Any previous C-section mommas opting for a VBAC? I know it's been discussed off hand here and there, but I couldn't find anything in detail. I am very nervous to attempt a VBAC but am also dreading the recovery of another section with a one year old and an infant. My OB said she has no opinion on whether or not I'd be a good candidate because my previous section was due to baby being breach. She did say she would refuse to let me VBAC unless I got an epidural which kind of turned me off, but her reasoning made sense. Anyone care to discuss what they're deciding to do any why?
@Mother0fDragons she said that if anything were to go wrong and I needed to be rushed off for surgery to save the baby or myself that the epidural would serve as my anesthesia for that c-section. Otherwise they wouldn't have time to give me an epidural and I'd have to be put completely under.

An epidural for a c section instead of a spinal block??
@EmeraldNC that stinks. I teach third grade too and all my kids we're super sweet and grateful. I swear every year each class has its own personality, so thankful I have an awesome group this year.

I mean I've never had a C section but an epidural is not the same as a spinal block. Unless she meant that the cath placed for the epi could be used to administer the spinal block. That would make sense I suppose.
I mean the epi was good relief but I was not numb from it. I felt pressure with contractions and when DD came out, and I could tell I was tearing...I'd think you'd want to feel nothing at all for actual surgery.
My mom had a C with my sister in 1985 and felt the entire thing, no lie...today she'd probably have filed malpractice from it (she's really tiny and the Dr didn't want to OD her apparently?) She had intended to have a third kid, but not after that delivery.

We should definitely start a VBAC support thread!
I mi had a section with my first due to breech and a natural (no pain meds) VBAC with my second and I plan to do the same with this one.
I would say your doctor is pretending to be supportive but might push a c section at the end. I would find someone who is 100% supportive of a natural VBAC if that's what you want.
The doctor and hospital where I had my c section has a VBAC ban so my doctor actually recommended I switch and I'm glad she did. I found a practice that was 100% supportive. The only stipulation was they didn't want me to go much past my due date and they really wanted me to go into labor on my own. As I reached my due date we did 3 membrane sweeps to try to get me to go into labor. I didn't but I did dilate each time and was 3cm and effaced at 40 weeks so they scheduled an induction for 40+3. I ended up walking in to be induced at a 6 and fully effaced. I had been having contractions all night. So I didn't really have to be induced . They broke my water and he was born naturally about 5 hours later. It was an amazing experience.
I would contact your local ICAN group to find VBAC supportive doctors and info. There is no reason to force you to have an epidural.
I thought my morning sickness and nausea was better so I stopped taking unisom and B6. I was only taking it once a day. Definitely wasn't ready to stop. However I think my gag reflex is worse with my cold.
On on a side note, after today only a half day of work before a 4 day weekend for Christmas!!

Wow that's amazing! My OB said they wouldn't induce me either. I'll definitely look into my local ICAN group. I didn't even know that was a thing. Thanks for all the info!
Ugh. I have some sort of stomach bug. I spent the night in the bathroom. I'm starting to worry about dehydration!
This was me Sunday night through yesterday. I couldn't keep a thing down/in - just horrible. I did speak to my OB and given I was able to take in sips of water before the 24 hour mark, they didn't require me to go in for an IV (rehydration). They said keep an eye on your urine output and other hydration signs (dry eyes, dry mouth, etc). If you are too dehydrated and can't keep water in, you'll want to go in for an IV. As long as you stay hydrated, they said the baby should be fine.
I had a dream last night that I gave birth to a little spider, probably the size of a pencil eraser. I was able to nurse the spider a bit and then it hopped around and I lost my spider baby.
Add me to the stomach bug camp. DS has been sick since Monday and I had it yesterday. So much laundry, so much carpet cleaner. Im ready for this week to be over.

