Dumb Questions: March

Re: Dumb Questions: March

  • Ours are mostly watery over here too!
  • @kvruns can they save a diaper for you to compare to what you are used to seeing? It seems odd to me a care provider would not know that breast fed baby poop can be watery. My day care won't take them if they have diarrhea because you are too contagious still. But only time DD had it was coming off the flu and obviously sick so no other experience here.

  • I thought about asking for a pic - I think I will if they raise it as a concern.
  • Maybe it's just the one caretaker has less experience?

  • So about solids...

When are you introducing solids to LO? And I mean as mere flavors and experience not as full meals. I've been coming through pictures of our first to determine when we did it last time and I'm finding she was getting almost an entire container of food somewhere in the 5 month range, which means we probably introduced flavors at 4 months. But now that feels fast. And yet this one shows a lot of interest in food, including following the fork and grabbing things off my plate with dead accuracy.

    Anyway, what's your plan?

  • My plan is to wait until 6 months to introduce solids and I'm skipping any rice/oatmeal cereal entirely. Will probably start with mashed avocado and yams etc.

  • Is rice/oatmeal cereal supposed to be phase 1 or something? Should they not be eating oatmeal if they're eating mashed other stuff? I eat oatmeal every day  :#

My plan is to wait til 6 months. I admittedly don't know much about starting solids other than "food before 1, just for fun" and that I like the sound of baby-led weaning. Figured my WTE book will help me when we get there!

  • @hoosiermama the baby specific rice and oatmeal cereals are like mush. They have no taste and no real texture. It's just an industry approved first food and I guess babies get practice swallowing if you give it to them. I personally feel it's an unnecessary step and if I'm going to give my baby food I'd rather it be fruits and veggies that expose him to taste and texture as well as better nutritional value. There's no reason you couldn't give the cereal as well as regular food but why would you? At this age they will be tasting things and not really eating them as a meal so might as well get more bang for your buck and let them taste yummy things and not a bland processed cereal. Just my opinion.

  • @rspalding001 a-ha! I agree with that. I didn't realize baby-specific oatmeal and cereal was a thing.  :D

I waited till 6 months with my first and started her on oatmeal. She had an oatmeal intolerance (not an allergy) and always threw up when anything had oats in it. It lasted 2 years and she hasn't had anything with oats for the last two years. It was a great excuse if I never wanted to share my food. I finally gave her an oatmeal cookie this week, by accident and let her eat the whole thing just to see what would happen, and she seems to have grown out of it. She will be 4 next week.

This time I started at 4 months. I did rice cereal, and bought the beechers nut brand of level 1, supported sitter, at 4 months type of food. We've done apples and sweet potatoes. I have also mushed up a plain ole banana too. She's so interested in us eating and I figured Drs are suggesting to start at 4 months whereas 4 years ago they strictly said to wait to 6 months. It's been fine so far. I only introduce every few days and give a little at a time. I've heard if there is an allergy it's usually the second time not the first time a food is given that you see the allergic reaction. At least that's what a dr said to me once.

  • B eyes were extra goopy this morning. They don't look red or swollen though. Could it be part of his cold or is pinkeye more likely
  • I'm basically doing the same thing as @camcbeth except I'm doing oatmeal instead of rice. So far S has had oatmeal, bananas, sweet potatoes, and corn. So far so good. She seems to really like it.
  • @kvruns this happened to us twice last week but was just a little cold he went through pretty quick!

It was sinus related for us too. But when in doubt express a little breastmilk in there!

Like the corner of the eye?
  • Ok his eye goo is a bit yellow now in the inside corners. Is that still ok ?
  • Yes in the corner of his eyes and yes yellow is OK. It's probably mucus. Our LOs have sinuses that run pretty close together so when they get runny noses, it comes out their eyes too, especially after sleeping.

  • For those of you baptizing your LO; are you getting a gift for the god parents? And if so what are you getting?
  • Ughhhh majorly slacking on the baptismal front. Our church had a fire... over a year ago now? They're still renovating and as shallow as it is, I want to wait til it's finished.

