Re: Big Dumb Questions Thread

  • @lanie1000 FTM but I'm not getting any newborn. I'll have 4 gowns that are one size, but otherwise it's all 0-3 months. I just don't see why slightly large clothes for a week or two would even be a problem, and I just can't justify something that he may not fit into at all, and if he does he'll probably only wear for a couple days, maybe a week or two.

Also, my husband is large, we were both born at almost 8 pounds, and this baby is already bigger even though he started out small. And we were both CHUNKY babies, so I just don't see me having a small baby. If he's premature I'll probably buy some smaller clothes, but otherwise I just don't see the point. STM+ correct me if I'm missing something major here.

Also re: amount of clothes. 100% depends on how much laundry you're going to do. I have to do laundry every 2 days or so for my cloth diapers, so I'll be doing a ton of laundry anyways. I'm only getting three sleepers and 10 onesies for 0-3 months. If he is spitting up and dirtying more than I can keep up with, I'll go get more clothes, but that would be one seriously messy baby. I'm also registered (although I probably won't buy myself until he's big enough, gotta love Amazon 2 day shipping) for 3-6 months and 6-9 months with 3 sleepers and 10 onesies each. And some 2 pairs of pants and 2 hoodies for those sizes as well. The other gear (like the giant winter puffy nonsense) I won't buy until I need it because I have no idea how big he will be when it gets cold here. I know it's easier now for me to get stuff, but I would much rather have to run out or online shop for something if I don't have enough than to have stuff we never use. That's my personality though.

  • I got a small bag full of NB/0-3 stuff yesterday and some of it is way smaller than the others - so I'm guessing brands really do matter. I was shocked at how small some of them were compared to the rest.

  • @AdaByron @notachanski @cssme13 thanks ladies! This is great info. I'm anticipating a bigger baby since I have GD and was a bigger baby myself. I'll follow suit with what @kerils is doing. As others have mentioned, I can always buy/order more in the right sizes when she's here. Thanks again for your input, everyone!
  • I definitely think 10 onesies are plenty, but I was really glad to have like 10 sleepers too, especially in the 0-3 month size. He wore them all the time at first-- they're easier than getting dressed in a "real" outfit and absolutely no one cares if a newborn is wearing a sleeper all day. 10 may have been excessive (they were hand me downs) but I would definitely have wanted at least 5-6.
  • I was 11lbs when I was born- your weight really has nothing to do with your baby's weight. My son was 8lb9oz and he fit in NB for over a month. Plus we got a pack of extenders for the his onesies so if there was a cute one I wanted to put him in after he grew out of it (to an extent) I would use those!
  • @nktrodden826 I stopped at 12 months and weaned gradually over 2 weeks.  I was a little uncomfortable for about three days after our last nursing session so I very gently hand expressed in the shower one time and I was fine after that.  Way to go keeping it up that long.

  • @lanie1000 it honestly just depends on your baby. DD was 7 pounds when she was born and diagnosed failure to thrive at 3 weeks old. She had gained one ounce in two weeks, therefore she was in NB clothes for about 3 months and NB diapers for a little over 3 months bc there's a big difference between NB and size 1 diapers.

DS was 8.3 and I got one pack of 3 size NB onsies he wore those three one time and never again. This time I didn't buy any NB. My nephew however was a fat and short baby, 10 pounds and 15 ounces but only 18 inches long and 0-3 were too big! He didn't get into 0-3m until he was a week old. Brands run different too, Gerber runs a size too small along with Disney, Carters is pretty TTS, I have found very few baby gap and Old Navy run a tiny bit too big.

So true- I forgot about this! we had to exchange some bigger sized diapers for NB because everyone thought the same thing- they're not in NB that long. But DS was in NB diapers for probably 3 months too!

I am a big proponent of don't open it or take the tags off of it until you are sure.  I exchanged a lot of stuff for DS that was the wrong size, and I only had trouble with one outfit.  I found that if you go into a store to exchange, they will scan it to see if it came from them, and often allow an even exchange, if you have no receipt.  I would avoid store credit, though, because you often get screwed on that deal.\

    ETA:  This includes diapers.
  • As far as newborn clothes go, DS was 7pounds, 14ounces, 20 inches long and was in newborn for 3 weeks. DD was 7 pounds, 10 ounces and 19 inches and was in newborn for over a month. Each baby is different, and like previous posters have said, sizes vary. I would for sure have more than just 3 gowns (my kids could go through that within a few hours depending on spit up/diaper blowouts) and in the summer I wouldn't want my kid in too big/hot clothes.

