Re: April IVF

  • Hi! I'm joining late but hope to get to know everyone.

IVF cycle # -  This will be our second IVF cycle. We did our first which resulted in a baby girl in 2014. I was 37 at the time.
Currently, I am on my 4th day of microdose lupron and 2nd day of menopur/gonal f.
Tentatively retrieval is scheduled for 4/9 and transfer is 4/14 (DH's birthday!)
    Diagnosis is low egg reserve.

    Type - ER

Protocol - menopur, gonal f, ovidrel

what are you doing to pass the time?? - I've mostly lurked in this forum and googled success rates and stories. I'm mostly stressing myself out even though I know I'm not supposed to. This will be our only round left since we can not afford to pay for anymore cycles. And with the diagnosis of low egg reserve, and almost being 40, I fear that this is our only chance left using my own eggs.

  • WOW! Lots of activity in the last few days! Nice to see some people from March in here as well :)

@Rachel_leigh22 go fighter, go! I was in the same boat with my first ER and now am going into my second retrieval cycle for (FX) some more

@Ash_SE Great report! ER for me was super easy to recovery from, kudos to you for pushing thru. Hope you are feeling better today!

@Hopeful_mom The waiting is the WORST, but you had some great numbers! Your clinics grading also was not one I was familiar with... my single fighter was frozen at day 5 as a 5BB so it seems like you have a few going right along!

AFM, Still here waiting (and cursing and crying and stressing although trying not to stress) for my LH surge. I know that it can come later after an ER but I am seriously bummed that #1 it is pushing back starting stims, #2 possibly not even being able to use this period at all if I don't surge.  I've been googling and googling and while I see that it can happen, I have always been so regular it is just bumming me out *sigh*. You know we all know how our bodies so well once we get to this point in our TTC journey and then it doesn't do what it ALWAYS does? Ugh.  I now don't look forward to POAS each morning and having to answer DH "Not today" when he asks. (funny side note: now he asks about CM hahahah maybe I have been educating him too much on the female reproductive cycle and its physical signs)

Anyway, (im)patiently waiting to start back up again here and really happy to be able to keep up on everyone else's journey.
  • @munchkin02888 Follistim isn't bad. I have done that and Gonal and I prefer Gonal but my insurance currently only covers Follistim. It hurt more than Gonal but honestly was like a little burn for like 5 secs afterwards.

Kiwisun, I was in the same boat as you. I really wanted to do fresh because I just wanted it done and know of it would work. However the doctor talked me into PGS and a FET. Honestly 2 days after ER, I can say I'm so glad I decided that. I'm in no shape to be doing more shots and prepping for transfer. My body was really roughed up after ER. I feel like the PGS and FET will give us the best chance for success. However, I'm younger ( 33) and my insurance doesn't count it as an attempt unless an ER results in a transfer ( FET after included) so for us it was nothing to loose. Now if my insurance counted the FET as a 2nd attempt I would have done fresh since we only get 3.
    @kiwisun4385

AFM, I got my day 2 report. I have a few a little ahead,  1 a little behind , and 9 right on track. The doctor was very happy with this.

Day 1: 13 eggs retrieved and ICSI, 13@2pn

    Day 2: 3@5-6c; 9@4c; 1@3c

I'm not sure I still fit on this thread. I did April IVF because initially I was doing a fresh transfer on April 2 but now I'm doing a FET likely in late April/early May but I feel like I know the ladies here!

@cmiller73- I just happened to see your post and had to let you know you aren't alone! Are you waiting to ovulate to do priming? I have an ER/ET in Jan/Feb, and was going to do another cycle right after with estrogen priming after I ovulated... They checked my blood 6 times and did 2 U/S, but somehow i never ovulated by 34! So i just did 10 days of provera/estrace and now waiting (not so patiently) to get AF so I can start stimming. This is going to be like a 7 week cycle. I don't say this to scare you or anything :) For my second IVF, I never got a surge on the digital OPKs, but when I went in for day 21 bw, i had ovulated and kit missed it.

  • @JamieH2000 Thank you for the info! I have been toying with calling my RE's office to let them know I haven't O'd yet and see what they say. Ive read some people have O induced etc to keep up with their prime cycle but it is good to hear that maybe my OPK kit is just missing it.  I haven't had the regular signs though so Ive just been freaking out and probably stressing about it more than I should.  I will call my doc today and see what they think is best. I am on CD18 so maybe I can still get 'on track'!  THANKS!

