Middle of the Night Musings

Re: Middle of the Night Musings

  • @sandnstarsnj at least that's a fairly easy illness to have. I remember when my DD got it and aside from the fever the rash part didn't seem to bother her at all. Could be worse! ;) also as long as you are BFing I'm sure DS will be fine.
Thanks... I hope so. I was always taught to fear because it's how I lost most of my hearing as an infant. The fever spikes were apparently pretty intense.

    ETA:  words
@SandNStarsNJ the same thing happened to DH as a baby. His fevers would spike so high that he'd have seizures.  Thirty years later we now know to seek medical attention for high fevers and we know methods to use to try tobkeep the feversfrom spiking. Not saying it can't happen now, but hopefully you can control any fevers your LOs do get.

Baby started sleeping for 6 hours for me the last 3 nights! He's 6 weeks old, gaining lots of weight and lots of dirty diapers. I've never felt more refreshed!
@atcwag I agree not to push a baby too much to sleep deprivation but I've found that with a little coaxing his "awake/alert" time is in the evenings! I will be honest, if he starts getting really sleepy around 1030 I'll take that time to wake him slowly then go change his diaper and feed him until he falls to sleep. But that is partially to get him to wait longer to go to sleep and partially to make sure he's going to sleep with a clean diaper and full belly.
I found it really helped with teaching him night/day and some of these issues others are having with the 30-35 min sleep stretches.
Plus the way I see it is I'm not much help to baby if I'm that exhausted. If he's not crying etc then I'm not pushing too hard
just wanted to explain a little - promise I'm not cruel hahah! :)
  • By no means am I pushing him beyond his limits or really overstimulating him at all. His eyes actually stay shut and I just tickle his toes every so often to prevent a really deep sleep before "bed time".

And now that I really think about it, he has very little really awake time. This kid sleeps A LOT. But I guess they're supposed to.

Random vent. We had newborn pix last Monday (they were delayed a few days bc of her family emergency, no biggie). She said I could have a few pix quick for Christmas cards, contacted her to find out when and she said end of week. That came and went, asked Sunday and she said I'd have them today. Still nothing though the day isn't over. Starting to get pissy bc inbooked with her 2 months ago bc she said she could turn around a few pix quickly. Now it's less than 2 weeks before Christmas and I still am waiting

edit: got the pix finally and they're not even that good. It's like she didn't do any editing. Sigh. At least there's 2 for a card
  • Hubby is taking the first 2 night feeds and I am taking the rest, Nora is not up yet, and it's been about 5 hours since I pumped or nursed her last. So here I am, both of them are asleep and I am pumping bc I'm worried about keeping my supply up.

Is is anyone else breastfeeding but pumping a few bottles a day to let hubby take a night feeding or two so you can get more sleep? How are you timing it?

  • @megz1902 I'm trying to do that too except I am not waking up for it. I've been trying to pump during the day in between two nursing times. My baby BFs every 3-3.5 hours so after an hour or so of having BF'd I pump both sides. I only get about two ounces though so I have to do it twice to get 1 bottle for DH for the evening (so he only does one night feed IF I even get around to pumping)

  • @Megz1902 I pump at 9 while my husband gives him a bottle for bed, I  nurse between 1-3am and then pump at 5-6am while my husband gives him a bottle. I don't get a lot (like 2oz) at the evening pump but I use it sometimes for the night nursing session if he falls asleep. I pump way more in the morning though! Sometimes I think I should pump after I nurse in the middle of the night but I'm just so tired!

Anyone know of some sort of bag you microwave wnd can set on baby so they think they are snuggled up to you? The residents at my OB office mentioned it but I can't  find it online.