    So, I'm no help, @kristah2

While we aren't baptizing, I am a god parent and received a sentimental framed photo of all of us after the fact.

  • When do they usually start sitting up on their own? I'm really looking forward to grocery store trips with him in the cart.
  • @kristah2 A is being christened in June. We're doing framed photos for the godparents but they also have to travel pretty far so I'm getting my best friend a massage at a place near her house and my husband's best friend is getting a beer of the month club 6 month subscription. If they were local, I'd probably just do the framed photos.

  • @RhodaMorgenstern good idea! Ours are travelling across the country for us as well and their flights are costing quite a bit so that's a great idea!
  • B got sent home for a fever. I thought he felt warm this mornig but I took his temp and it was like 98.something. They measured him 101+ 4 times. I measured him at home and am getting 98.something on forehead and both ears.  I'm wondering if my thermometer is bad. We tested it before and its always been in the 97/98 range so I figured it was working but now I'm not so sure.

I have an old school kind too I guess under the arm? Wish I could find my ones I used to track ovulation but I lost it

  • @kvruns have you checked it rectally? That's the most accurate. Poor little guy!!!

No I don't have another one to use since I can't find my other ones

i gave him Tylenol and he's happy and chatty now. I just don't feel like I can accurTely monitor his temp ugh
  • I'd run out and get a new thermometer so you can do a rectal temp. Those temporal thermometers are complete garbage.

I feel like I hear mixed reviews. But my Dr's office uses one in the ear and when I told them I had one that did forehead and ear they said that was fine to use

In the hospital (6 weeks old) we were told those are not accurate readings at all. The most accurate is rectal and then arm pit which is usually a full degree lower and can also be manipulated by what they're wearing, took a bath, etc... we were told forehead and ear are no good.

We were also told by hospital and pediatrician to do rectal only.  We use a safety first one.

  • Same story as @SandNStarsNJ. Pretty sure our hospital stay was because the temporal thermometer gave a completely inaccurate reading. I would never use one again. And honestly, I thought doing a rectal temp would be a lot bigger deal than it actually is. Not worth it.

  • Anyone's baby poop smell like vinegar? He's had 2 poops since being home with the fever and it smelled very vinegary. I've read it could be bc of sickness or an intolerance but I haven't eaten anything new this week so hoping it is just another sign of his cold?
  • As long as he's sick @kvruns, I'd chock everything up to his body is fighting something.

  • How long do you keep giving Tylenol? He's had 3 doses each time and it always perks him up right away. Should I just see how hot he feels before giving again or stay on top of a Tylenol regimen for 24 hours or whatever.  I forgot to ask the how long to my Dr office yesterday I just focused on the "what If it doesn't work" part

Tylenol is only for when he has a fever and shouldn't be given less than 5 hours apart. I would take his temp if he feels warm or is getting really fussy if it's more than 5 hours since the last dosage. If that temp is at 100.6 or higher, give him a dose. You can do that for as long as he has a fever, but not closer than 5 hours apart and only if he has a fever which is 100.6 or greater for their age.

My baby's poops sometimes smell that way. She is formula fed. She hasn't had a fever yet and is not sick. I looked it up and I think its from teething.

  • @kvruns I definitely would monitor his attitude and temp before just giving Tylenol as a preventive measure. A little fussiness I would pass on medication. I'd only give meds if he was really uncomfortable/upset or spiking a high fever. I honestly wouldn't give Tylenol for a low grade fever unless whatever he was going through prevented him from sleeping at night.

  • Does anyone else's LO make noise and "scream" all day long?  Probably a silly question but S is NEVER quiet unless she is sleeping. Just wondering if my child is a maniac as H calls her lol.

  • @Ladybug2821 my LO has become obsessed with screaming. When I bring her down in the morning, I put her in the rock and play while I make coffee. For the last 2 days, my husband thought something was wrong because she was screaming so loud, he could hear her upstairs. But she's always smiling while screaming so she's fine. I think they've just figured out they can do it so now they're just testing it out.
