Crib bumpers

I've heard different things about crib bumpers  and which you should use breathable or a regular. What do most of you recommend ???

Re: Crib bumpers

  • Things may have changed in 3 years, so I'm not sure of the current guidelines. Last time, we used the breathable mesh crib liner, so he could breathe if he was squished up against it. That seemed safer than the thick solid plastic ones.

  • I believe anything but breathable/mesh bumpers are not recommended. We will not be doing any bumpers to start and then will likely switch to something mesh once limbs start poking through.

  • I have the mesh bumpers for my toddler and I find that they are not as useful as I would like. He still, plays around and gets his legs stuck above the bumpers. However I would not use the regular cotton bumpers for safety reasons.
  • @nda_roxybabe: good point. The purpose of bumpers is to keep little limbs from sticking through the slats. We ended up swaddling him all the time so maybe it was moot, but still a peace of mind thing.
  • Hi @missjenny  This has already been discussed in a previous thread.  You might be able to find it by searching this board.  At any rate, welcome.  If you are new, please introduce yourself and get to know us.

  • I also would love an intro from you so we can get to know you. Most of us have been around for awhile and we are always happy to have more to join us.

I had bought these pretty bumpers late into my first tri, not knowing any better. They never got used. We decided to wait and see how DD would do in the crib when she started moving around before buying a mesh one. She got her leg stuck maybe once or twice ever, so there was no need for it.

I'm also in the camp of "wait to see if it's necessary". If I need to buy a crib bumper, I'll get a breathable mesh one. But, if my kid doesn't stick their limbs through more than a couple times, I won't bother.
  • We had some issues with him getting stuck once he was more mobile and it's a good paci catcher so I used the mesh one although I know there are the super hardline folks that say they are a no no as well. I think we used it from maybe 6-12 months or so? Once he was walking he started trying to use the bumper like a step so I took it off.

  • This has been insightful! Well hell, if the majority of little limbs aren't getting stuck I wont even bother with a mesh one down the road.

  • No bumpers, no issues here. Planning no bumpers for this one, too.

  • We didn't use bumpers and we also never had issues. Plus if you use the sleep sacks its less likely they will have issues as well.

  • Team no bumpers here. We also used sleep sacks. She's only ever gotten her leg stuck once and that was when she was 2.

  • Samies for me. Bumpers were never needed.  A crib really only needs a fitted sheet and a swaddle or sleep sack until you graduate to a pillow and maybe security blanket. Even without a sleep sack he never got his limbs stuck. He might stick one out, but it was never stuck.

I asked this awhile ago in the randoms thread and got a unanimous response of no bumpers. So I guess thanks again for your input??

*So you know, NotaPlaya wasn't directing her comment at you. The OP of this particular thread was a drive-by, not you!!  :)
  • Yes.  Absolutely not directed at you, @SWE2

  • Oh I know! Thanks guys. Didn't mean to come off that way. Just saying I already asked this question and everyone was nice enough to answer it already so the person asking again could have already found the answer.
  • We didn't have a bumper for DD1 (no issues with limbs getting stuck in crib slats). I don't plan to buy one this time around either.

  • We bought breathable mesh ones from BRUS around 5 months old. My son was getting his leg stuck through the bars because he was moving around so much. It would wake him and he would cry which when your baby just starts sleeping through the night and he wakes up from something silly and preventable well.... you put in something to make sure he keeps them limbs in! I honestly have never seen him mouth pressed up against the bars and my son moves around the bed like crazy. He occasionally has the back of his head or the crown on the mesh and the ones I bought were like a foamy material, thick enough as a cushion for his head to protect from the bars but mesh and breathable if he did turn to it. I just took them out a few weeks ago and my son is 18 m old now. I won't put them in the crib with dd unless she shows the same need as my son did.