Weve reached desperation mode. He won't  sleep when put down at night and we use drugs to get maybe an hour out of the swing or rock n play but we can't even get 10 min day or night. My mom is here and we keep trying to put him down for naps and he instantly wakes up out of dead sleep. Save me

Edit: omg just read my post we don't use drugs!! Stupid autocorrect. It shouldsay "we used to get an hour". SHeesh
  • @kvruns try this.... https://www.nurturedbydesign.com/en/thezaky/parents-healthy.php

i havent but sounds like what you are looking for maybe?
  • I'm sorry @kvruns. I hope it gets better soon.

Slight vent: our DD survived roseola last week and DS appears to have been saved, however, DD has now come home with the neurovirus so that's just great.

  • @SandNStarsNJ we were like that last week! Some nights every two hours and some nights a 5 hour stretch. I'm trying to note what happens during the day or evening that causes this but am not finding anything! The 2hr nights are getting old though.

  • Was wondering why DD kept waking up every 45 mins tonight, then realized the damn sleep sheep timer only goes for 45 mins, and the absence of noise was waking her up. Definitely getting myself a white noise machine that does NOT turn off. Night.ruined.

  • Ugh! We used to run fans or even a humidifier in our kids rooms for white noise. Best ever!
  • Glad you at least solved it @prettypalomino.

I'm nursing an almost back to sleep baby and fairly certain I smell poop. Last time this happened and I changed him, he was up for hours. I'm so tempted to leave it right now... decisions, decisions.

    What did you decide?

also did you just recently smell the poop? We never noticed a smell until a poosplosion this weekend and noticed it reeked. Before that diapers hadn't smelled
  • @kvruns I noticed it after a poop-splosion the other night. It has this oddly floral aroma. And, shamefully, I chose to wait until this feeding to change it. Flame me if you must; I am a very tired lady.

We've had poop progress though. He's only been having blowouts once a week as bowel movements but all day he's had little sprinklings of poop instead. We might have turned the corner on immature digestive tracts!

  • Ugh I hate the pooping when they are already falling back asleep it's the worst! Good news is eventually they stop pooing at night and with DD I stopped changing her middle of the night once that happened.
  • Anybody catch themselves doing weird stuff while half asleep? I just woke myself trying to unswaddle a pillow that I thought was the baby and last night I found unsent texts in gibberish.

  • Not me but my husband gets real out of it when he is super tired. Our DD came into our room one night to tell us she needed to use the bathroom and DH just pulled her into bed and was like "tell me all about it". I had to push him and be like dude she needs to go potty get it together man. Anther time I caught him peeing in the shower (no shower running) I guess he couldn't find the toilet??? Ha ha. I also found him asleep in the hallway once. He is so weird.
  • I'm going to lose my mind tonight. DH is snoring SOO loud. Like to the point I can't sleep. I tried to get him on his side and he got mad at me. He did it. And the snoring didn't stop. Make matters better every time I manage to fall asleep despite the snoring the baby wakes up. then I deal with snoring and baby all over again.
i can't take it tonight. I have the flu and I just want to sleeeepppppp.
  • Do babies pee in anger? I put him down dead asleep in his crib so I could go pee and in the time it took me to get a granola bar and go to the bathroom he was screaming bloody murder and had broken out of his swaddle. I picked him up and the crib sheet was wet. I guess in his rage he broke out and had s super pee?

Going to to be another night up all night. I swear I'm not going to survive much longer with a child who can't be put down to sleep. You either have him cry all night or get 30 min cat naps or you hold him all night and pray nothing bad happens.
  • That stinks @kristah2. I hop you feel better soon!

@kvruns A friend of mine had a LO who never slept and constantly cried and it turned out he had such sensitive bowels and digestive tract that it required prescription formula. The formulas did the trick in the long run. I would be super candid with the pediatrician about LO's sleeping habits and crying - maybe they'll have a few tricks to suggest. Anyway, I hope it improves soon for you!

  • @kristah2 this happens alll the time. Ahhh! Soooo frustrating!!! The other night it was finally 4:00 and I woke him up( for the millionth time) and told him I'm going to the guest room and he can get up with the babe and give him a bottle. Best 2 hours of sleep ever!

