GD check-in

Re: GD check-in

  • Is anyone who is diet-controlled doing NSTs? I forgot to ask about it at my appt today.  So far, my OB hasn't brought it up.

I did get a chance to ask about the baby's size. Last time I saw a different OB and she said his abdomen was measuring in the 97th percentile.  She was concerned about it.  This time, I saw my regular OB and she wasn't concerned at all because his head is also measuring at 97 (yikes). DD has a large melon too so I feel better about that.  OB also wasn't too interested in induction unless I am.  She said she probably didn't want me to go much past 40 weeks depending on how I was progressing.

  • @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot I was considered diet controlled last pregnancy and didn't have to do NSTs. I was also just monitored by an endocrinologist not MFM.
  • @PghMom412
That reminds me, I was diet controlled last time too and didn't do them.  I have such amnesia from my first pregnancy.

  • That sounds like good news @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot. My midwives honestly don't seem to know what they're doing with GD, but they haven't mentioned NSTs or anything extra or different except the 36 weeks growth scan.
  • @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot - Before I started insulin, I asked my doc about it, and she said they only do NSTs (twice a week starting at 32w) for the peeps on meds.

I was told the same information
  • I'm diet controled and not doing NST for GD (I'll be starting them this week or next though, but because this is an IVF pregnancy).

@jayandaplus my GD practice through doctors is pretty hands-off too--they had fairly strict parameters for avoiding meds but once I was labeled diet-controled and dismissed I've been pretty much left to my own devices. I'm supposed to check my fasting numbers and one meal a day but I don't report them to anyone, I don't have any extra appointments or scans or tests at all, and the OB won't consider inducing until after 41 weeks. It feels a little weird. So your midwife practice isn't too far from my experience!
  • How's everyone doing?  Anyone have suggestions for bed time snacks that aren't dairy?

  • I'm super used to the food tracking and stupid needles, but gosh, I can't wait to just eat whenever I want and not think about the amount of carbs and/or protein balance. Just 4w and 5d left! :)

Some non-dairy bedtime snacks I've done:
    • Piece of low-carb bread with peanut butter
    • Mini-Larabars or Cliff bars
    • Sandwich w/either one piece of bread or lettuce wrap instead
    • Applegate chicken nuggets
    • Popcorn
    • Pistachios
    • Tuna w/some avocado and crackers
  • I'm at the point where I'm just trying to do as low carb as possible, period. I can't even get close to 60g, and all my providers seem fine with me not eating the recommended amount of carbs.

My go-to snacks: Celery and pb, cheese slices with meat slices, veggies with ranch

@PghMom412 Have you heard of arctic zero ice cream? It's non dairy (but some have whey), low sugar (hardly tastes like anything half the time). I've had it once with GD and my numbers were fine, but I used to eat it a lot when I was dieting years ago. They have a bunch if flavors. It's nice when it gets hot or you want "dessert". It's not sold everywhere, my Kroger sells it and then some "healthier" food stores, and some WalMarts.
  • Thanks for the suggestions @saric83 and @jayandaplus! I'm struggling with reflux and GERD in general so hoping that cutting dairy from my evenings and bedtime snack will help. My go to has been a cheese quesadilla. I'm going to look for that ice cream because every pregnant lady should be able to eat ice cream. Also I totally forgot about pistachios!
  • I have a snickers ice cream bar every night so I'm not much help on the nighttime snack.  Maybe some PB and crackers? or cheese and crackers?

Starting last week (35 wks), my numbers have been ridiculously easy to manage. My fastings have dropped from high 80s to mid 70s and I can eat almost anything and get below a 125 1 hr post meal. I was worried this might be an indication that my placenta was failing.  My OB isn't concerned, though, and said to enjoy it. I don't remember this happening with my last pregnancy.  It's nice, but I'm still so much of a worrier that it bothers me.

  • @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot Hmm... did your OB say why that could be happening? I'm with you, I'm such a worrier it'd be hard for me to enjoy. But it sounds great!
  • @jayandaplus She said that the hormones often level out after that 32wk spike and it can be more manageable then.  I should also add that I asked the tech at our 36wk growth US to double-check the placenta and he said it looked totally normal for 36wks.  I have "tested" things a bit and have squeaked out a spike after a super rich dark chocolate flourless cake.  White cake didn't spike me.  I am having fun testing my limits but won't make a habit out of it.  I'm trying to keep to the regular diet as much as possible but I've been able to go back to some of the "good" stuff (multi grain/whole wheat bread) that I couldn't have before.

  • @notaplaya-justcrushalot If the tech said your placenta looks good and your OB said it can happen, it'd say try to enjoy it! I'm still stuck in a no-carb/sugar/anything good hell, so I'm jealous. :)
  • Oh wow the babies are starting to come in our little mini-club! Congratulations @fbmandy55 and @n&a0630 (sorry the tag always gets wonky with your name)! And @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot that's huge news about your upcoming induction!

