GTKY: What makes you weird?

2

Re: GTKY: What makes you weird?

  • I'm a left-handed ginger so.... there's that.
You and my son seem to have that in common. At least so far he's a pretty strong lefty.
    My kid too!
  • Loading the player...
  • This conversation is great...  DH and I had a similar talk on our first date and I think it's what sold me on him (couldn't date someone who couldn't deal with my brand of weird).

When I was a kid, and through college, I had to start up each set of steps with my left foot and end with my right.  I learned if each stairway in my everyday life was even or odd and would have to concentrate on new sets so I could end properly (skip steps, etc.).  I don't know how/why this went away, but it did.

Also, I've always had a horrible fear of getting lost.  Even in high school, I kept a map of our hallways in my binder and wrote out directions for between each class.  When we had pep rallies or other changes in schedule, I would have a really difficult time and had to find a buddy to walk to the auditorium with, just in case I couldn't figure it out myself.  Thank goodness for smart phones and GPS, now I'm only slightly anxious when I drive somewhere new.

I still really like things to be even.  Candy is a good example.  I'm definitely a sorter of colored candies (Skittles, etc.) and I like there to be even numbers of each.  If not, I pair them and really struggle if things can't be made into a twosome.  Most importantly, I try to make sure that if I chew this candy on the left side of my mouth, the next one goes on the right.  And, for irregularly shaped items, like chocolate covered nuts, I try to pick out pairs of two that are similar sizes so my mouth/teeth are getting even usage.

Lastly, I'm also a no favorites kind of person.  I have no favorite color, song, movie, food, etc.  There are just too many things that I like and I can't create simple lists ranking things in preference.  This made planning our wedding really difficult.  We didn't have a color theme or flowers because I just couldn't pick.  DH had to pick the important songs for the first dance, etc.

  • @marriedhamstermom I am also not a bridge fan. I tense up and pretty much hold my breath whenever I drive over them (which is often because I live in a port city). I do the same thing in tunnels. Thanks to the Sylvester Stallone film Daylight.

I have to have butter with my peanut butter. And, this one is really weird, I scratch my belly button. It's a childhood habit that has persisted well into adulthood. At least I don't still suck my thumb at the same time, I guess?
  • I have extremely strong opinions on really weird things, like colors.  Purple, yellow, and orange are a no go for me in pretty much all circumstances.  Part of this is because of my skin tone and part of this is because of NYC.  I think black is the best color, followed closely by grey.  I will also accept anything in the teal to aqua spectrum.

I use pretty specific speech patterns because I am a language nerd, and I get really annoyed when people pick up my sayings.  Get your own sayings.  These are mine.

I hate having my legs cramped in a small space, and will completely freak out if I can't move them when I need to.  I feel the same way about a shirt I can't get off.  Ohmygodgetitoffme.

I twirl my hair and I don't care that you think it makes me look ditzy and I'm not going to stop just because it annoys you.  I've done it for 30 years.  Not stopping now.

I can type really fast.  Like, really, really fast.  We had a dictator of a typing teacher in middle school, and it became like a competition to do really well in her class.  I type upwards of 100wpm.

I could go all day with this stuff.  Apparently I'm super weird.
  • I seem to have quite a few that are already mentioned, which makes me feel less weird! I also see the days of the week, months, and numbers in a circular pattern and each set is different. I have mild OCD tendencies that have gotten better but still not gone. Like if I listen to a song and something bad happens after, I can never listen to that song again because it's bad luck. Also I used to have to follow the same night routine while getting ready for bed or something bad would happen. I used to be a 100mm hurdler in high school so now when I walk on concrete, I count my hurdle steps (0...1,2,3 hurdle). My food can't touch on my plate either, unless they belong together like turkey, gravy, and mashed potatoes. I can't walk barefoot on long grass because when I was a kid I stepped on something gross (I think?) and it apparently still haunts me.

One that may seem weird to some people: I think serial killers are fascinating. Like the psychology of why they are they way they are and why they did what they did. I also love true crime and listen to a couple of podcasts the talk in depth about cases.

