A Big Thread for Dumb Questions

Re: A Big Thread for Dumb Questions

  • Ok guys, this is a non pregnancy related question. And it is for the vets or vet techs. My dog has barely any teeth left, she was born with little to no enamel, so it wore off until only denton was left. She has kinda strong fishy stinky breath, and it isn't from her food. Does she need to go into the vet? Actually both my dogs do, but hers is worse.
Not a vet tech, but my dog also has strong fishy breath.  We figured out it's actually from her anal glands (ick!)  We have to get them expressed every month or it gets super smelly and uncomfortable for her.  She's more of a nervous dog, and it seems to be related to her stress level. Is it a new problem or something that's been going on for a while?

Oh my gosh yes! I was an every other day washer and now it's so ridiculously greasy that I have to wash it every day.

I was a D before my first and grew to a DD. After birth your breasts get perky and firm so they are easier to control. Latching is something both you and baby have to learn so the nurses can help you, they taught me how to hold my breast so I’m not blocking the milk ducts or any part of my baby’s face (specially the nose) you will learn it as you learn how to breastfeed so it’ll be normal practice for you afterwards so don’t worry about it, it all works out J

The huge plus about having big boobs is that it’ll be easier to breastfeed while lying down lol

This is wayyyyy off topic but I wanted to ask here first before I start a thread and someone directs me elsewhere.
I know there is a specialty board for EcoFriendly Families but would it be okay for me to start a thread on the July BMB?  There isn't much action over there, at all, and I mostly hang out here anyways.

It's a little exspensive, so it's up to you. I would say yes but i would love to have one. This is the last baby so I'm afraid I won't be able to use it again, which is the only thing holding me back.

I just had to google what a dock tot was it looks useful! So many things I need to knowww I feel so behind.

I have a few dumb questions! I've started feeling cramps when I go to the loo. Is that normal? Should I be worried?

Is anyone considering buying the snoo smart sleeper? I can't buy it (it only lasts for upto six months!) but I would like to live vicariously through you. Suppose a super generous family member decided to get it for me, is it bad for the baby to be on something that moves? That too, electronically?

I wanted to buy a star projector for the nursery (I love stars!) but my Hubby is a bit cray and he always finds something negative in anything I want to do, is it bad for a new born to have projector stars on the Ceiling? I understand I shouldn't show mobile screens and limit tv screens and all that ...but projector ?!

I think i need to go on a vacation ALONE because my mum,DH and MIL are making me super paranoid and I'm usually a calm person.
  • @BusyZee I don't think there would be anything wrong developmentally speaking with a projector but personally I avoid anything that could become a sleep aid.  I've heard way too many stories about someones light or sound machine that broke and caused disastrous bedtimes until it was replaced.  We also travel quite a bit and I have no interest in lugging around sleep crutches that could get lost or broken and take up valuable suitcase space.  DS loves his A&A security blankets but we have about 15 of them in rotation, they are small and easily replaced.

Vet tech here! Usually with dental issues such as a buildup of calculus, fractured teeth or tooth abscesses, the mouth smells more rotten like death or a dead animal. If its a fishy smell, most times its when a dog licks their rear and expressed their anal glands at the same time. Anal glands smell a lot like fish. If she has a hard time eating, is dropping her food often, or has any swelling in her face, I'd go get it checked to make sure she doesnt need a cleaning or a tooth extracted.

Do infant car seats/carrier's come in different sizes? We have a 2 door Mini Cooper and I just thought of this. When we first got it 2 years ago I had a toddler cousin with a convertible car seat we would put in our Mini to take him places and we didnt have an issue. Didn't know if infant car seats were different.

  • @RubyRedPirate From our experience, the infant seat was bigger front to back. We couldn't fit our in DH's Nissan Juke without moving the front seat up as far as it could go. This didn't work for us, so we ended up car shopping. Funny side note: I was 38 weeks at the time, and my water actually broke that night. I'd try the seat and base together in the car to see.  Borrow one or go see if the store will let you try.
  • @RubyRedPirate yes different car seats (both infant carriers and convertibles) will be different sizes and will also have different rules about space required.  For instance some seats require an inch between the seat and the back of the vehicle seat, some just cant be touching etc.  Most Buy Buy Baby and Babies R Us locations allow you to test the seat in your vehicle, just make sure you are also aware of any spacing rules for the particular seat.

  • @BusyZee friends of ours have had the projectors for years with their kids. They love them. I was nervous about sleep aids (sound, light, etc.) but dd doesn't need them but she really like she them.
  • Anyone have insight on taking newborns on planes? What is the age they have enough of their shots and are ok to travel? My little sister is getting married at the end of September and we have to fly to the wedding.  Depending on when LO arrives, he/she will be between 2.5-3 months old.
  • @oheliza44 People have different opinions with this but I flew with DD when she was 8 weeks old. We had just had her 2 month shots and I didn't let anyone touch her.  I'll likely be flying with this one when he/she is 3 months.  My pediatricians have all agreed that after the first set of shots, it's ok, just take precautions.

I've had friends who have flown with newborns only a few weeks old for emergency situations so ultimately it's your call!

I know many people in my last BMB flew with their newborns. My baby was 6 months when we flew for the first time. All went fine. I mean, she did end up with a nasty cold, but it was no big deal.