  • Bummed just bummed.  I was all geared up to start meds last friday and my baseline labs came back good but I got a call from my doc and my antril follicle count was 6…6?!?  I kinda freaked out because with my last IVF my antril count was somewhere around 20 and I only got 4 eggs.  My RE didn’t seem concerned she said that since I had been on the birth control pill for a few months that can happen.  She said we could either try stiming for a few days or just scrap this month and so a natural cycle and see what it looks like after that.  We decided to wait a cycle but I’m not thrilled about it because we have been basically out of the game since our FET in October.

I’m just having such a hard time shaking this set back.  In comparison to the rest of our journey this really isn’t a big deal but I just have this fear that somehow my fertility has lessened even more and my ovaries are quitting on me before I’m ready to quit.  And have been just stressing over it all week.  Has anyone else ever been benched for low antril counts and seen improvement the next time around?

@daisy222-2 I’m so sorry your drugs are not responding well for you. I would say try again next month.  I know its a tough call but IVF is so expensive and crazy.  Glad you were able to convert to an IUI cycle so you can at least some kind of chance and if not hopefully a new protocol next month will give you better results.

@i-wanna-b-the-girl-w-most-cake I haven’t told my employer.  For my last retrieval I got lucky and it was over a 3 day weekend.  This time around I’m planning to just ask to take a personal couple days for a family “thing”  I’m lucky in that my work is pretty flexible and I can’t imagine my boss saying no.  Though if my situation was different I would likely just call in sick.  I don’t want people at work knowing I’m doing IVF because honestly I don’t want to deal with them asking if I’m pregnant if it doesn't work….or actually I don’t want them asking even if it does.

@Rachel_leigh22 that sounds like one heck of an emotional roller coaster.  Best wishes that your little fighter will be with you for the long haul :)

@JamieH2000 thanks for relating and thanks for snapping me out of the pity party! I called my RE and they are bringing me in for testing tomorrow to see the best course of action. At least I am doing something, not just sitting, peeing and being disappointed. :)

@2MomsHoping my baseline for my first ER was 2 on each side. I went from that to 25 measurable follies in 10-12 days. I am sure your doctor will steer you in the right direction.  Going into our second cycle, my RE said we should wait and check the baseline before moving forward, then he saw I only had 4 on day 2 and grew so many, he threw out that idea and said it wouldn't be a good indication for my since I responded so well to the stims
  • Thank you @cmiller73 that gives me some hope.  I think even if we have low counts next month we are going to give it a go and just hope for the best.  My RE did say antrils aren't the end all be all but thought I might get a better response with some patience.  I think my patience will definitely be out by next month

  • @2MomsHoping BCPs drive down my ANC so much that my doctor doesn't do them with me anymore.  If you've had a good response to stims before I suspect that once you're off BCPs that your ANC should go up.  Don't lose hope! The waiting part is the worst part of the infertility game :(

  • @cmiller73- so glad I could help and I agree it's so much better to just have BW and see how things are looking. If you haven't ovulated yet, I would bet they have you come back in a couple more days and maybe do an US to look at follies, but hopefully the test just missed it! Keep us posted :)

  • @ash_se thank you undid get a headache about 15 minutes after injecting. Was not bad at all injecting the headache hurt worse and minor cramping I got.
  • @2MomsHoping I was thinking what @radmom27 said about your AFC going up still after stopping BCP and starting stims. I guess our numbers are all relative. Don't know if this will make you feel better but even without BCP my AFC was only 9. As this is my first IVF I wonder if I'll have a similar decrease in count...baseline next week so we will see. From what had been explained to me though, more follicles should develop from the stims- but I'm a total newbie to this so someone please correct me if I'm wrong! I'm hopeful for you that it comes back up!!!

@munchkin02888 I'm glad it wasn't that bad for you! I'm getting nervous about starting those soon.
  • @2MomsHoping I'm sorry your AFC wasn't what it was last time and for the delay.  Like @Momifbysea, my regular AFC is 9 (last ER for IVF #1 they retrieved 12, but only 7 were mature).  Had my first monitoring u/s for the round this morning and it looks like we're looking at 8 with two more that may or may not decide to join the party (I'm still on 5 units of lupron for the duration).  But at my age I'm aiming for quality since I'm not going to get quantity.

Adding in the burny Menopur tonight - hopefully it will coax those other two along!