  • @jlellis603 my husband shares your creepy serial killer fascination. Re: true crime: did you listen to the first season of Serial? I loved it! And it's a local story for me
  • @jlellis603 I love serial killer stuff too. I've read so many books on serial killers and I watch so much true crime stuff. Or well I did, I've cut back a bit while being pregnant b/c while it probably wouldn't happen because of what I watch/read I don't really want my child to become a serial killer haha. In high school one of my favorite shows was called Most Evil and I really liked it because he went into the psychology of how their brains worked differently from the average person.

@MommaBean I loved the first season of Serial! That's so cool that it was local story for you! Did you hear about the case while it was actually happening or find out about it later b/c of the Podcast?

  • @MommaBean nice! I like your husband haha. I did listen to the first season of Serial! I liked it a lot too - that's so cool it's a local story for you! For you/your husband and for you @marriedhamstermom I would recommend the podcasts Last Podcast On The Left (just weed through all the weird ones about UFOs haha), My Favorite Murder, and Up and Vanished. I am just about caught up on all of them and trying to get the creepy murder stuff in before the baby gets here haha! hamstermom, did you watch Criminal Minds? I used to LOVE that show and working there was like my dream job!
  • @Gretchypoo you are the person that drives me insane on escalators. JUST GET ON DAMMIT! :)

@MommaBean @marriedhamstermom I was completely obsessed with Serial. Listened like 3-4 times and even joined reddit to read all of people's crazy theories.

  • @MissMerciBeaucoup I had something similar where I felt like I was pretending to be "grown up" until I was almost 30! I had jobs, had gone to grad school, moved across the country, lived with a serious bf (and on my own), so I never really knew why I felt that way. Now I definitely feel like an adult - and sometimes it sucks haha!

+1 to not having favorite things. And part of my previous job was to run social groups for children on the autism spectrum - one of the activities we would do was ask and answer favorite-things-questions so I just had a stock answer for most questions.
  • +1 to being into true crime.  We watch a lot of documentaries and things in that vein although I wasn't a big fan of Serial and really didn't understand the hype at all once I listened to it, sort of liked the Jinx.  We've seen some great ones though - The Staircase especially is a really compelling 8 part series, The Trials of Darryl Hunt, Paradise Lost, West of Memphis, Murder on a Sunday Morning, Brothers Keeper, Into the Abyss... I could go on for days.  Although I hate things about serial killers - we watched a documentary about BTK once and I really wish that I could scrub it from my brain, I think of it occasionally and I just wish I could entirely forget about it.
  • Also Serial season 1 was awesome. I wish I'd liked the second season, but I just couldn't get into it. I also liked Making a Murderer on Netflix.
  • @jlellis603 I'll look into those! I'll probably listen to the UFO ones too b/c I also like alien stuff... DH laughs at me but I love that show on the history channel where they are convinced that aliens have shaped our history and built the pyramids and stuff haha. I have definitely watched a lot of criminal minds. Of those types of shows the original CSI is still my favorite though. You worked for Criminal Minds? That is awesome! I feel like the coolest thing ever would be to be a victim on one of those shows. Since I have no acting ability my actual screen time would have to be minimal though haha.

  • @marriedhamstermom ohh no I didn't work for Criminal Minds, but that would be pretty cool! I just always thought working for the BAE in Quantico would be like the coolest job ever haha.

@MissMerciBeaucoup oooo Staircase was good! .... but was it really the owl?! hahah

  • @MommaBean I loved the first season of Serial! That's so cool that it was local story for you! Did you hear about the case while it was actually happening or find out about it later b/c of the Podcast?
No, only bc of the podcast! I guess because I was only like 14 when it happened and the internet was in its infancy then... plus it was like an hour away, not right down the street.
  • @MommaBean oh man serial season 1 was our jam. We used to listen over dinner and discuss.  Then season 2 was so hard because that guy was so fucking unlikeable. I feel like I've encountered so many of these "lone wolf" men who feel like their moral code is above societal norms. It's such a common guy in the computer nerd community.

