Yes and no.  Different juices contain different amounts of glucose.  Different breads do too. For someone that's on the cusp like I was last time, I could have accidentally passed just by picking the "right" juice and bread to eat.  And in the end you're getting the same amount of sugar. I like the scientific approach of having a precisely measured amount of glucose (but I'm also a little crazy about this stuff)

  • Ugh. I can't remember if I'm supposed to fast or not, and my 1 hour test is at 9 a.m. Monday morning. I called my doctor's office twice this morning but got the voicemail both times. I left a message, but they don't promise to return calls that day...

  • I took the test earlier today and I really didn't think the drink was that bad. I had the orange one and I made sure it was nice and cold. I was expecting it to be so much worse than it was!

  • @catem07 It's crazy how instructions vary for this test. I was told not to fast, just to avoid simple carbs and a large meal right before my appointment.
  • I just had my appointment as well. Drink wasn't bad. Like an extra sugary Hi-C drink is all. I did feel a little off towards the end of my wait time so I'm hoping that goes away soon and that it isn't an indicator of GD. Doc gave me full permission to stuff my face with anything and everything this weekend so I think I'll just focus on that ;)

  • It is so strange how greatly the instructions vary. My midwives say to fast for one hour beforehand, water is fine, and they recommend avoiding too much sugar/carbs the day of the test.

I'll be going for mine in mid-Jan. Looking forward to getting it over and done with!

  • Scheduled mine for my next appointment on Jan 9th..Fun fun. It is so interesting to see how different everyone has them! Mine is the sugary orange drink that I get first thing when I get there, I get a sonogram during my hour wait (yay!), then blood draw and see ob for quick check.
Last time I had it first thing in the morning, no fasting, just told me to eat protein beforehand. I felt miserable all day at work so I asked for the latest appointment in the day this time so I can just be done with work and go home after. She told me just to avoid sugar that day, eat plenty of protein and a well balanced lunch. My appointment will be at 3:45.

  • never seen one like this but that's a lot of food. I could never eat all that. When I eat eggs and toast it is 1 egg and 1 piece of toast and I'm STUFFED (even prepregnancy)
  • Just scheduled mine for the 7th.  Really hope that I pass

Just started my 2 hour test. The drink wasn't terrible, I was so worried it was going to be like syrupy, it wasn't. Truly did taste like flat orange soda. I think the worst part is going to be sitting here for 2 hours and not being able to have any water. I love my water and two hours without a drop is a long time

ETA update - I received my results yesterday, no GD for me.  I second anyone that has said call and double check the "rules" because the lab I went to said lots of people are being told they don't have to fast and that is not accurate for the tests that they run.  That is just specifically OSF in Peoria, IL but it'd rather be safe than sorry.

  • @Taylor72 did they say you couldn't have water?  Definitely ask if they didn't.  That was the only thing I was allowed.  And good luck!

  • @pammasu0909 all my papers and the lady taking my blood said absolutely nothing including water. Basically they are a bunch of meanies lol
  • I had my 1 hour this morning. The drink wasn't that bad, but it did take me 5 mouthfuls to get it down. My lab results usually come back pretty quickly, so hopefully I find out today or tomorrow that I passed...

  • Just to chime in on fasting/not fasting - my test is scheduled for 1/18 (prior to my next appt) and I was explicitly told I did not need to fast.  A meal with lots of protein was encouraged. If I fail this one (let's hope not) then I'm looking at a 3 hr test with 8-12 hours fasting prior.  That sounds like a recipe for hangriness!!!

  • I am going directly to the 3 hour test because my son was 10.3 pounds and they were concerned it was from GD (it wasn't, but precautions...). My OB isn't as concerned as the attending OB at my ultrasound place, so she said to skip to the 3 hour to be safe. I have to fast 12 hours beforehand. I will go for my draws at 7am to, hopefully, avoid feeling like crap. I will get it done next week.

  • I had my one hour glucose test this morning. I hadn't been that hangry in a long time! Thankfully, my OB's office let me have my appointment while I waited for the test. That was probably the fastest I've been in and out of there. Go figure.

PS my drink was clear, but fruit punch flavored and I drank it at room temp. I was so hungry, it actually tasted good and was slightly satisfying. I love sugar, though.

  • @Magheeta that's interesting!  I asked about fruit punch and I was told they only have it for 4 hours tests.

