STM- What are you buying this time around?

Happy Friday! I know it is still super early, but I am going through every thing to make sure I  have all that 2nd baby will need. I know for sure we will need a double stroller. I think it will be a lot easier this time around, since we can use a lot from first baby. What is on your to buy list this time around?!

Re: STM- What are you buying this time around?

  • This is my kind of thread. I'm all about the planning lol

DS will be 5 by the time the baby comes, so we won't need a double stroller. We will need a new infant car seat though. We'll also probably buy a second harness booster for DS and give the baby the convertible seat for the second car. Seems to make more sense than buying a second base and later still having to buy the bigger seat.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to splurge on a  Dockatot. We no longer have a swing, and I don't know if we'll get another one or not.

I planned all this months ago, but I have been thinking about it again!

  • Loading the player...
  • We use the bumbo multi seat as DD's high chair/booster seat, so probably a second Bumbo.

A double stroller would be a good idea, although I wonder if I could get away with wearing one and strolling the other most of the time. I have a bike trailer I could use as a double stroller once Baby #2 can sit up pretty well.

Other than that, I can't think of any big items off the top of my head that I would need another of.

We'll definitely invest in a double stroller (DS will be about 20 months when #2 is born) and I am upgrading to a video monitor for sure. We are fairly minimalistic in our baby needs so I thought getting a video monitor was unnecessary but I regret that now. I'll probably try and find both on BSTs though. I also hate our diaper bag and don't use it ever (skip hop duo) so I'd like to sell that and upgrade - maybe splurge on a ju ju be bff or be prepared.

  • A new infant carseat
another camera for our video monitor
thats all I got so far...
  • A really good baby carrier, we pretty much have everything we need.

  • @Dumbgurl04 I highly recommend the beco Gemini! I love it! You can use it with a baby 7lbs or more so pretty much from the beginning
  • Hoping to baby wear and not have to get a double stroller but we'll see how that goes....only thing I can think of is another camera for the monitor!
  • Hopefully not a dang thing.  I know something will come up though.  Since our first two were 14 months apart and one is a boy and one is a girl, we have a bazillion clothes either way, infant seats, convertible seats, single strollers, double strollers, etc.  I'm really hoping I don't have to buy a single thing except a special going home outfit and that I can get my husband to spring for a birth photographer since we'll be saving so much money by not needing any more gear.   :p  Honestly, we will need to figure out sleeping arrangements to move DD out of the nursery at some point.  She's still in a crib(for life! ;) ) and we'll keep the baby in our room for several months.  So, probably another toddler bed but no rush.  Or, buy a twin bed for DS, move DD into the toddler bed, and then put #3 into the nursery.  Probably going to room DD and DS together for a little while to keep it easy but if that goes to heck, then whatever we have 2 of will eventually go into DS's current room as it is huge and the singleton will get the other bedroom so there may just be some bedroom decorating involved if we have to switch everybody up.

  • We will need a crib, dresser, and double stroller.  Anyone familiar with the Chicco Bravo for Two?  It will work with our chicco key fit and has the sit/stand option for Henry who will be a little over 2 when new baby is born.
  • DD will be 5 when this LO makes its appearance, so we have a ton from her that has been in storage. We will need a new crib and dresser, as her crib transitions to a full, and a new car seat.
BabyFruit Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • A lot, DS will be 6 so we don't really have much from him, plus my charming BIL (brother in Law ) broke the swing and the little vibrating chair thing we had for DS, we will need, new stroller/ car seat, baby bathtub, vibrating chair thingy, baby gym, high chair, and then just smaller stuff like crib sheets , mobile , baby monitor stuff like that
  • We are starting from scratch. But we have really simple needs.
Cot (grotime overture kit with changer)
    Change table
    Pram (baby jogger premier)
Car capsule that fits pram (nuna pipp)
Nappy bag (oioi buffalo in turquoise)
Ring sling (maya wrap in plume
Highchair (tripp trapp....not sure what color)
    Baby food steamer/blender (phillips Avent)
    Basic clothes for bub
    Swaddling wraps (weegoamigo bamboo)
Pram blanket - cotton knit of some kind
    Cot linen (white)

And that is it for the first 12 months. Possibly a few little things like a play mat and a few basic toys. We are minimalists and i choose quality over quantity everytime. I already have picked brands and type for most things. The only thing that will change is colours for linen and clothes depending on bubs gender.

The highchair I've chosen also doubles as an inside capsule style seat for a newborn so no need for a rocker/bouncer.

4th time around so I know what i need and what i dont.

Honestly i could make do for first 4-6 months with just a car capsule, ring sling and change table. And nappies. And boobies.
  • This is a good question! I think the only thing we'll need is another bed.  DD #1 is currently in a toddler bed and DD #2 in the crib.  I think we'll get or make toddler size bunk beds for the girls to use that should last a few years.

