Aiden or Aidan?

I know Aidan is the more traditional spelling (and is Irish, which I appreciate with my Irish heritage!) but Aiden is more common these days. If we used the -an ending would our kid be forever correcting people who spelled it with the -en since it's more popular?

Re: Aiden or Aidan?

  • There are so many kids with an aiden/Aidan/ayden name that I think it's possible with any of them you will get misspellings at some point but aiden and Aiden are the most used and I don't think it's something that will a huge issue or cause of stress

  • IMO Aiden is the 'normal' one, but I'm sure it's subjective.

  • And to me, Aidan is "normal," so that's how I would spell it.  I also like traditional spellings (like with my own name, I wish that so many people didn't mispronounce Gillian when it is the traditional spelling). I agree that at this point, either is fine though.

My first name is Sarah and I'm always amazed at how baffled people are about where to put the H when I say "Sarah with an H."
  • I would spell it Aiden if I heard the name, and I have a cousin named Ayden.
  • I have always considered "Aidan" to be the traditional spelling, but I agree with PPs that people got so crazy with it when it was trendy a few years ago that he's probably going to have to correct spelling whichever you choose. For you, I'd give a slight edge to the -an spelling anyway, since it is a nod to your Irish heritage.

  • I prefer the traditional spelling, Aidan.

Fwiw I have a popular name with Irish roots whose spelling has been greatly mangled over the last 30 years and I really enjoy that my name is spelled the 'right' way. People do misspell it all the time, but it has always made me feel good that my parents had liked the name for a long time and took care to spell it the original way, instead of jumping on a bandwagon and going with the trendy Americanized spelling. Guess I've always been a name nerd :P.

  • We used the traditional spelling.  People have misspelled it from time to time, but I really didn't care for the other ways it's spelled.

  • I like Aidan much, much better.
  • We named and spell our son's name Aiden. We chose this because when we were searching for names I read the Aidan is the female version.

  • My friend named her son aidan. I might have defaulted to Aiden bc of Aiden from Kate plus 8... but once I knew his name was aidan then I knew how to spell it so that wasn't a big deal. Yes he may have to correct people but I don't see that as a problem. Liking a name is more important than him having to correct people.

  • Aidan. No question.
  • Definitely prefer an to en. My stepson is Aidan and while there will always be misspellings, it certainly isn't enough to be overly worried about. And for what it's worth, every Aiden I had as a teacher strongly influenced my opinion on the en spelling, if you catch my drift.
  • I also vote for the traditional Aidan.  It's not a big deal to spell it for someone at the doctor's office, for example.  My name is Kelly, and I will often spell it in those situations or people will ask, "with a y, with an ey, with an i, with an ie?"  lol   All of those are normal, acceptable ways to spell the name.
