Empty Sac

i had my first US a few days ago and they said that right now there techincally isn't a baby but everything looks great so far. They are going to do a repeat US in 2 weeks to see how things are progressing. The doc and tech said that this is super normal and that there were no concerns regarding the US. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm 6wks today.

Actually this exact thing just happened to me this morning ... only the tech said she couldn't tell me anything other then she couldn't see much without zooming in and I need to talk to my doctor ... ugh Fingers crossed but we MC last month as well so I can't imagine doing it again!

You aren't alone! Me too! This past Monday had an US and doc said she saw thickened uterine lining and we found a spot that we think MIGHT be baby but too early to tell anything. Had HCG levels done and currently sitting at 1400 and again was told "just looks like an early pregnancy" 

going in on Halloween to look again.

@neludelu it is pretty normal to not see much if you have an ultrasound prior to 6 weeks.  Even my friends that see REs and have had repeated losses aren't called in for scans until they are 6 weeks, because that is when you can really see stuff.  Prior to that it's typically just bloodwork to confirm levels.  I wouldn't worry about it just yet, your dates could just be slightly off.

My last pregnancy I went to the hospital at around 5 weeks because of bleeding and an internal ultrasound showed just a sac and nothing else. I was very worried at the time but  I now have a healthy 20 month old boy! 
Fingers crossed its just too early to see !

First of all it sounds reassuring that everything else is right on track! Most practitioners will tell you up front if they have any concerns about viability or anything like that.

Also, you may want to consider updating your thread title from "empty sack" to "empty sac." I won't share what I originally thought this post was about plus by its definition and what you are referring to, sac is a more appropriate term to use. 

FX that your sack/sac will be full of a wiggly embryo/fetus at your next US!

At 6 weeks it could definitely be too early to see anything! I was 7 weeks 2 days at my first ultrasound and while we were able to find the baby and a heartbeat, it was tough to find and I started worrying for awhile as he was searching around.

That happened to my mom with my brother... they actually had to look several times before he was where he was supposed to be. So crazy! Hopefully everything is fine.

Yep same thing happened to me yesterday. I should be about 6w2d and the u/s showed an empty sac. Going back in a week for another u/s.

Yes.... all I had was a yolk sac and they had me come back a week later and there is a tiny baby with a heart beat now. They said it's totally normal.

I know it's hard not to worry, but try not to. At 6 weeks you're right on the cusp of being able to see anything so this isn't unusual at all. If the doctor isn't worried, I would follow suit. I know it's easier said than done, though!!

I just got back home from my 1st US... I was super excited and nervous to hear the baby's heartbeat, according to my LMP I am 7w4d... my OB measured me at 5w4d, there is just an empty gestational sac right now... she doesn't seem to be worried but I had to do an HCG test today and come back Wednesday to check the levels. I am going back in 2 weeks to have another US and exam. *Fingers crossed* that this one doesn't end in a m/c like my last one :-\

So I'm confused.  How is there an empty sac if we have positive tests and symptoms? I feel like I'm not smart enough to be pregnant!

Because the embryo hasn't started to form yet.  A pregnancy test only detects hCG in the urine.  At that time there is no embryo formed, it doesn't happen until later on usually between weeks 4-8, thought some say it isn't until week 5.

We went thus morning for our 1st u/s...based on last period I would be 6w6d...however I was a week late when I finally turned a test...at ultra sound today they found an empty sac and told Us to come back 11/2 to check progress...the doctor thinks I ovulated later and am more 5 weeks than almost 7.   This is going to be the hardest 10 days.

We are in the same boat- was supposed to be 7w4d today and measured 5w4d... we are going back on the 9th for another U/S until then hoping my HCG levels in the blood tests keep rising! Good luck to you!

Hugs ladies. I just had my first u/s today and I thought based on O day I would be 7+3, but baby showed 6+4. There was a little heartbeat, but I've had a mc after hearing the heartbeat so I'm really nervous. Next ultrasound is next Monday. 

Thinking good thoughts for everybody waiting for their next appt!!

Doctor just called....she said all levels are rising..she said my hcg level was in the 4000s...they think I ovulated later than I thought...she said I have a hypothyroid and prescribes meds and said to come in next Wednesday for another so no.....but she this the empty sac was due to date mix up....please fingers crossed that Wednesday is a good day

@nalex420 Hypothyroid is pretty easy to manage, so don't worry there.  My 2nd caused my hypo and it's gotten progressively worse since then but is still very minor.  For some folks it clears up after pregnancy; for others it's a lifelong thing.  But if you have to have a lifelong condition, this is probably the best/easiest.

I will be praying for you! i also just found out I had a hypothyroid issue.

@Xath I didn't know pregnancy could cause Ht... I'll have to have my Dr check since it runs in my family!!

I had the exact same experience last week, they said I was just too early to see anything (5 weeks, 6 days).
told me to come back in 1 week which was today and got to see a baby and heart beat! 
Try not to worry too much, easier said then done I know!

I had same thing happen, kind of.  I had estimated my gestation at about 7 weeks 3 days based on LMP, but wasn't 100% sure because I don't ovulate at regular intervals so it could have been 21 days vs. 14 days.  I am a labor and delivery nurse and have connections so I had a doctor take a quick peek and he said it looked like a 6 week pregnancy, yolk sack seen but and a little embryo but no heartbeat yet, 6 weeks is really too soon to see much.  I am sure that you will see that beautiful little heartbeat on your next scan!! Uhlease13  I had the exact same thing happen when I had miscarriage 5 years ago, saw heartbeat but lost baby 2 weeks later.  The chance of that happening is less than 3%.  Scary!! My ultrasound is this Thursday, Oct. 27 and I am so nervous!!  Good luck with your ultrasound next Monday! Let us know how it goes!

Got the test results back on my HCG levels yesterday... she didn't give me the level from the 1st draw, but the 2nd was 49,285- they said it matches up for how far along the sac measured, they still want me to have another U/S on the 9th so hopefully we will get to see and hear our little nugget then!

I had the same thing happen, my uterus tips back a little bit so we couldn't find our last babe until 7-8 weeks. I'll be thinking of you that day for sure!

Thank you! It made me nervous because I pretty much had to pry them out of the nurse lol. Our 1st appointment according to my lmp I was supposed to be at 7w4d but measured 5w4d.. so the next u/S I should measure 7-8weeks with the baby visible! I'll keep y'all posted!

I also saw nothing but an empty sac at my first ultrasound yesterday and should be 7w0d according to LMP but the sac measured at 5w2d and I'm devastated. Doc said either too early or blighted ovum, but I don't see how much earlier it can be since I know my BD and OPK+ dates exactly.  I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for your 2nd scan, and mine too!

@BabyKK2017 I was devastated as well when I saw the u/s. It took everything I had not to break down and cry. Did they do any BW on you??
I was using an OPK when we conceived, and I use a Period Tracker app as well- so I knew my dates were right. The only thing that made sense to me was that I ovulated a lot later in my cycle, so that may be why the sac wasn't up to where I thought it should have been. 
Hope your 2nd one goes well! These babies will stick!

Yes they did blood work and said I would have results today so I'm dying waiting for them to call. Called them twice and they still don't have any information for me.
