Anatomy Scans

13»

Re: Anatomy Scans

  • I have a MFM appointment directly following my scan and an OB appointment the next day, so I'm assuming I'll get the results of the scan at one of those. The same thing happened with my last (MFM appointment immediately following the scan to review the results).  I'd say, ask at the scan, but if you don't also have an appointment with a doctor, don't get your hopes up that you'll get the all clear immediately. I don't think the techs are qualified or permitted to give results on the spot beyond the sex of the baby because they could probably tell you if something was measuring abnormally, but not what that means/could indicate medically/next steps/etc.

  • @kns1988 When I had the ultrasound in my ob office I had it one week then the next week the MD would go over the findings from the radiologist. Now is was told by the maternal fetal medicine office they will go over the findings that day before I leave the office.

We had our scan on Monday. Everything checked out healthy and normal as far as they could tell. I thought I would just be with a radiologist/technician and get the results the following week from my OB. Turns out the MFM Doctor was in there the whole time explaining every step of the way. So for those wondering who will be there, you may get a surprise. I had no idea going into it. Was a very cool experience to see everything so clearly. Thankfully, this baby is modest and we are still team green ;) No surprises there! Really just relieved that everything looks normal as far as they can tell.

  • We have our scan at OB's office and immediately after that I see my OB so I assume I get results then.

Canadian here, I don't know if that makes a difference in the procedure. The ultrasound tech isn't *supposed* to give you info on whether measurements look good or if it's team pink or blue. With my first pregnancy the tech was friendly and reassuring during the scan and said positive things like "that's a healthy baby right there" and "measurements all look good" but our doctor called the next day to tell us there was a good chance that it would be a girl. I was totally happy with that. I've heard from friends that the tech will sometimes "slip" a he or she into conversation.
  • @carter604 here in US our ultrasound technologists are usually the ones to give sex description but otherwise should not be the ones to discuss anything else. They may say theres the heart, brain and arms but usually do not remark on the findings. I know from my education as an xray tech and for working with many ultrasound techs that they are supposed to know what they are looking at/ able to diagnose so that they can do their job and get the scans the way the radiologists need them but are not supposed to reveal that knowledge to the public they are scanning. They also review the scans with the dr prior to letting patients go to make sure they did what the dr needed. That is partly why I never wanted to become an us tech because of the responsibility of needing to know so much diagnosis wise. I like taking xrays where I can say I don't have the education to read your xrays!
  • My experience is different because in my old practice the OB did the ultrasound (it was a small practice and they didn't have techs at all).  I have heard from a few different people that if anything is WRONG they usually stop and go get the doctor right away.  I know that probably doesn't ease anyone's mind who has to wait a few days to hear that everything is ok, but I have heard of several different instances in several different practices where the tech goes and gets the doctor to confirm any bad (or less than ideal) news right away.

Same here.  In NC you are not allowed to do anything after 19wks 2 days.  I can schedule mine anywhere from 18-20 weeks. That will be well past holidays since I'm not due til 5/26.

You don't technically have to drink anything before you go, they just won't ask for your normal urine sample. I did however drink OJ before I went since it make the little guy move around a bit better and they will want the baby to move so they can see everything.

@schnitz9 With a 5/26 EDD, you'd be 18 weeks on Friday, December 23rd! Maybe you can get it that day?
(I have not read ahead to see if you've updated anything.)

I have an appt next thur 12/15 for my glucose test so they will prob tell me when I can schedule then.

  • Mine isn't until 01/06, which feels so far away! I loved the anatomy scan last time- seeing all the baby's organs and such is amazing. We didn't have blood tests done this time around, but the tech was pretty certain at the NT scan that baby is a boy, but obviously that's not nearly as certain as the 20 week scan. It would hilarious if she was wrong, but we'd be happy either way so long as baby is looking healthy!

Last time, the tech told us what she was doing as she went along. We were Team Green, so she didn't comment on the sex, but she would have if we'd wanted to know. At the end, she said everything looked great, but that the doctor would review and call, which she did later that day. This time, I have an appointment directly afterwards, so I'm not sure how it'll go.