It's fine. I wore high waisted snug yoga pants my whole last pregnancy (and this one), it helps me hold up the belly haha. No issues here.
  • @mars8k well, easier to feed when laying down unless you have my flop-to-the-sides boobs. They also pancake when I lay down. And mine didn't get super perky, probably why they still look good post BFing, because no stretching. Every mom is different
  • @rubyred pirate and @MrsLa3 thank you. Honestly, it would probably do her good to have all but two or three extracted because of the denton, but she doesnt show any discomfort with chewing so I have left it alone. They are mostly worn down to nubs at this point except the really important back teeth. Definately a fishy smell, pp also suggested anal glands. It's been awhile since I expressed them to be honest. Thank you
  • Here's my dumb inquiry for the day... how should multiple shower offers be handled?? This is my first pregnancy and everyone in our family is very excited, and some friends as well. So far, MIL has offered a shower (it was literally the very first thing she said when we told her), my best friend has also just offered to host a shower (she knows MIL and how she is about these sorts of festivities, but neither of their personalities would enjoy planning one together so that's not going to be suggested), and now my uncle has offered to host a "baby shower dinner" for DH and I at a really swank restaurant.

I appreciate all these offers and since they have all be given with the intention to celebrate with us and welcome us into parenthood... I can't imagine declining. It would hurt my MIL, best friend, and my uncle to not have the chance to express their excitement. Now, I realize that I can't have overlapping guest lists and I think I can find a way to make that work... only our parents and my best friend, and her husband, would be invited to all. Would that be tacky?

I really think my uncle just wants to host a nice family dinner to celebrate, but he'll also not miss an opportunity to give gifts. And MIL is basically Martha Stewart when it comes to hosting parties... not to mention DH is her "favorite" so she's definitely throwing a classic style baby shower. I don't really know what my best friend wants to do, she says she'll do whatever I want (even refrain to avoid pissing MIL off), but I don't want to hurt her feelings by telling her not to bother if she was looking forward to this.

Is it tacky to accept all offers and figure a way to keep the guest lists separate? #firstworldproblems

I literally just had this thought the other day!  I needed panty hose for something and all I had was the control top kind.  Somehow I made it through my entire first pregnancy without wearing panty hose?  A lot of women wear belly support bands towards the end of pregnancy so I guess it's no different than that!

  • Question about second baby showers since we're talking about those today- I moved to a different state since I had DD and my new friends here have mentioned wanting to throw me a Sprinkle.  We have pretty much everything already (except second crib and double stroller but we're buying those ourselves) so I was just going to do a registry with the big ticket items so that I could get my own completion discount.  Should I say yes to my new friends and make a registry with more clothes and small things?  Should I say thanks but no thanks since I have everything already?  The first feels unnecessary but the second feels rude.  My mom suggested saying yes but requesting hand me downs/thrift shop finds only.  Thoughts?  Help me with those etiquettes!

One of our two cars is small too, so we wound up getting the Cybex Aton 2 car seat. It was recommended by The Carseat Lady and was both the shortest front to back and the lightest seat we considered. You can find specs for each seat online and, as PP suggested, even try one in your car. No one sold the Aton locally so we tested with a different, bigger seat and just estimated how it would fit differently. I liked that seat a lot but haven't used any others to compare it to!

Yes, I wore my Flexi/maidenform camisole my whole pregnancy, and honestly, I felt unsupported without them.

I see no problem with it if they want to do it. If you'd like, you can pay for supplies, snacks, dessert and everything and just tell them to have fun with it. I wouldn't put restrictions on it, I find good buys on cute outfits at department stores all the time and it is exciting to get cutesy stuff for a friend's new baby. Let em  have some fun.

I would accept, but don't register. Don't request anything in pareticular regarding gifts. I think most places let you make your registry private so if people go searching for your registry they won't see all $$$ items. Otherwise just wait until after the sprinkle to make your registry for the discount.
  • @leilac I bought "pregnancy spanx." They're belevation brand and they're just like spanx but slightly looser on the belly while still supporting it, and honestly rounding it out a little for me as well. I usually use super tight spanx to suck in my gut so these are a little more comfortable for me at this point.

  • I have a dumb question.  Are those "baby is the size of estimates" just length and not width?  Or just really large exaggerations?  I'm 18 weeks today and apparently the baby is the size of a sweet potato?  What?  Where is he?  Because there certainly does not appear to be a sweet potato hiding in my abdomen.
  • tuxielove93tuxielove93 member

@Sassenach1743 I think you can safely accept all three and keep them separate. Let your best friend throw one for just your friends, MIL for her family, and uncle for yours OR MIL for the extended family and such, and since the uncle is throwing a very fancy dinner, keep the guest list small for just really important people (and maybe even make this one sans gifts, or after the baby comes so everyone can meet him/her). You can always even make the MIL or best friend one for after the baby comes and the other one for before. That will keep them separated as well. It's so nice that so many people want to throw you parties!

@OperaSingerMommy I think you're good to accept. If you need some diapers, baby shampoo and lotion, even if you are using formula or need new bottles, you can register for those kinds of things. And you could always just let the guests get some cutesy outfits since you already have the basics. If they want to do it, I say let them. I hear babies throw up a lot, so more clothes isn't really a bad thing.

It's definitely not width also, because mine is an artichoke this week (5.59 inches)! Also there is a "banana" week coming up... It's also only crown to rump at this GA, I believe, because the legs aren't exactly sticking out yet.