It's great to hear that most of us seem to have adapted to solid GD management these days, whether through continued diet strictness or spontaneous sugar stabilizing or a little bit of occasional "eh, f it, I'm going to eat some of this brownie/bread course at this restaurant/dairy before 10 am" (hi, me). Everything felt so hopeless when I was first diagnosed and now it's pretty routine. This thread has been a life saver. We are all so close to the finish line (if not already there)!
  • Congrats @fbmandy55! I'm green with envy, but so happy for you!!
  • I had a dr appt yesterday and I have ketones in my urine.  I'm trying to do the max carb amount at each meal without causing any spikes to try and get rid of the ketones.  The midwife told me the drs that are on call for a few of the days in the next two weeks and I'm not thrilled that my least favorite one seems to be around a lot.  The baby is a little on the small side, particular certain body parts.  She didn't seem concerned, but I was up all night worrying.  My husband and I wondered if it would be better for both me (to get rid of the ketones) and her (to get more nourishment) if I went ahead and delivered so we could start eating a more regular diet. I am so over this and have definitely accepted that this will be my last child unless we adopt. I can't go through this again.

On top of all that, I had several meetings today to finalize my maternity leave and end of school year paperwork that I will otherwise miss.  When I went to get my daughter up, she had a temp over 100.  Of course, now she is playing and acting like she is perfectly fine after I have already taken off work and canceled my meetings.
  • @cmcookaln Sorry about the bad news! I bought ketone test strips for testing at home, $10 on Amazon for a ton of them. It might help to track that, because ketones can be in your urine for other non-GD/carb reasons. (Dehydrated, when you first wake up, etc.) I know this diet and diagnosis is so daunting, but hang in there! Do you trust your healthcare team other than the one MD? If so, maybe let them guide the delivery time. Thinking about you!
  • How is everyone doing? We are getting so close.  I hope everyone gets great news and the diabetes disappear for all of us once we deliver.  I'm not really sure what's going on with my numbers, but they have been exceptional for the last week regardless of what I have eaten. I had one Krispy Kreme donut for breakfast Tuesday and one Wednesday with 2 hour post readings of 80 and 82 so today I decided to be a daredevil and eat two Krispy Kreme donuts for breakfast and had a 2 hour post reading of 85. WTF?! but I'm really not going to complain about that.
  • @cmcookaln Woah! So jealous!! I can't even look at a donut, but if I'm good my numbers are good. I'm having some of my best numbers,  but I still have to behave 100%. Unfortunately, I still get bad readings here and there, but my providers aren't worried. I truly hope this doesn't linger past birth.
  • Well I'm super jealous. I still have to watch what I'm eating to keep my post prandial numbers under control. I had my follow up growth scan and baby's head is measuring 84th percentile, abdomen is 60th percentile. I'm terrified this baby will be huge, but my docs don't seem too alarmed yet. They just kept reassuring me that the ultrasound isn't very accurate at this point in the pregnancy. Then why do we have to do it and stress mama out??
  • @PghMom412 I hear ya! I have my growth scan tomorrow and I'm so worried. Everyone says baby looks small, but I started measuring a week ahead a couple weeks ago. Makes me so nervous! Measuring and u/s are not very accurate at this stage, so I hate that we do it so often!
  • @cmcookaln that's fantastic! You so deserve a donut break after your long GD management! I'm more like @jayandaplus in that my numbers are doing great at this point as long as I behave. Which doesn't mean I always behave--I've learned to build in treats, and every so often I have a ridiculous meal of indulgence and just ignore the number because I know it's from that and not part of a trend. So I'm not feeling as despairingly deprived as I did during the first month or two after diagnosis.

I do have to follow the rules perfectly to keep my fasting numbers under 90, which for me means absolutely no skipping a bedtime snack, not allowing myself to get dehydrated during the night, not testing too soon nor fasting too long. But sometimes I just don't waaaaannaaaa force myself to eat almonds at 10 pm, or chug water and be up all night peeing, or set my alarm, so I just accept the higher reading and move on--I've learned to live with a 91/92 once or twice a week.

Baby's measuring vaguely around 50%, so the doctor is ruling out macrosomia. I'm very pointedly not thinking about the whole testing for Type 2 after the baby is out though.

(I feel like this post makes me sound super irresponsible--I promise I am very GD virtuous the vast majority of the time!)
  • I'm so happy to hear it's gotten a bit easier for everyone! I've been enjoying some easy testing and "cheating" too. My kid is measuring off the charts at over 99th percentile, but so is his head which shall pave the exit path I guess. DD measured huge (well above the margin of error) and barely broke 7lbs. So I'm pretending this kid isn't huge too. Induction is roughly 10 days away so we'll see!!

