I'm surprised to see DD's name made top 100. It was in the 200s when we picked it.

I prefer less common names, so this moved a couple of my choices lower on my personal list. I think if you personally love a name, it doesn't matter where it is. My name is very common though, and I don't want my kids to have a ton of kids with their name in class.

None of my top choices are on the list, which I'm happy about. I prefer less common names.
  • Here I go...fingers crossed are names aren't on it. I like using Baby Name Wizard's tool for names to show trends.

Sigh, just as I thought. Our boy's name is on there, about 1/3 down. I don't know if we will change it though as it's my Dad's name and we're pretty set on that, plus have a nn for it. None of our top 3 girls names are there which makes me very happy!

  • We haven't talked about names for this one yet. I do remember checking and eliminating some names from our list for DD just because they were way too popular. Nothing wrong with these names though! Mine was a top 5 for my year and I ended up in class with one or more others with the same first name quite often and I hated it. DD was 100 something and now it's close to 200.

  • Our girl name is on the list and our boy nn is on the list. Also DD's name is on the list.

Luckily we haven't run into any other little girls with her name. And the two names that we have picked for this one aren't popular in our area.
  • I grew up with no one named my name and I loved it. Adrienne so I do want a less common name for my kids. I had to compromise with ds because my husband didn't want trendy names so we went w Nicholas and we've met some older Nicholas but none his age so I've been happy . picking a name w dh was a nightmare so I'm waiting to see what we have in there to start looking again to postpone the torture
  • Our girl name and our boy name both made Top 50. For me it doesn't make a difference, I'm not too hung up on the possibility of them knowing somebody with the same name or having a classmate or 2 with the same name.

  • Really surprised to see our girl name in the top 50. Kind of disappointed but don't think it'll change my mind.
  • Wow. Our first is on there but he wasn't 4 years ago. Guess we started a trend haha. Second boys name isn't on there. But almost every name we were considering for this boy is on there. Ugh

  • DD's name was in the top 5 the year she was born. Now it's in the top quarter. She's gone to 2 larger daycare centers in her life and hasn't had another girl in the same center with her name. I do think some of it is regional. All of our proposed names landed in the top 100 this time and I won't care. If it came down to a tiebreaker, I might pick the less popular I guess.

DD1 and DD2s names are not within the top 100, which I was surprised by because both of their names are not very unique. Halle didn't even crack the top 1000! And Paige was like 116 or something.

For baby #3, our top girl name is within the Top 10 currently and our three top boy names are all within the Top 25! I don't think it will really sway our decision.

Although I did grow up as one of those kids who had to use their last initial in school and I hated it! I mean I think there were 6 other Katie's in my grade alone? But I'm JUST Katie so it annoyed me that all the Katherine and Kaitlin's got to take my name! Lol

  • It's interesting although it's not likely to completely sway our opinion. I grew up as one of at least 10 Sarah's in my graduating class. It was sometimes irritating but honestly it didnt ruin my childhood or anything
  • @h&2526pmomma, I'm JUST Katie too! I've never met another!

Yes! I did know a Kadee in college though so I guess that counts. But I think having my name used by so many as nicknames has made me anti shortening names. I'm not a fan of things like "his name is Jackson but we call him Jack". If you want to name him Jack then just go with that!

And also my MIL is natoriois for nicknames too and it drives me absolutely nuts! So anytime I think of a name I have to imagine what MIL is going to call them... for example we have a Cadin who is called Bubba, Ryker who is RyRy, Hudson is Hudsy, Halle was Halle Bear, and Paige is Paigy Pie. Seriously?! I hate nicknames lol.

2016 isn't even over yet.  Where are they getting their stats?  Usually the SSA list isn't released until May of the following year.

ETA: Actually read the article.  This is a list based on 400,000 parents who shared their names with the website.  Out of 3-4 million babies born in the US this year.  So, a small sampling.  Probably will be close to the actual results, but I wouldn't freak out over it.  I think some names on this list, like Adalyn, won't be nearly as far up when the SSA list is released.