  • @artemis618 I'm with you on thinking quality over quantity! At my age in finding it helpful to focus on and repeat the thought "it only takes one" when I get stressed about it. The 8 sounds really great this time! Gl with the menopur...I have that in my meds package, let me know how it goes!
  • @JuliaGoolia719 oh awesome! I was on lupron before my egg retrieval but wasn't put on it again for this cycle before FET....hmmm strange. What patches are you being put on? Estrogen? I believe I start PIO shots on the 12th as well! I'm so nervous for those lol
  • IVF Cycle: #1!

Type: Fresh cycle- Should start stim around April 10th

    Protocol: Not sure yet

To pass the time: Fortunately work keeps me crazy busy- but in a good way. I absolutely love my job and most of what I do is considered "fun"/entertainment by most people's standards, so I'm lucky in that regard.

My biggest concern is I've been told to more or less cut out exercise which is frankly one of my favorite things to do. I LOVE to run and I think that is going to make me the craziest. I'm definitely going to have an extra hour or two in my day every day I will need to fill now.

    1st cycle of IVF started April 9, 2017. ER- 15R, 7M, 5F, 4 frozen, 1 transferred. BFN

    May 2017- Hysteroscopy

June-August 2017- 2nd attempt via FET. 2 Embryos transferred on 08/10/17. BFP, but ended in a chemical.

    November 2017- Hysteroscopy

    January 2018- 3rd attempt via FET. 2 Embryos transferred on 01/25/18. BOLD BFP on a HPT on 1/31, Beta # 1 on 2/5= 721. Beta # 2 on 2/7- 1903. 6wk+3 day scan revealed twins!

    I'm blogging about it here

  • Just a quick update, I have my egg retrieval tomorrow morning.  I am still hoping to do a fresh transfer if my Progesterone is below 1.5 - but if it is over then I will have to do a frozen transfer instead.  Time will tell!  I am hoping I get lots of eggs tomorrow, and an easy recovery!
  • @radmom27 It gives me comfort that you also had low ANCs after taking BCPs I guess I just need to sit back and give patience a try.  Sometimes I think I’m going through all this just because I need to learn how to have patience….its really not something I’m very good at :P

@momifbysea I think it just depends on how you respond to the meds.  I had weird responses and didn't get many eggs from my last IVF so it might just be my body being a bit on the odd side.

@kiwisun4385 best wishes for you retrieval tomorrow I hope you have lots of mature eggs!!!  Good Luck!

  • @Momifbysea Thanks - last round I did the Menopur along with the Gonal-F from the start, this time we waited till day 5 (tonight) to add it in to mix it up.  I enjoyed "only" having three shots for the first four nights, now I'll have four per night till the end (last time I did antagonist with only three days of Cetrotide).  Really hoping this cycle goes better!

@Dragonfly6191  What were you told regarding exercise?  I don't even like exercising (I go to the gym for spin/yoga every day before work, but mostly to miss traffic) and found the physical activity (both exercise and pelvic rest) restrictions limiting.  I had reschedule a ski trip last month because they didn't tell to me (and I didn't ask) about not exercising or two weeks post ER.  I lucked out and had no exercise restriction (just pelvic rest *sigh*) post hysteroscopy (also last month), which was good because I'd months before signed up for a 5k 3 days after.  They didn't actually say anything to me about restricting exercise during stims, but after about a week last time my ovaries felt very heavy and the risk of ovarian torsion scared me enough not to push it.  All these AM monitoring appointments keep me from the gym anyway...and "strolling" on the treadmill is even more boring than spin class.

Sounds like a lot of ladies will be starting stims soon - good luck everyone!  @kiwisun4385 Hope you get April IVF off to a great start!

  • Good luck Kiwi!!!!
  • @kiwisun4385 thinking of you this morning and hoping ER goes well with lots of eggs and a smooth recovery!
  • @JamieH2000 so went to have BW at the doc yesterday and NO progesterone and YES estrogen, so I do have an eggie in there somewhere! Level is about 145 so the nurse thinks I will O any day now.  Now POAS twice a day so I don't miss this damn thing! :)
  • Good luck today @kiwisun4385!

@Dragonfly6191 I cut back too and just do yoga and lots of walking, but honestly, when I'm on stims I don't feel that great and want to do much more than that.