  • If I fall asleep in the waiting room during the 3 hour test is that frowned upon? My 2 hour draw is in 10 minutes. Then one more hour before my last draw. I just want to nap!

  • @ebloom3 I don't see any problem with that!

What week did you all take the glucose test?  My midwives want me to wait til after 24 weeks (Saturday for me).  But if I go Friday, my parents could watch DD.  If I wait until it's technically the right time, I have to bring her. One day won't matter, right?

I'm trying not to bug the midwives because they took this week "off" to be with their families.

  • @cafedisco I am 24w 3d. I go for a regular appointment on January 4 and my doctor wanted my blood work for the appointment. I think it's common practice to wait until 24 weeks because that's when GD can develop (unless there is a history).

  • I'm scheduling my glucose test for tomorrow morning because what better way to ring in the new year. They say after 24 weeks, I'm currently 26 weeks.  I'm nervous because twin pregnancies usually come back positive....

  • Just had my 1 hr test yesterday. I had the orange one, it didn't taste so bad at first but I struggled to finish it. Started to feel very nauseous and haven't felt like that since the first trimester. Also felt Crappy for the rest of the day.
  • I just took my 2nd 1 hour test today.  Last time I had fruit punch and seriously struggled to keep it down.  Lots of gagging and doing my best not to throw it up.  (Bad morning sickness then - I had to take it at 10 weeks due to being overweight and passed)  This time at 26+4 I tried the orange - much better but still took me the whole 5 minutes to drink it.  Not impressed with the actual blood draw though.  She dug very deep and hit a nerve.  My entire forearm and wrist burned and ached for a solid 4.5 hours.  Thankfully it doesn't hurt anymore!  I'm nervous for the results!

  • Took the test this morning, drank the orange drink chilled. It wasn't too bad, but I felt "off" and a bit sleepy for a few hours after. Awaiting the results.
  • @Nolegirl1185 congrats on passing!  That's great!

Did they really give you a time limit to drink it?  They just told me to drink it and let them know when I was done so they could start the hour timer.

  • @cafedisco yes I did really get a time limit. I suppose most people probably don't have a hard time finishing in 5 minutes, but my first time I felt so sick before I even drank it so it truly took me every second of the 5 minutes.  She asked me if I was almost done because my 5 minutes was almost up and I hardly made it half way.  The second time wasn't so bad, but I watched the clock and finished in just 5 minutes because I didn't want to chug and feel sick again.

  • During my first pregnancy my midwives suggested that the glucose test was not necessary as I was fairly young, healthy and had such bad reactions to having my blood drawn previously due to my extremely low blood pressure. My son was born a week overdue at nearly 10 lbs. So this time around my new midwives want me to get tested. I figure I just have large babies, I was a big baby myself, but I've been handling blood tests a lot better this time around & have had no fainting spells so I wouldn't think of declining. I didn't realize there was such a huge deal about the taste, I'm excited to find out what the hype is about. I feel like a first time mom all over again. I decided to do the 1hr and then the 3hr if I fail. Blood tests always make me nervous and I require a driver /babysitter as a precaution... But reading these has me feeling a bit more prepared.
  • I took the test this morning at 10 am and I didn't have to fast but I woke up late and didn't have time to eat. I drank it in less then a minute . First time I have taken it and it tasted ok just a flat orange pop taste. But man it did not sit well . I felt so nauseous and just kept burping . As soon as I got home and had some toast i felt so much better! Definitely one of the most unpleasant things I have done through out this whole pregnancy : /

I had to go for the 3 hour and it wasn't as bad as I thought. I pretty much napped in the armchair in the private waiting room between draws.

Unfortunately I failed so I have GD again. Sucks but I've been through it before and at least I didn't get diagnosed before the holidays

  • Had 1 hour non-fasting fasting glucose screening yesterday. I had the chilled orange flavor and I felt fine (also 5 min to drink it).

I should have results in a few days....hope it's fine bc I really don't want to do the 3 hour over night fasting one.

I'm told the 1 hr non fasting casts a huge net and people fail 15%-23% of time and then have to do 3 hr (which doesn't mean they'll fail it).
  • @WkoutMomtoBe I also heard many people fail the 1 hour, but don't ultimately have GD. I read that there can be up to a 50% failure rate... Good luck!