shucks. I hope tonight you have a dream that you found said baby spider.
I was finishing up last minute Christmas shopping this morning. I didn't feel so hot standing in line and by the time that I was paying, I had to hold on to the counter, thinking and feeling I was about to pass out.
I apologized to the cashier and had to sit down right there. This helped, along with going outside in the cold. I sat in the car crying out of fear and embarrassment for a good 15 minutes. Dr. Google seems to say feeling faint or dizzy is pretty normal.
Has anyone else experienced this in your current or a previous pregnancy?
My dog has been having diarrhea all over the house today. Normally I can handle it, but I have to throw up a couple of times before cleaning it. Please be over soon!!!!
@swanbrooner I had the same thing happen this morning. I started feeling really warm and shaky and then got kind of clamy. I was dizzy and went to cool off and sit down. I think my problem was blood sugar and not drinking enough water. Hope it doesn't happen again for you!
@swanbrooner I have been feeling that same dizzy and lightheadedness for the past few weeks. I have to sit down all the time! I am at the doctor now for my regular appointment, so I will ask and let you know!
@swanbrooner I had the exact same thing happen at a concern last weekend. Thought I was going to faint, got really dizzy, sweaty, and light headed. I have also had this happen while waiting in lines at stores. And also when I'm not pregnant. My doctor said it could be from my continuously low blood pressure. I most always feel fine after sitting down for a few.
@swanbrooner this happened to me while I waiting on my take out meal at Panera a few weeks ago...I had to go to sit at a table because I was definitely going to faint. I remember it happening once in my first pregnancy as well. Usually sitting down and then having some food and water help.
@doodleoodle I would agree with others who say your doctor really isn't supportive but may let you... I think the epidural/rationale is bogus... if it is trully an emergency, you're getting general anesthesia regardless - my mom had one with my little brother due to a prolapsed cord, the flipped the hospital side of the bed where her head was down, a nurse hopped up on her bed, and rode down the hall with her while pushing my brother's head so he didn't put any more pressure on the cord. They knocked her right out... no time for switching of meds for a spinal block.
As for me, I do not judge anyone for making the decision to have a VBAC and I truly believe in the benefits of a vaginal birth. My birth experience with my twins was terrible, sent in for induction at 38w3d due to heart decels but with variability so no emergency C-section... over 48 hours in L&D for cervadil, pitocin, pit holiday due to maxing out, then having coupling contractions, having to have meds to stop the coupling contractions so they could give me more pitocin, maxed out on pitocin again, and then they just regressed during checks, never made it past 1cm. If we broke Baby A's water it started the 24 hour clock on an emergency C-section and I just didn't want to risk it and have either child go into distress so I could have my med-free vaginal birth. So I walked myself down to the OR... I had so much guilt, sadness, etc. over not having the birth experience I had wanted that I think it took a toll on me emotionally those first few weeks. I would love a VBAC but I personally feel too selfish to do that as the baby is more at stake than the mother... main risks being uterine rupture, followed by baby's life, and then mom's life. For my personal risk tolerance, I'm opting for a practice that allows skin-to-skin in the OR, a very mother-baby low intervention (e.g. golden hour) supportive doctor, and going in knowing that we are keeping everyone safe but also trying to get some of the things I had been promised by my midwifery practice for a 'family centered surgical birth' that NEVER happened with my twins.
All that to say, I would look for another doctor if you really want a VBAC... and those doctors can be hard to come by...
@swanbrooner@Assiram42 Yep that was me. I'm the one who fainted in line at Target. Apparently my blood pressure is a tiny bit low (102/60) and my doctor thinks that could have contributed to me fainting. She gave me the "don't put off eating and stay well hydrated" speech. I've been making an effort to eat something in the morning even if I'm not hungry yet and it seems to have helped. So hopefully that's all it was.
Also @swanbrooner I totally hear you on the whole thing being embarrassing. I mentioned it to my husband and he was so upset with me because he was worried about me and baby. I assured him that we're both fine and the only thing that got hurt was my ego. I'm sorry you had one of those embarrassing moments also.

@doodleoodle, I agree with the others that your doctor doesn't sound like she's really supportive. If you really have your heart set on a VBAC you might want to consider a new doctor.
One of my BFF's is going for a VBAC. Her doctor said she's a great candidate and gave her no limitations whatsoever. Even encouraged her to start studying Hypnobirthing and to consider a birthing center. (Attached to the hospital and her doctor has privileges to both.) My neighbor had the same experience and successfully had her med free VBAC.
Both had emergency c/s after they had been in labor for hours.
@michaela0704 How awful! I am so sorry that you went through that. I don't blame you at all for opting for a RCS. I really wanted a pain med free vaginal birth with my daughter. I called the night prior to delivering and told the on call doctor I thought my water had a slow leak. She said it didn't sound like that and I trusted her. I went in for a regular check up the next afternoon and the OB confirmed my water had broken, that the baby was breach, and then I went into active labor. I was told to go directly to the hospital for a c section. After I got the pain medication the baby's heart rate dropped and they had to start the operation before DH was even in the room.
I have such mixed feelings on going for a VBAC. I know that the risks are small, but it doesn't matter how low the odds are if uterine rupture happens to you. The main reason I'm even considering it is because my recovery time from my section was awful. I don't want DD to see me like that and I want the transition from only child to big sister to be as easy on her as possible. I was a nervous wreck over everything last time though and didn't take the pain medication prescribed for me because the pharmacist said it could transfer to DD through my breast milk. If I do have a RCS I will definitely be taking the pain medication so I'm sure that will help.
@doodleoodle totally get it, I'm probably siding the other way as I had such an easy recovery and only took the 800mg ibuprofen, so I was driving in only a few days. I was sore but completely able to care for my boys as soon as my cath was removed in the hospital. My biggest concern, which I need to discuss with my doctor, is that I have now developed an allergy to NSAIDs and really don't want to take the narcotic pain killer in lieu of ibuprofen but I don't think I'll have many options... but one thing you mentioned, you are 100% correct, the risk of uterine rupture is very low - I'm also biased as a fellow mom of twins I know experienced this with her 3rd, and her OB NEVER explained that risk to her when she opted for the VBAC which her OB pushed for her to do... so scary (FTR mom and baby made it!).
@Assiram42 My doctor didn't seem too concerned. Basically just told me to make sure I eat small meals through out the day, carry a snack with me and drink plenty of water. Also said to sit down when I feel dizzy. Not super helpful. Hopefully your doctor can give you more insight! Hope it doesn't happen again!
@Wino0920 I have always had a problem with things like that. Discovered a trick some years ago: Strong orange scent stops the gag reflex in it's tracks. Having the jug of orange juice nearby, taking a big whiff, cleaning some, exhaling, and repeating. That has gotten me through ANYTHING gross or gag worthy that I've had to clean.
It's one of those weird, random things that works like pressing on the soft palate/ roof of your mouth to stop brain freeze.
@michaela0704 knowing someone who experienced uterine rupture firsthand would definitely sway me. Thank goodness they were okay!
It is so funny how recovery from the same procedure can be so varied. I also only took the ibuprofen, just because I was being hard headed though. I was hobbling around for two weeks, I think. I couldn't do much of anything at all without being in so much pain. Showering, changing clothes etc. was all so difficult. I can't imagine driving two days later. What a lucky duck you are.