I’m a modern man, a man for the millennium. Digital and smoke free. A diversified multi-cultural, post-modern deconstruction that is anatomically and ecologically incorrect. I’ve been up linked and downloaded, I’ve been inputted and outsourced, I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I’m a high-tech low-life. A cutting edge, state-of-the-art bi-coastal multi-tasker and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond! I’m new wave, but I’m old school and my inner child is outward bound. I’m a hot-wired, heat seeking, warm-hearted cool customer, voice activated and bio-degradable. I interface with my database, my database is in cyberspace, so I’m interactive, I’m hyperactive and from time to time I’m radioactive.

  • Our top boy name (which we've pretty much decided on) isn't on the list but all of our other top contenders are. It probably wouldn't have made a huge difference to me either way, but I'm glad that he won't share a name with a bunch of other kids in his year. I always hated having at 1-2 other girls with my name in almost every single one of my classes.
  • Our boy name is in the top 100 but that won't change our minds. Our girl name isn't in the top 100 which is nice. Our DDs name was in the top 100 a couple years ago now it's even more popular (I think in the 60s then now in the 30s)

  • I love this website- https://rhiever.github.io/name-age-calculator/index.html?Gender=M
(if the link doesn't work, just google name age calculator.)  It shows you a graph of how popular the name has been for the past 100odd years, so you can really get a good visual on how the trends of each name are going!
  • We decided to not talk names until after we know if baby is a boy or a girl. It was awful trying to find a name DH liked for DS. My top girl choice wasn't listed, but several of the boy names I like are. DS's name is on there but towards the bottom. I generally prefer the not so common names. Mine is pretty unique (which I love now but hated when I was little) and DH has a super common name. I'd like my kiddos to have something in the middle.

    BFP #4  2/28/21, EDD 11/9/21

  •   A few of mine are on the list, however getting my husband to agree on any names is so hard... I don't think the list would sway me. I also agree with the regional area thing. My current favorite name I've never heard of anyone being named that, recently I have heard of 3...
  • Both names we like are in the top 20. It won't change our choices. Our names were picked to honor family members. Also, my husband hated having a very uncommon name. For him, it's important for our kid to have a name that can be found on gift shop trinkets, which he was never able to do.
  • We try to avoid names on the list because we have an extremely common last name. Ironically, their middles names were "not popular" when they used them but they are now both on the list. Our two potential boy names are on the list. We will still use them if this one is  a boy.
  • My DD's name isn't on the list which I'm glad about but a few names I was considering for this one are on the list. For me I've always wanted to use names that wasn't common, my name is unusual and I'm yet to meet another with the same name and I liked that growing up. I'm way too fussy with names so I probably won't decide until later on in my pregnancy. It's also a lot harder this time because I need to find a name we love that goes with our daughters name which is tough.
  • Popularity definitely sways me when choosing a name. I tend to check the social security website to see the rankings of a name in prior years. I prefer to be outside of the top 100, but definitely outside of the top 50.

  • I also wish you could sort by region.  Because I'm 99% certain there  won't be a single Sophia/Sofia born in my county in 2016.  Traditional names are far from the norm here.  So picking a popular one for me would probably mean they wouldn't have another with their name in their class.

On the social security website you can see a top 100 list by state, if that would be helpful.

I don't know why but the popularity list really doesn't sway my decision. It's so hard for me to pick a name already. If we decide on a name we like, I don't really care to hear any negative opinions or if its popular or not. I have a very popular first name and in grade school it was a bit annoying but once I got older it really doesn't matter. I guess it would sway my decision more if my last name was pretty common.
  • Does Social Security show beyond the top 10? If so, I cant find it. Also the page for my state didn't work, ugh.

Yeah it shows much more then the top 10, but it appears to be failing out for me right now. Their database must be having issues. Usually you can search by name and see the trend over the last 10 years or so too.

  • pretty interesting. We happened to pick two names that aren't even on there. I'm surprised that DD's name seems to have moved up. We've only met one other baby with her name. Also, my name is now on there, but I've never met anyone with my name!
