Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Back again - 2nd miscarriage in 8 months - Help please

Hi everyone,

I'm so sad to say that I am back again after my first miscarriage in late February. This group helped me SO much back then and I am thankful to be back in a group of such welcoming and warm hearted ladies. This is a club that no one wants to be a part of, but I am very thankful for the support.

My last miscarriage happened at 8 weeks and this one happened at 14 weeks, after hearing the heartbeat 3 times. We found out that we were going to have a baby girl and were so in love and so happy. We went to the doctor last week for a checkup and found out that she no longer had a heartbeat. To say that I am devastated is putting it lightly. I literally don't know how I am going to get through this again.

My question is has anyone else had two miscarriages with their first two pregnancies (we have no kids, both pregnancies have ended in M/C) and gone on to have a healthy baby? I am so scared that there is something wrong with me. I have no trouble getting pregnant, but I am worried that I may not be able to carry a baby to term. Any experiences, testing you had, etc would be so helpful. None of my friends have been pregnant or had miscarriages, so I have no one to talk to about this. Thanks everyone <3

Re: Back again - 2nd miscarriage in 8 months - Help please

  • So sorry for your loss.  I know there are a bunch of ladies that graduated from the ttc after loss board that had multiple miscarriages and then went on to have healthy babies.  A lot of them went to an RE and had extra testing done.  Sometimes it was as simple as taking baby aspirin.  I know this from reading the grad posts.  Hang in there.
  • Although I don't personally have experience with that I have also read lots of stories of success after multiple miscarriages...hang in there! We're in this together.

  • I'm so sorry to hear you're back.  I'm in a similar situation - Miscarriage in late February at 8 weeks, Miscarraige in early October at 20 weeks.  I've had a slew of testing done and the dr and convinced that it's just a really bad luck streak.  They are confident, based on the test results, that we'll have luck the next time around.

So while I can't give you your wish of multiple miscarriages and then a successful pregnancy (yet - fingers crossed), I hear your frustrations and I wish you good luck.

  • @rkroupa  I am so sorry to hear about your loss.  I don't have a personal experience but have heard of others who have been successful.

  • I am sorry for your losses :(
  • First I want to say how sorry I am and I know how devastating this can be. I've had 3 pregnancies all of which have ended up in losses. One at about 6 weeks, second at 22 weeks and my latest at 17 weeks. All of my experiences have been beyond painful and words could never describe what it feels like to loose your child. After my third loss I was referred to a MFM since I have no trouble conceiving, my Ob didn't think I needed an RE. I was tested for diabetes, insulin resistance, coagulopathies, autoimmune diaseases, MTFHR gene, incompetent cervix and absolutely everything came back normal, doctor concluded that there's nothing wrong with me, I've just been THAT unlucky and things that can happen to anyone, have happened to me 3 times in a row. It's been almost 7 months since my last loss and I'm currently TTC. My best advice for you would be to try and see a MFM before TTC to give yourself peace of mind but be prepared to find that everything is fine with you, feel free to talk to me anytime if you want more specific information on all the testing I had done. Hugs to you.

  • I'm sorry to hear of your losses. I'm in the same boat and share your question. First two pregnancies ended in miscarriage....first at 6wks and my current one a missed miscarriage at 12 weeks. Both have been very painful and I ended up in the hospital due to severe blood loss with the second one. Working to rebound from anemia right now. I read in my Mayo Clinic Pregnancy book that 5% of women have two consecutive miscarriages and 1% have 3 consecutive miscarriages. I read that 60-80% of women go on to carry a baby to term after 2 consecutive miscarriages. I don't know if it makes a difference if you have or have not already carried a baby to term. My doctor is going to do a few tests but we're going to try one more time before extensive testing or going to a specialist. We are planning to wait 3 to 4 cycles before TTC. I'm holding onto the old My Little Ponies and The Smooth song that there's always another rainbow somewhere. Hoping for rainbows for everyone.
  • I am so, so sorry for your loss.  I had 2 miscarriages within 7 months, both after hearing a heartbeat (the first was at 9.5 weeks, second was at 6.5 weeks).  I was beyond devastated and didn't think I would ever have a successful pregnancy.  We found out during my first pregnancy that I have an extremely rare blood condition that can manifest in pregnancy loss, but there is no way of knowing if that was the cause, in that it's not uncommon for women with a clean bill of health to have 2 consecutive miscarriages, so it could have happened regardless.  For my 3rd pregnancy, I started taking 81 mg per day of aspirin daily, but again, there is no way of knowing if that made a difference or if it was just luck.  I'm happy to report that my 3rd pregnancy was 100% perfect!

Some doctors will not refer women for further testing after 3 miscarriages, but having a miscarriage at 14 weeks after hearing a heartbeat is NOT normal, so you should be able to obtain testing now.  If your current OB won't send you for testing, talk to other doctors.  You may also be able to talk to a maternal/fetal medicine specialist for pre-conception counseling.  I didn't know this was an option until one of my good friends, who is a doctor herself, recommended it.  Again, I don't think this is always necessary after having 2 miscarriages, but I think having a miscarriage at 14 weeks warrants further examination.

It is so hard to keep trying and not lose hope.  But there are lots of women who have 2 miscarriages and go one to have a successful pregnancy.  I am one of them, and I never thought I would be.  My heart goes out to you!!
  • I am so so sorry for your losses. I know someone who's 4th pregnancy is finally progressing well after negative tests. The RE tried multiple medications including Lovenox and steroids to help, but they think it was just luck and she would have progressed without he medicine. Best of luck.
