:30am!!
  • MMD1986 totally get it about not get my hopes up - I thought expecting 5 was just that.  I know I need to move on and I'm lucky if I get anything to even test!  I really liked the day 3 transfer!!  Wishing I can just get a normie outta this batch!  ER is early , so exciting, best of luck to u!

  • @daisy222-2 My RE thinks acupuncture doesn’t make a difference but she said if I want to do it and it makes me feel better to go for it as it doesn’t do any harm.  Seems like there a tons of studies out there that says it’s the magic perfect everything and just as many studies that says it does nothing.  My person opinion is that if you don’t like it quit.  No sense on adding more stress on to your plate.

  • @Hopeful_mom  Grow embryos grow! I haven't asked my clinic if they are going to give me daily updates or just tell me after 5 days, but the daily updates seem really nice (unless you are the kind of person who is just trying to forget about it all). I would like it. Although I have no idea how the grading system works yet. Regarding the pain, did they give you anything to take, or just Tylenol?

    MMD1986 GL tomorrow!

I just talked to my RE on the phone! Not a normal occurrence, but with every IVF cycle you get a "free" appt. w/ the Dr towards the end of stims to talk about retrieval and ask any Qs, and ours was over the phone. He thinks we'll get ~12 mature eggs which he thought would trickle down to ~5 day 5 blasts. This seems like a lower  % than other people have experienced, I wonder how he comes up with these #s. But 5 would still be really nice, I know. I also asked about the genetic testing (CCS) of any embryos that we would freeze... we had already decided to not do it b/c of cost, but I can't stop thinking about getting ready for a future FET in 2 months or 2 years not knowing if we are putting in a normal one or not, and having the most anxious pregnancy. He that for my age (almost 35) 65% of them are "normal", so is it worth $7k (our clinic's lab is so much $$!!) to figure out which 3 of the 5 are good? Such a decision :/ And so hypothetical at this point.

My retrieval is done. Super easy process. My RE said we got all 3 of my eggs and they looked good! We were planning on a fresh transfer, but after I woke up the doctor decided he wants to freeze them all and do a FET in a month or two. He said 40 out of the last 50 FETs he has done have resulted in BFPs. I'll take those odds.
  • Yay @MMD1986 !  Those are great success rates for FET, so that sounds like a good plan.

  • quick Q, have any of you had ovulation-like CM while on stims?  (like the egg-white kind)?

I have been having that last night and today and am worried... it would be just like my body to ovulate too soon and screw up this cycle just when I am at the finish line. My nurse thought that high estrogen can cause it, and its very unlikely that I would ovulate through the lupron. But she said that if I wanted to come in for an US today, I could. I'm not going to b/c I carpooled in and don't have the car, and also I have an US tomorrow AM, but wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this?

  • @daisy222-2 hmmmm had some CM towards my last couple of days which I thought was odd too but luckily everything was fine.  I know make way less so its hard to tell at times thats what it is.  And your lab is really expensive for testing, do they charge that much for the biopsy, can you shop around?  My place I probably spend about 3k so far but thats just the lab part...I get charged through the clinic also but not sure how much.  its a very hard decision however when you are younger the odds are in your favor and honestly I MC with a normal embryo so you really never know.

@MMD1986 congrats glad things went so well for you!  I like your RE's odds too thats great!!  How many are u going to transfer?

artemis618 I've been thinking about u!  Glad things are going well hoping everything continues correctly!!  I laugh when you said about TTC naturally, its such a joke already.  Its a over a year for me that I'm on meds and it sucks!!  Really turning 40 has kicked my ass and have gained 25-30lbs in this year!!  AND that the most weight I've gained in at least 5 years.  I'm a yo yo and its always been a struggle but this is just insane already!!

2MomsHoping funny my RE said the same thing about acupuncture that if its going to stress u out then dont do it.

AFM: My embabies I'm actually confused by my update.  Today she told me 8A, 8A, 8BC and one 4C.  Now that would mean 3 are growing well which is great!!  I just thought the other day that one was out.  I seriously thought she got confused with who I am...so at this point I will have to sit tight till Monday to hear what has been biopsied...really praying I got some fighters here!!
