Signs of Labor, Anyone?

Re: Signs of Labor, Anyone?

  • No obvious signs here at 37+2. Though I definitely feel like my body is up to something. Since Wednesday night I've been nauseated off and on, had the runs, non stop cramping with occasional BH, lower back pain. I'm still trying to work too up until the day before my c-section.

Though im thinking I may try and get out of work before that. Anyone know if FMLA will kick in if I take off unpaid before my delivery date?

  • At 38 + 3 and today is my last day of work, hallelujah! I've been uncomfortable for about a week now but last night was awful. I was in the middle of getting a manicure and painful contractions began. They lasted for 4 or 5 hours, 10 minutes apart, between 1 and 2 minutes long. I took a bath and went to bed. There didn't seem to be any progress and I feel like if it got worse, I'd wake up.

As of this morning, no contractions yet but I lost more of my mucus plug. We have date night tonight so a prenatal massage, dinner and a hotel stay. I'm trying to telepathically tell little girl to wait until tomorrow.

You would likely need your Dr to provide a note saying you need to be off work prior to delivery, that could then help start FMLA early. But remember starting it early will then mean you dont get as long after so it is something to consider. Another option, depending on how helpful your employer is, you could see about working from home or using accrued sick leave/vacation/PTO ahead of it.
  • yesterday I had period like cramps and have been super exhausted (which is outside of my normal feeling). Not sure how much of signs of labor those things are but I'm 39 weeks today so something has to give. At first I was ok with him going past due but now I really want him out and home by Thanksgiving so I hope he doesn't stay put too long.
  • My contractions were every 1.5-2.5 min last night,  lasting 45-60 sec.   This lasted 3 or 4 hours,  getting more painful as time went on.   But then they petered out by bedtime.   I had a few painful ones during the night,  but they seem totally stopped now.

  • I wish I could say all those contractions led to more than just pure exhaustion this morning. But here I am ;) sore and tired! Eventually it will happen!
  • I've been having regular comtractions since 4am. They woke me up and I haven't been able to sleep since. When I time them they're around 8mins apart lasting a minute each. They feel like painful period cramps.. So now I'm just waiting for them to get more painful & closer together!
  • Not sure it is really a labor sign but I haven't felt as much movement so I hope it means he is out of room. I've read it is normal so I'm not trying to be concerned. I did the drink oj and lay down but didn't feel much on my side tho when I moved to my back I felt some light movements and hiccups.
  • Officially 40 weeks today and little man is still cooking. Contractions that lead to nothing are so frustrating.

I would call your doctor and see what he thinks. They may want to put you on the monitor for a bit to make sure he's ok. At this point I say better safe than sorry.

My doc said if I don't feel movement do a kick count. It should be minimum 4 in 1 hr. If no kicks, drink something sweet and lie down on left side. At this point then they want 6 kicks in that second hour. I'm supposed to call L&D if this isn't happening.
  • I've been having sporadic mild cramping/contractions since this morning. I'm sure they are just Braxton hicks but hopefully a promising sign that baby will be here before Thanksgiving !

I felt more movement t after I posted and then throughout today so I didn't call. I think he was just sleeping and I was paranoid lol.
  • @kvruns Been there done that! Except I actually told my doctor and ended up with an unscheduled ultrasound and some monitoring and he was fine. Oh well!

Glad to hear LO is doing well!

Having some serious lightning crotch tonight... but I'm feeling pretty nauseous too, which is new.

Is nausea a thing in the final countdown?

I just experienced lightening crotch for the first time today. Labor better be soon cuz I don't know if I can handle it for long

Never had nausea with my other kids but when I went into labor with this LO I was nauseous the whole day before. Hope it means something for you!
  • I've been having 1 minute long, 30 minute apart contractions all day. DH is excited and I'm just aggravated because I know they could, quite possibly, mean nothing, much like the ones that were 8 minutes apart a few days ago. But because my DD was born a 39+1 (I am not at 39+3) EVERYBODY is treating me like I'm past due and asks constantly when he's getting here as though I have a clue.