I'd err on the side of caution. Buy outfits/onesies and leave tags on.

On the topic of quantities- any suggestions on number/size of bottles to buy and register for? For context, I am hoping to breastfeed and pump. The baby will start daycare around 12 weeks when I return to work. I currently have 3 5oz bottles and 3 8oz bottles on my registry, but I know I need more. Also, should I hold off on buying a ton of bottles until the baby arrives in case it prefers one brand over the other?

We never got to more than 4.5oz with DD and breastmilk. So I never used a bottle over 5oz. She ate every few hours and was healthy, but your milk does weird things, they don't eat a ton more in volume, the makeup of your milk changes in nutrient and fat content. Also, some babies are very picky about the bottles they wI'll take, so you really want to not stock up too much because LO may not like them at all. If you're going back to work and have to pump, register for storage bags instead. And accessories for that (extra Medela ice pack and milk carrier may come in handy)

I have a big dumb question... if I have a bigger baby is there a decent chance that I'll skip newborn clothes all together? I know everyone says to only buy a few things, but I'm wondering if there are some babies that can fit into 0-3 months at birth... any STMs+ skip the newborn clothing phase?
We were only in the NB phase for about 2-3 weeks. Dd was 9lb1oz at birth and lost about 6oz the first week. The 0-3 fit well for a couple of months.
  • +1 on Gerber running way small. The nice thing about summer babies is a onesie and socks or a sleep gown is all you need unless you run your house cold but even then a swaddler or gown over the onesie works great and mine lived in them, we had a couple "outfits" for when we went or br I didn't go crazy there. DS was out of NB clothes before he was born and couldn't fit into Gerber 0-3 months but other 0-3 months brands fit him for a couple months. Remember you will probably ruin a onesie or 2, and they can work in a pinch as a burp/spit up cloth. Plus I like to save a few outfits at each stage for my kids to have when they get older.

I definitely wasted some clothes because they jump a stage quickly sometimes and crawl through another one. But I was able to give those to friends or hold on for the next baby.
  • We never used NB diapers or clothes for DS. He was 8.5 lbs, 21.7 inches.

He definitely grew out of things faster than I could pull them off the shelf. I waited too long to pull the next size out every. time.
  • To echo a lot of the PPs on here... I had only two or three NB outfits because my OB kept saying "this is going to be a big baby", but then she came early (3.5 weeks) and she was 7lbs2oz and then lost some weight initially so she ended up being in NB for about 6 weeks. After 3-4 weeks she could also wear 0-3 with that being a little big on her, but she wasn't swimming in it. I agreed with @MrsLa3 with the brands and sizing. To add, koala brand from BRU runs on the small side and Baby Gap runs a little wider. Burts Bees runs pretty TTS, as well.
  • @nktrodden826 I weaned my son in February - he still asks for it every day - he says milk, all gone, and kisses my chest.  I wasn't engorged or anything during the weaning phase but that may have been because my supply had already dipped so much.

For the fellow list makers, I feel like it helped me nest and control the 'nervous energy' associated with the unknown of being a FTM.  Like others have suggested I just washed a few items and kept the tags on the others.  Burts bees worked out well for our big and long baby (9 pounds 13 ounces and 22 inches.). Being born in the summer we kept him in onesies and threw A&A blankets over him as needed.  Little me and Absorba (though cute) ran small for us.

Our baby never took a bottle. Ever.  We tried all the bottles.  Turned out he had dysphagia and late oral coordination issues.  He would drink from a spoon on the rare occasion that I was not there.  (Exclusively breastfed for 13 months before he would try other food so never got any use out of the bottles.  Hope to use them with this baby!)
  •  @virginiaunicorn11 @caribbeanmama-2 @MrsLa3 thanks for your experiences!  It's been a week and he's asked for it a handful of times. We went kinda cold turkey from 2-3 times a day to nothing so I was worried but I guess it won't be like the newborn days when I'd skip a pumping session and my cup size would instantly triple. I haven't had any pain or engorgment so I wonder if that's coming. I feel so heart broken about stopping but I want enough time between him nursing and her coming so he doesn't resent her for "taking them from him". Thanks for all the support!