And maybe a different type of double stroller that will fit all 3 kids.  At only 3 1/2, I anticipate that she'll still need to sit when we go places.

    Hopefully that's all we'll need!

We went straight to the convertible car seat (ours goes down to 5 lbs) so we will need another one of those. We'll want a double stroller, and I've been leaning toward the kinderwagon (my sister has it), but it's a bit pricey. Also, I hated the swing/bouncer combo we had with our DS, so I sold it at a resale and will need a new one for this LO (I've been eyeing the one my sister has since DS was 4 mo). And we will move our 18 mo DS to a twin bed and out of the crib before the delivery. We also borrowed a cosleeper from friends last time and loved it. I think this time we might invest in one, that way we have it for any future babies.

  • @MrsBunz how did you like a convertible as an infant seat? Pros and cons? I've been thinking about it but I'm not sure sure now that we have a Nov. due date and it'll be cold all winter.

@slaven I loved it. The biggest pro was not needed to shell out for two $200-$300 seats. The only down side I found was that if he fell asleep in the car, I couldn't just take the bucket seat in and let him sleep in it. But he transfers from the car to his crib really well, so that's never really been a problem for me. One of the reason we chose to go straight to the convertible is that I'm really petite, and I struggled to carry my nephew around in his bucket seat. It was too heavy and large and so lopsided that it made me throw my hip out (I have joint issues due to teenage sport injuries and bad genes). The convertible also meant we had to carry him everywhere, but I just wore him, so it wasn't a problem. DS was a late Aug baby, and we live in OK, so I didn't have to worry too much about the cold weather until he was a bit older.

  • Everything, ugh. I'll have an 8 yo when the baby is born and thought I was done so I literally have nothing.  But I do think I'll buy less this time, with DS I thought I needed everything anyone recommended.  I'll be smarter and more frugal (I think).
  • I saved EVERYTHING from my son so if I have a boy the only thing I'm buying is a new blanket (my son is obsessed with his Aden dream blanket so new baby will get one too). If it's a girl I'm just going to need some clothes. I discovered you don't need nearly as much that they say you do!
  • @MrsBunz Thanks, I don't like the idea of leaving babies to sleep in their infant seats or spending $300 on a seat I'll use for 8 months. Plus the convertibles I want are expensive enough, just have to make sure it fits in my Ford Focus in infant mode with the proper recline.

@slaven We have the Chicco NextFit and we've found it fits in a bunch of different cars. So far our's has been in a Honda CR-V, a Kia Soul, a Toyota Prius, a Subaru Forester, a Kia Sorento, a Honda Element, and a Honda Fit. (We've flown a lot and borrowed cars, I promise we don't own all these).

  • Car seats are the best place to leave sleeping infants when you're out and about! Drape a blanket over them, and no one will touch them! If I had had to hold my sleeping infant in church, I know EVERYONE would have pinched her cheeks or touched her hair and would have woken her up and gotten her sick, especially since she was an infant during flu season (DD was a November baby, too). That's my opinion, anyway.

I remembered I'll also need to buy a second Bowron sheepskin. DD loves hers!
  • Seconding the infant seat. I STONGLY considered going straight to the convertible but I was happy with my decision to start with the infant seat. I had a March baby (in the Chicago area so it stays cold for a bit) and I thought it was super useful for the cold and protecting him from the elements so I can't imagine not having it for a baby born in November. FWIW I have the Chicco Keyfit30 and really like it. We just switched DS at 11 months. Not to mention the convenience of them sleeping - sleeping in the car, to sleeping in the grocery store to back sleeping in the car. Can't beat that!

  • @flowerpower5838 I loved my Chico keyfit 30!!
  • I love my keyfit 30 also.
  • I think we'll go with an infant seat, just because it'll be the beginning of winter.

  • @slaven you won't regret it!
  • A new house is at the top of the list :D

Besides that, I think we have most things we'll need. I can't wait to find out the gender so I can go through DS's clothes and either whittle them down a bit or sell most of them. We have a mamaroo that DS wasn't a big fan of, so if the new baby hates it we'll sell that and get something else, but obviously that'll happen much later. We need another camera for our monitor, and though my son is totally crib for life, I don't know if we will buy a second crib and just convert his to a toddler bed, or buy a whole separate toddler bed for him. He's nowhere near potty training yet so I don't really know what we'll do. Oh yeah, and I really want the new Tula that adjusts to grow with baby! I'm a huge Tula fan so that's a must have for me ;) Oh yeah, and our stroller (uppababy Vista) converts to a double so thankfully we are good on that front too. Lots to think about though!

  • I'll need the infant insert for my standard tula, or I may get one of the new free to grow ones.  <3

I'll also want to get a new dresser for this baby, and a new changing pad to put on the top.  Some cute sheets and muslin swaddle blankets.  There are so many cute things now compared to when my DD was a newborn.