  • I kinda want to say that the nesting instinct has kicked in. Although I'm not scrubbing floors on my hands and knees, I have the desire to make sure all the basic stuff is completely done. I've already done 3 loads of laundry, loaded, unloaded and re loaded the dishwasher, vacuumed the living room, cleaned the kitchen, did some art projects and sensory play with ds, and have plenty more things on my to do list. Normally doing any of these things is daunting at this point. Let's hope this is a good sign !
  • Lost my mucus plug yesterday. Having mixed emotions about that because I am scheduled for a c section due to baby being breech on Nov 24 and would like to avoid going into labour and having an emergency section. (Canadian mom here so I am not missing out on Thanksgiving). As long as baby is healthy that is all that matters.
  • Still absolutely nothing and we're now 5 days over due. Little man is going to be overcooked.

  • same here @mamabear1323 ! i m 4 days overdue and my cervix is completely closed. only having BH and maybe few crampy contractions at night but no sign of labor yet.  i have another appointment on Tue for ultrasound and nst to decide on the induction etc.
  • Good luck @desoky01! I'm nervous about an induction too but have a few more days before then.

  • So I had my membranes swept yesterday morning and nothing has been happening since. I am at 4 cm and 80% effaced. I am pretty sure I lost my mucus plug over the previous week already. I wanted to schedule an induction for 41 weeks but my doctor suggested to do it Monday at 40 weeks because of gestational diabetes, being GBS positive, and the fact that I have been walking around dilated and ready since 35 weeks. So if baby doesn't come this weekend she should be here Monday or Tuesday. I am scared of an induction.

  • Hi @m6agua! I'm scared too. It's the one thing I didn't want (and avoided with my first) but is looking like I'm in the same boat. Hope you go into labor this weekend!

  • Anybody try red raspberry tea with success? Of all people, DH wants me to go get some.

it is funny you say that because mine has been mentioning it for a few days too. Out of all of the possible "could induce labor" things that is the one he is stuck on. I hate tea and he knows it.

I've been on a cup a day + evening primrose oil, and no success yet. I'm only 39 weeks and change, so I suppose little girl isn't ready yet. I'm staying on the regimen though. I figure why not?
  • I was having pretty steady but irregular contractions for the last couple of weeks but the last few days they have gone down to pretty much nothing. Seriously discouraging.
  • Anybody try red raspberry tea with success? Of all people, DH wants me to go get some.
I used it starting at 34 weeks 2-3 cups a day, it tastes like peppermint! I was induced but I was 2.5 cm and 79% effaced at 37 weeks so I think it helped!

I've taken red raspberry pills since week 36 as recommended by the midwives. I'm not sure it helps dilate and efface (at least with me). I understood it to help strengthen your uterus in prep for labor.

Thanks! It is scary but I'm just starting to think my body just needs the help. Hope you are able to go into labor without an induction!

  • I was induced with my 2nd due to high bp. I was super scared too with all the risks medicated inductions pose. I asked if they could try breaking my water before administering any drugs and it worked very well.  It's something you can consider if the idea of pitocen scares you.

I was scared too but mine went really well!! I was gbs+ and had GD and preeclampsia. I had a foley bulb to get me from 2.5 to 4.5 then they broke my water and then started pitocin. I got an epideral about two hours later when I was 6cm and was 10 4 hours later. It's was way less stressful and traumatic then I thought and was overall a very positive experience! You've got this!!

  • I think the signs are becoming more regular!

Had some crampiness during groceries and yoga yesterday morning, and a bit in the evening. I **think** i had a bit of mucus plug last night—I couldn't tell if it was extreme discharge (ew, sorry, haha) or the beginnings of mp. When i woke up this morning, I felt a trinkle and thought "this is it!!" but it stopped? It didn't smell like urine. Again, maybe more discharge? Gah! FTM problems, i suppose.

    39 weeks today—it's getting surreal. :D