  • So H loaded a book on sleep training. While I'm glad he's trying to help this is some strict sounding program that basically says you cannot pick them up no matter what if crying. I'm ok to try to soothe without picking up (I try that now) but I told him patting this pissed off kid for 3 hours will not work. Baby is too young for that much crying  I'm sure he will say he will
Just do nighttime bc I will pick up but this is the same guy who can't have the baby cry for 5 min before he pops a fuse and can't be around the baby safely. He says he will just wear headphones.

I can't convince him that this book needs more flexibility and he just says that nothing is working now so obviously I don't know what I'm talking about. We haven't really tried much routine or training bc the baby refuses to be alone so you eventually give in and do whatever it takes for him to sleep.
  • Baby has been asleep almost 2 hours in the crib for th first time ever. And my paranoid ass got scared something was wrong so I turned down the white noise machine so I could hear him breathe and he instantly started stirring but no crying yet.  I'm an idiot I know.
  • @kvruns I never sleep trained my toddler (he didn't sleep through the night and we co-slept from 6 months on because he was so hard to put into his crib). Just a bit of background to say I know sleeping can suck and that I know sleep deprivation is no joke.

My only concern is that from everything I've read is that they say if you sleep train wait until baby is at least 6 months.

Not trying to cause an argument or shame you, just that if you're having feelings it's too early I say listen to your gut.

Been there! When the crying suddenly stops, sleeping goes past two hours - you name it and I've been known to check for proof of life. It was worse with the first but I still do it sometimes with #2.

  • @jmama1611 I think it is too early and he won't listen. I'm ok to try a routine bc we had none and this child absolutely doesn't sleep when put down on his own. Every time i tried some consistency the baby would scream and i would give in after about 2-3 rounds of letting him cry a few minutes.  He did sleep last night which is nice but I'm still afraid this is way too rigid. But if I make a comment he just says let the plan work he won't listen to anything. So I'm basically saying if you want this plan you do child care not me (probably a bit passive aggressive on my part but I don't care)
  • @kvruns

    Hugs mama.
My first would wake up crying any time he was laid down and not held. It's hard either way.
  • So DS nursed for 4.5 hours yesterday and it drained the life out of me but guess who just slept from 9:30-3?!

  • Anyone else dealing with baby not wanting to be put down? My baby is almost 5 weeks and refuses to sleep if she is not being held. Just curious if this is normal? I am so in love with cuddles and being there for her but momma needs some moments to herself. Maybe just a few hours of sleep that doesn't involve some awkward sleeping sitting up for me!
  • @megand495 my first was like that. Would sleep in arm and moment put down in bassinet or crib would wake up crying. Tried everything and wish I had some miracle trick to pass along.

Eventually she'll sleep out of your arms. Even if it feels like that won't happen.
  • @megand495 that is what we are going through and why my H decided we needed sleep training. I am still not 100% on board with the method because it involves crying and also too much awake time which leads to fussy baby BUT these last 2 days are the first days he had ever slept more than 30 min not being held. He's had some longer stretches of a few hours now and even had a nap or two with 0 fussing. I'd like to modify it but he won't be on board at least until we keep this for a little while

WHile I don't recommend the strict plan we are doing I do think that making a routine and sticking to it helps and then doing the put down, cry a few minutes, soothe, repeat helped. I thought for sure he would scream his head off all night but so far he's done ok. I don't love it but for this kid he needed something even if it is just keep putting down 20 times don't just stop at 2-3 tries like I Initially did.
  • So B is sleeping in His crib some which is great but I've noticed he only sleeps with his head turned over his right shoulder. Even tried putting him down at the other end of the bed and he turns the same way. Now I'm worried about flat spots and neck issues. He does tummy time and lifts his head great but if he's on his back it's always that same way. Anyone else like this?