I'll probably splurge and get some freshly picked baby moccasins for this one too.

Our stroller system is good, but I may contact the company to see if I can get a new canopy piece from them.  I'd like to keep the one we have but the canopy part is faded.  Doesn't affect function but it could look better!

Baby #2 was born in December 2017.

  • We saved everything! Sooo really just some girl clothes if this one is a girl? A new Tula because mine is REALLY well loved? I got almost everything gender neutral just because I knew we'd want a second child.
  • Hopefully as little as possible. My son just upgraded out of his infant seat so we can use that. The only thing we may need to buy is another Crib.
  • @katykate2016 I'm in the same boat. DS will be 8 as well and we thought he was it, so I have been getting rid of our baby stuff over the last few years. At least this time I know what I really need and can keep it to a minimum.

  • We did the same thing @BayCamp bought mostly gender neutral even though we knew we were having a girl.  So a lot of our big items we are good on.  It was funny a lot of family thought I was nuts but I just told them it's smart since we plan to have another we don't have to buy everything all over again.

Is Tula a baby carrier? I might have to look into that I need a really good one to be hands free with a toddler.

  • @Dumbgurl04 it's a wonderful baby carrier. Definitely pricey, but you can get used ones as well. I got mine for my first Mother's Day and it's earned its high price tag multiple times. I can still wear my 30lb 2yo comfortably on my back for long periods of time. Like for 3 hours in the vet waiting room the other day when he was mad he couldn't pet all the sick dogs lol

My son is 6, his father is my ex husband, and I never expected to remarry and/or have another baby. Sooooo, we have literally no baby stuff. I do feel like being a STM gives me better perspective than I had before - I bought a fair amount that we didn't use last time around.

Baby Care - a pack of pacifiers, a wubbanub or two, a sound machine (I like the Homedics Soundpsa), a bath seat (thinking of the angelcare?), and a new nosefrieda.

Linens - a few crib sheets, a swaddle sack, one new stroller blanket (I'm eyeing up an A&A blanket), and a Boppy slipcover. I have plenty of A&A swaddles left over from my son and they're more or less the only blanket I ever needed for him.

Clothes - I'm sure I'll be buying these as I go, and people will get them for us, but my must haves for right away are a few footed zip up sleepers, a few side snapping shirts, and some socks (Robeez socks stay on great).

Feeding - We'll get a high chair (the FP space saver), a pack of prefold diapers as burp cloths, some absorbent bibs (I liked the Tommee Tippee milk bibs for my son), a few bottles (I'll try Tommee Tippee again, but just a couple until I know that baby will take them),a boppy, and some breast milk storage bags/bottles since I will be pumping at work again.

Gear - We'll do an infant seat in my car and a convertible in FI's. I will hit up the huge local consignment sale for things like a Jumperoo, floor seating (I want the FP sit me up), a playmat/gym, a bouncy seat, and/or a swing - won't need all of these but will see what deals I can get. I'll be getting a crib and crib mattress, a Rock n Play, a pack n play (hoping a generous family member wants to splurge on the 4moms breeze, ain't nobody got time for fighting to fold up a PnP), a baby monitor, and a baby carrier (I have a kinderpack but may get something better for itty bitties, maybe a k'tan).  Oh, and a stroller, probably the same one I had for my son - the City Mini.

Diapering - I CD'd my son until he was almost 4, so planning to CD again. FI would like to try gdiapers, so I think the newborn starter set will do us nicely since it has NB and size Small diapers. I'll grab a few cases of wipes (which we still use regularly, in fact, my 6yo still wears diapers sometimes), a couple of wet bags, a wet pail, and a new diaper pail (for when we use disposable inserts, and when we use disposable diapers). I'll probably grab a couple of packs of disposables to use early on when I'm not feeling up to too much laundry.

So - that sounds like a lot, but I feel like it's pretty streamlined. We've been TTC long enough to have thought a lot about this!

I'm so excited that this time around, I have a better idea of what I need. We're getting a double stroller for sure, a wipe warmer, a forehead thermometer that actually works accurately, plenty of bottles and nipples (I didn't have any the first time around, thinking that I would breastfeed for at least a year. Only made it three months and had a mad dash to buy bottles). Also one of those things that goes in the dishwasher to hold pacis and nipples, a bottle drying rack. Lots of stuff I never had the first time that I'm excited about!
  • DD is only 14 months old right now, so we still have everything (not even packed away...) I hope we're going to have a girl, otherwise our boy will have to live with a purple infant seat!
Theres a really neat app that can track how much your baby is eating while breastfeeding. I didn't have much luck with my milk last time, so I'm hoping something like that will help me know how much baby is getting.
Also, a rather silly thing - I saw these awesome Aden & Anais burp clothes that are curved to fit over your shoulder. My husband wouldn't pick up the baby without something on his shoulder. I think he'll like them a lot.