I had my retrieval yesterday and they were able to get 6 eggs, so double what they got last time.  This retrieval was a little tougher than my last one.  I guess I started hemorrhaging during the retrieval and lost a lot of blood and my blood pressure dropped, so I had to be kept under anesthesia longer and get a few internal stitches.  Luckily everything is fine but I don't do well with anesthesia so yesterday the recovery was rough.  Lots of puking, trouble breathing and super sore abdomen.

still sore today but at least I can breathe!  They just called and two fertilized again so we go back Monday for a fresh transfer!
  • @cmiller73- glad you didn't miss it!! I feel like all the meds during a precious cycle can delay a cycle a little if they suppress you so hopefully it will be any day now! I would only give it like 5-7 days and if you still don't see it, ask for more bloodwork. There is so much waiting in this game!! I took my last provera 6 days ago and still waiting for AF so I can get started!

  • Thank you everyone for all of your kind words!  I am home and doing well.. just a little pain, so I'm gonna try to rest today.  They were able to retrieve 20 eggs, and I will find out how many fertilize tomorrow.  Overall, it went much better than I was expecting it to.  You ladies that have gone through all of this multiple times are super tough, I don't know if I could go through all of the stims again.. they made me exhausted, nauseous, emotional.. oh man!  Hopefully the worst is over!

@Aera11 Best of luck for your fresh transfer on Monday!
  • @Ash_SE WHOOP WHOOP! That is amazing news! Congrats and FX for PGS :)

Did you get your fert report yet @kiwisun4385
  • Hello.  Currently 38, soon to be 39.

Type - ER in mid April, with PGS.  FET sometime later.

    Protocol - Long Agonist

what are you doing to pass the time?? - Currently doing lupron injections and I am looking forward to the baseline u/s on Tuesday.  I will know if the cycle is a go or no go after that.  Currently baking & cooking (to distract myself, and I love to eat), and catching up on shows.

    FET#1(July 2017): eSET of first of 4 PGS-normal embryos, DS born 3/30/2018

  • @Ash_SE NO! Ugh. The "other line" on the stick though is starting to peek through so hopefully soon.  So annoying.  Super happy for you and those results! Hoping to have some like that for our little adventure in the next month or so ;)
  • Thats wonderful news @Ash_SE, and I've got my FX you get a good report @kiwisun4385!

@cashewchicken we're nearly on the same cycle! I've been on lupron and am going for my baseline u/s tomorrow - good luck with yours on Tuesday!
  • Hi everyone! I tried posting this yesterday but for some reason it wouldn't go through

    IVF cycle - #3

Type- ER mid April but doing "freeze all" cycle. ET at a later time.

    Protocol- Luteal Stimulation

what are you doing to pass the time? - spending time with my family, gardening, baking and walking

I have my baseline u/s on wednesday and hoping all goes well so we can start injections on Friday.
  • I got my fertilization report today, they retrieved 20 eggs, 11 are growing properly, 4 are questionable, and 5 were discarded.  I was very happy with those results!  My progesterone level went up pretty high, so I will now be doing a FET most likely towards the end of April / Beginning of May.  I was in quite a bit of pain yesterday afternoon when I woke up from a nap.. but feeling SO much better today.  I was very thankful to have the 2nd day off to recover and take it easy.

@Ash_SE That is awesome results!! Congrats!

@radmom27  Isn't it funny that we are actually excited to get our periods?  Hoping I get mine shortly too!

    @cashewchicken    Welcome!!
    @mjpbarretto     Welcome!!

  • Thank you @kiwisun4385. How long does it usually take before they do a FET?  I'm doing a freeze all cycle and trying to calculate when they'll transfer.
  • Congrats on good results, @Aera11, @kiwisun4385, and @Ash_SE! I am excited to hear so many good reports.

I am getting more and more anxious about how many embryos we will have to work with. The donor egg bank I am using provides six eggs in a lot. The lab will thaw and fertilize with DH's fresh contribution using ICSI and then I will be holding my breath for a few days.

I've never been through this, but reading your updates, it sounds like the labs call you with fertilization reports. Is that a daily update or just at the end?

  • @mjpbarretto welcome! Looks like we are only a couple of days apart as my baseline US is Thursday, hopefully starting stims Monday morning.

@cashewchicken hello and welcome! Hoping all goes well tomorrow so this cycle can go forward for you. Here I'm so nervous to start this first cycle- you all who are on/have done multiple IVF are my heroes!

@Ash_SE what a fabulous day 5 report! That's so exciting!
  • Fresh transfer complete! How long before the hcg trigger is out of our systems?  I didn't test early last time & was blindsided by an early AF...thinking of testing this time.