  • I had Chinese food tonight and right when I was almost done with my well-behaved chicken and broccoli and two cheese wontons, I decided I should have some chicken fried rice.  Terrible idea!  For the first time ever, I had a reading above 130 at the one hour mark (144 and still 142 at two hours - ahhh), and I felt awful with instant headache and just blah.  Lesson learned....no ODing on the fried rice no matter how delicious it is!  Damn GD.
  • @saric83 Chinese food is on my must have list for my post birth splurges. I had a bite of DHs fried rice last weekend and instantly felt the sugar slump with a nice headache and felt really flush. It was crazy.  +1 to Damn GD.
  • cato99cato99 member
@saric83 @PghMom412 I made a bastardized version of fried rice last night using farro and a lot of green vegetables (asparagus and baby kale) as a side for some steak, and made enough to have lots of leftovers. It really hit that salty-chewy spot and I knew exactly what went into it (e.g. no sauce with added sugars), so it's easier to experiment to get to good numbers instead of the big mystery restaurant food ingredient question mark, you know?
  •  I have been so bad lately.. I keep forgetting to check my sugars... I usually have 1 number between 120-130 a week so I find it hard to remember. I'm just ready to be done
  • @cato99 sounds yummy! I was experimenting with what I can add into a quesadilla. I've also turned my 2 year old into a quesadilla addict. She loves them!!

I've been super paranoid since baby is looking to be on the chubbier side (est over 6lbs at 36 weeks) at our ultrasound last week. We jumped to 83rd percentile but baby's head is measuring bigger than belly so I don't think I'm getting tossed straight to an early induction.
  • @PghMom412 I know it' so much easier said than done, but try not to be paranoid. Let your doctors do the worrying. They'll let you know if/when you need to be concerned. Until then, just keep doing what you're doing.
  • Sorry I've been MIA this week.  My DD was born early Sunday morning with a very quick delivery.  I didn't even have time for an epidural.  When I got to the hospital, I was 8 1/2 - 9 cm dilated.  There was 9 minutes in between when they got my IV started and when she was born.
I asked numerous times at the hospital about my sugar but they never checked mine.  Poor baby was checked every two hours with a feeding immediately following.  She had to have good numbers three times in a row.  She failed the last test by one (44 and it had to be 45) so we had to do three more checks which she finally passed.  I conveniently ran out of test strips Saturday night so I got my dad's yesterday and checked it twice.  Two hours post eating at lunch - 85 (rice, chocolate chip cookie) and dinner - 105 (sweet potato chips, potato salad, lemonade) with a fasting this morning of 81. Does anyone know what normal numbers are supposed to be?  I tried to look last night (during my nighttime feeding) and all of the numbers I found were for diabetics. I may check it a few more times here and there but I like having the freedom of not being committed to keeping my eye on the clock to check two hours after every meal.
  • @cmcookaln Congratulations on your baby girl!! I've been told they only check my blood sugar at my 6 month follow up. Normal BGS levels for nondiabetic people is 70-100, but some say up to 110. Especially considering you were eating carbs I think you're in the clear! Cookies and potato salad away!

So I've been cleared of GD after delivering my daughter (yay) but have still been reading your posts here. Good luck to everyone! You're almost through!
Edited bc my phone kept being dumb while I was trying to type.
  • They doubled my dose of meds, but the baby is still measuring perfectly! They decided to bump my induction back to 40 weeks, so I may get a due date baby! I'll take the good with the bad at this point  I'm already planning my post-birth meals. What are you ladies craving?

@cmcookaln congratulations!!!! That's an exciting birth story! Those numbers sound great--it seems like you can relax and just enjoy your baby girl :) You've been so careful with your GD management for so, so long: it's time to dive head first into potato salad!

My due date is Monday (5/8) and if she refuses to come I'll be induced a week later (5/15) so the end is nigh. My number one priority is going back to dairy milk lattes in the morning--all dairy is prohibited for breakfast by my dietician guidelines. Next I'm super excited to go into the summer without GD so I can eat all the summer fruits. You guys may want to buy stock in cherry orchards and mango groves and berry farms because I'm about to cause a significant impact in worldwide demand and profit margins.
  • @cmcookaln congrats! On both your new little one and those post baby numbers!! You enjoy those sweet treats. It's certainly well deserved.

At my BPP this week they measured my amniotic fluids slightly more than what the accepted norm is so we've scheduled induction for 5/24. I will be just over 39 weeks and am still coming to terms with having a date. I know it's what's best for baby and me so I'm just rolling with it. Everything else with baby looked great and he/she has passed all of our NSTs with flying colors.

My numbers have have all been decent with a few elevated readings (usually when I'm feeling adventurous or testing a new food craving). @cato99 It will be so nice to be able to stop worrying about all of the number crunching and actually enjoy fruit again for summer.
  • @arels483 Thats how I feel about fruit!