@PerraSucia I couldn't get H to listen to it! I'm like, "but you love murder shit!" I think he's just obstinate lol

ETA: season 2 wasn't nearly as good - there was no mystery! He deserted, plain and simple. Doesn't matter why.

Agreed, DH and I couldn't get into season 2 either. Part of the appeal of Season 1 was the question on if he did it or not. With Season 2 you know he did it and it seemed to just be questioning what his reasons were and I honestly didn't care. I hope if there is a Season 3 that it will be more like Season 1!

  • I did make it through Season 2 of Serial, but only because it was an interesting look into how the Taliban operates. I was unable to summon much sympathy for Bergdahl and found myself becoming irritated with Sarah Koenig when she did.
  • Yeah, no sympathy here either. And I don't think his time in captivity should have any bearing on his punishment -- that's not "time served." #heartless
  • Crime podcast people, is anyone listening to Crimetown? It's not a serial killer story, but it's awesome. Then again, I'm biased...

    No but now I'm curious!
  • +1 to feeling impostery sometimes :)

My weirdness is that I walk on escalators. On the left. The side that's for walking. In airports I usually have to say 'excuse me' about every other step. I do it anyway.

  • @Xstatic3333 I listened to Limetown, but not Crimetown! My interest is piqued!
  • Hmmm @NiceyMeany I hadn't heard of Limetown but I just Googled it and it sounds fascinating. The funny thing is they seem to be from different podcast producers even though they're both serials with similar names.

Crimetown is about the mob, and corruption that followed the former mayor of Providence, RI, Buddy Cianci, through his very long "reign" over the city. It's all pretty local to me so many of the places and events are familiar, but it's pretty highly ranked nationally right now (29th on iTunes) so I think it has broad appeal.

That irritates the hell out of me.

As a New Yorker, I fully support escalator walking! It's sort of expected in certain places and we all secretly ragehate people who don't do it.

This is a huge deal in Russia. If you stand in the left people will push you over.

Standing still on escalators irritates me!
  • At my appointment today, I remembered another weird thing I do. But it's actually quite handy. I have a thing with memorizing numbers instantly. I actually started humming to distract myself if I'm in a public place and hear someone start saying their phone number. So many people forget their shoppers cards and will use their phone number to access their account and get the credit, but if I hear the number I instantly memorize it and can remember it basically forever. One time I heard a number and repeated it to my husband and he wrote it down, a few weeks later he pulled out the paper to test me, and he couldn't believe that I still knew the number. A couple check ups ago I heard a secretary read off a telephone number with a different area code so I actually focused on it since I was curious, and it turned out to be my Dr's personal cell phone number. I guess if I really really need to, I can get a hold of her??? (Just kidding) And one time I googled someone's phone number just because I wanted to and I found all their personal info online like their name and address. I'm super cautious of having to say my phone number out loud now in public, in case there's someone like me around.

  • @MommaBean @Lafreeman21 and @Vastra you escalator walkers are the WORST. You give me such anxiety! I kind of hope you all fall down the escalator. I'm so anxious abt you all knocking me over, when I'm at the airport I put my suitcase next to me so no one can pass and knock me over. You can wait the 30 seconds, damnit.
  • True Crime fans I highly recommend "In the Dark" although TW:

Those of you with kidnap fears probably should skip it.

Its a really compelling story about missing persons and policing in small towns in this country.

  • I have an irrational fear of sharks that I had to get multiple forms of therapy for as a child....I've lived in the Midwest all my life. There was a point where I was terrified to take a bath or a shower because the shark could come through the shower head. And I was afraid sharks could come through the toilet. This is like, age 8-10 people. Pools and lakes and rivers could potentially have great whites and tiger sharks and hammerheads. At least in my mind. For the most part, I am over it now, but still play little games in my head at pools. like, as long as I am not alone in the pool there won't be a shark. So I am never the first one in, last one out.
