Re: GTKY: What do you do?
What do you do?
I am a Registered Nurse and I work in the Emergency Department, as well as my side gig as a Personal Trainer who specializes in Prenatal and Postpartum fitness (feel free to spam me with your pregnancy fitness questions! It's definitely my passion)
How Long have you been in that career/profession/position etc?
I have been an RN for 6 years, in my current job for 4 years. I've been personal training for just over a year!
What are your career goals?
I'd like to get into labour and delivery or public health one day, though I've always talked about going to med school! Who knows if that will ever happen though.
What did you do before this career/profession/position?
I was a waitress/bartender for 10 years (age 14-24) and absolutely loved it at the time, it was the PERFECT job to work while going to University and allowed me to graduate and pay off my student debt within a year!

What a great GTKY!
What do you do?
I teach 9th and 10th grade. I'm in my 5th year of teaching and I just adore my kids, love my school, and love my subject. The downside is allllllll of the many, many hours of grading a planning required. I'm anxious about how that will all work with baby.
How Long have you been in that career/profession/position etc?
I've been a teacher for 5 years and at my current school for 4.
What are your career goals?
I want to go back to school for my master's degree but I'm so undecided about which path to take. I go back and forth between special education and administrative leadership. They're both so different and I'm having a hard time committing.
What did you do before this career/profession/position?
I subbed for a year before moving to SE Florida for a full-time position. I also worked in the homes of kiddos with autism throughout college as a therapeutic staff support aide for 4 years while working as a server during that time as well.

How Long have you been in that career/profession/position etc? I've been with my current company for about 5.5 years, but been doing some sort of data analysis since I graduated college.
What are your career goals? Honestly, not too much. My job is so flexible with hours and working from home so I definitely wouldn't want to leave until all of my kids were older. I don't really want to move up much more either because that would require a lot more travel. I like what I do too so I'm happy where I'm at.
What did you do before this career/profession/position? I worked retail for a few years in college as well as some other random jobs.
How Long have you been in that career/profession/position etc? Almost two years
What are your career goals? Probably moving into more healthcare management or changing fields and doing something with kinder hours
What did you do before this career/profession/position? I was a registered dietitian for 5 years prior to going back to graduate school.
I started out as a CNA and then realized I hated healthcare, so I dropped out of nursing school, but still spent the next ~8ish years as a CNA and then became a HUC on a cardiac step down unit with telemetry and the ICU. It wasn't until I met my husband that I realized I wasn't getting any younger and couldn't stay on a field I hated. I quit and started helping a friend open a raw juice bar. I took on the role of operations manager there and stayed until we decided to move closer to the school I planned on attending for mortuary science and funeral directing, which had been a dream of mine for a very long time. I ended up getting a job at a bookstore and getting pregnant instead, so I scrapped the mortician plan. I left my job at a bookstore the day before Thanksgiving (DD was born 1/13/16). I'm sure Black Friday would've put me into labor! I initially wanted to work as long as possible, but I was having really bad BH for weeks before I left.
I have no idea what I'll do when the kids are older. I really won't have any marketable skills at that point, but I don't think my husband should be the only income. I thought about going to school then to become a mortician, but I think it'll be too late. The time commitment will just be too much. I still want to be present, even if I'm not home full time anymore. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, though!
What do you do? I'm a full time student -- taking 18 credits this semester! When I'm not studying and doing homework I get to be home with my DS.
How Long have you been in that career/profession/position etc? I'm wrapping up my fourth year and hoping to graduate in December which will be tricky to take of finals with a newborn.
What are your career goals? I will hopefully have my BS in health education and promotion in December and then will go on to nursing school the following fall. Eventually I plan to do health education in a clinical setting.
What did you do before this career/profession/position? I was a dental assistant for 5 years before DS was born last May.
What do you do? I'm a sahm
How Long have you been in that career/profession/position etc? Since my oldest was born in august 2012, so nearly five years.
What are your career goals? I have a bachelors in English and I want to go back and get my teaching credentials eventually. When I got my BA, they were laying off teachers so I postponed my credentials. Now they desperately need teachers and I have 3 semesters of classes to take
What did you do before this career/profession/position? I worked at an insurance company and was working my way up in underwriting.
What do you do? Right now I'm working from home for Under Armour. I design and sell cheerleading uniforms for them and really like it!
How Long have you been in that career/profession/position etc? This is my third year doing it.
What are your career goals? I love to quilt and craft, so I'm hoping to move into doing that full-time from home with this baby as well.
What did you do before this career/profession/position? I worked in Parks and Rec and before that owned a cheerleading gym... My masters is in Sport Administration, so mostly everything I've ever done has been in that general area.
I really enjoy teaching but would like to specialize more in SpecEd or Mental Health. Most of these jobs are administrative in my board though, and I don't really want to leave the classroom.
Before teaching, I did IBI therapy, worked in group homes for youth with a dual diagnosis and waitresses.
This is my first year teaching.
My goal is to move to a different grade level. Probably 2nd or 3rd. My kids are so cute but I would prefer to teach kids that are able to understand humor. In kindergarten they are SO literal. Also I have just started my masters (for the pay bump mostly, ha ha ha)
Before teaching I worked in childcare. I have always been a kid person.

What do you do? I work in Academic Affairs at a college. I'm the person who makes the catalog, and manages curriculum approvals from our local committees to the state level, and then back into our database.
How long have you been in that career/profession/position etc? I've been in this position for about 15 months, and it's been a really great fit. I've had many previous positions in different parts of higher ed, from student services, to orientation, to teaching a bit as a grad student, to what I'm doing now. I guess I'm a jill of all trades
What are your career goals? I think eventually I'd like to transition into institutional research--keeping track of stats for the college to measure its success (or not), and finding better/more equitable ways to measure performance.
What did you do before this career/profession/position? Immediately before this I was in grad school. I finished my masters in 2012 and then started a phd in information & computer science...about halfway through I realized it wasn't for me. I loved my colleagues and what I was learning--but I knew I didn't want to be a tenure-track professor, and that anything else I wanted to do didn't require a doctorate. So I left, got engaged/married, and moved from the city back to my old college town in the woods. No regrets.
What do you do? I work in the treasury department of a big bank.
How Long have you been in that career/profession/position etc? I've been with the bank for 4 years, but in this position for just under a year
What are your career goals? Not sure where I want to go next, but I love working for the bank, so it would be an internal move.
What did you do before this career/profession/position? I was a district training store manager for Blockbuster for 10 years before they went bankrupt, then went into furniture sales for a bit, but it wasn't my thing.

How Long have you been in that career/profession/position etc? about a year and a half
What are your career goals? I'm currently re-evaluating things. My job is a job and I happen to be very good at it, but it's stressful and doesn't fulfill me.
What did you do before this career/profession/position? I was in healthcare on the admin side in various capacities. I have a degree in Healthcare Management.

What are your career goals? I've reached my goals! It feels crazy and amazing to say that. I got my Master's degree in 2015.
What did you do before this career/profession/position? Wellllll.... LOL... I worked in TV production which was my dream job and what I went to college for. Then I quit and volunteer taught in india. When i came back I got a job at the non profit company thru which I had volunteered. After a few years there I quit to do more international travelling. Upon my return I worked at a media monitoring company. Then landed in ESL teaching, where I will stay. Although I wish I could be a stay at home mom but we can't afford it.

Baby #1 was born in May 2013.