^This. The only things I have actually washed and put away are things bought second hand (which obviously can't be returned). Everything else is hanging up with tags still on, in case I need to return/exchange. I will probably wash a load of NB & 0-3 onesies/sleepers and some swaddles before she comes, but everything else is waiting until I know for sure we will use it.

  • I forgot to mention about baby clothes, my sister gave me all the hand me downs from her son born in June and mine born in September. Louisiana is hot until December soooo we didn't have a problem with seasons. Just because one baby is born in January and another is born in October, it's still going to get cold and there's probably things you could use. Take all the hand me downs.
  • I've been good with keeping tags on, and not so good with saving receipts. Oops. Thank you all for the helpful suggestions!!!

For baby clothes - DS was 8lbs 2oz and was in NB for at least a month.  0-3 was way huge on him and there is no way he could have worn them....like neck hole was almost as wide as his shoulders and so loose that it would bunch up and pi$$ him off.
As for washing everything, I washed 2 NB outfits and 2 0-3 outfits to take to the hospital and left tags on everything else until We got home and I knew his size.

For bottles, a couple smaller ones are probably fine until you know what baby will take.  We never had any issues with taking different bottles of switching breast to bottle but I don't believe in nipple confusion and offered a bottle early to try and prevent issues.  Might have been a total fluke but I will do the same this time around.  I wouldn't stock up on a ton of bottles just in case you have a picky baby.

@kerils if 0-3 is just kind of loose then go for it but if they are really too big then it can be a safety issue.  This is especially true for sleepers but if baby is even napping in clothes and the onsie is too loose and can bunch up around their face it can be dangerous.

Agree.  Both of my boys completely skipped the 9 months clothing range.  They were in 6mo clothes and suddenly nothing at all fit them.  They were in 18-24 month clothes by 1 year. If I'd assumed the clothes would age appropriately with them and bought for seasons I'd have been way off.  Take any/all hand-me-downs.

  • I also agree with hand me downs! My daughter has had hand me downs since 9 months and suddenly outgrew all of them and it is the pits to have to go buy her clothes now since we didn't have to for so long (she's almost two).

  • Hi I have a really dumb question, don't flame me and it's not even for me. A group of us were talking and someone said if she were ever pregnant she would find it hard to give up weed gummies. She needs it to relax at the end of the day. And I was like, well, if you're not smoking it, is it actually a no no?
I myself don't touch any of that stuff, but I was just curious.

  • @plumpous - my guess would be that you're still ingesting it, so no weed at all. Same as I wouldn't eat vodka gummies - it's still going into my body and can cross the placenta.
  • lanie1000 I had a tiny baby at 6lb and she was in NB for only a month, so it's highly likely you won't use NB If you think you'll have an avg sized baby. Go straight to 0-3. A suit that's a little too big is not a bad thing.

See my previous comment about stuffed animals, dryers and darwinism, lol. Definitely dry them, and if they don't make ot, it wasn't meant to be.

I'm only washing the secondhand clothes that can't be returned, so making it thru 1 kid at least means they probably have a Darwinian advantage!

  • @GlitterFish a lot of people don't dry baby clothes if they plan to resell, since the dryer can cause more wear. But in general, they are fine to dry. I would do it on a gentler setting than normal though.

Oh man, I really thought they came out looking a lot worse! I wasn't sure if it was the dryer or the deep clean soak I put them through yesterday.

I also can't picture trying to line dry all of them, though!

@GlitterFish did you use normal settings or delicate? I have been doing everything baby related on delicate (both wash and dry) and haven't noticed any issues yet. And I totally feel you on line drying. My sister line dries all her baby/kids clothes and I don't understand how lol

I have literally the most basic W/D that Home Depot would deliver, so I only have 4 dryer settings: High Heat, Low Heat, Timed (High Heat), and No Heat. I used Low Heat. In the washer, I think I did the regular cycle on cold, because the primary objective was getting a stain out of a hand me down crib comforter. Thankfully that seems to have come out!

Although I didn't get as nasty water as I expected, I will try to add the photos of my bathtub deep clean for anyone else using hand me downs - SOAK THEM! Such a pain, but yuck!
