Body rash-entire body, no fever

edited October 2016 in September 2015 Moms
I know there are some on here with medical knowledge. I'm freaking out a bit because my daughter has little red bumps over her whole body.  Very small like a pen tip. Maybe raised just a little.  Not itchy. She maybe is acting a little more crabby and tired but there is no fever. She had her 1 year vaccines two days ago including the MMR but the doctor said he doesn't think the rash is related because it takes a week for a rash from that to occur and it's very rare.  What could it be then? It's her whole body. No changes in food or detergents etc.  I have been googling which I know is a bad idea.  The doctor says wait it out and only be concerned if there's a fever but I can't help but be concerned.  Thank you!

  • Hmm, no idea about the rash. That description isn't consistent with any major skin condition I can think of. This probably doesn't help much, but sometimes kids are sensitive to the strangest things. My oldest has sensitive skin and will sometimes get strange rashes that are
gone within a day or two. She also has a hyper
response to mosquito bites and will get a half-dollar size welt around the bite.

Is the rash really everywhere? Scalp? Inside mouth? Will the pediatrician consent to use of Benadryl to help the reaction?

  • My LO had something similar- started on her face and belly, spread everywhere, no other symptoms. It cleared up on its own in about ten days and our pediatrician wasn't concerned- probably some random virus. Definitely call if you are worried though!
  • Just like pp, my daughter had a rash with little red bumps that spread all over her body and the doctor said it was just a virus that would go away on its own. She had it for a few days and then it was gone. Some kids at her daycare had it as well so I'm assuming they got it from one another.. didn't bother her, just looked bad.
  • Thank you! It's good to know it could just be a virus. The bumps are lighter today. She has seemed more irritable but she is also reaching in the back of her mouth so I think she might be teething.  @jht4-The inside of her mouth didn't appear to be any different. I don't think the rash is in there and on her face it is very light and only in some spots.  I don't see it on her scalp. Still no fever.  Maybe not eating as well but she is still on formula because she had a bad reaction to milk.  She's drinking that fine.  Thanks again.
  • It sounds like a reaction to the MMR vaccine. Especially since it happened right after vaccines, I definitely wouldn't push that aside. They can do tests to confirm measles or mumps, I would ask my doctor to test.
  • My daughter had this along with a rash in her mouth. Went to the doctor and it was confirmed as hand foot and mouth. Gave us some medicine for the itching and soft food but otherwise wait for it to run its course.
  • The bumps are almost gone. Still no fever and has been eating normally.
  • My LO has Roseola! I'm just finding out since the rash just appeared! Several days of 103-100 temp. Then he seems fine with no fever, and a small rash last night is now a massive rash today. I thought he was teething. Thank goodness we weren't around any other littles while he had a fever. We had plans but I canceled them!
  • Ugh. I'm so tired of hearin from doctors "it's not related to the vaccine". Ok, Sure. I honestly wonder if they are legally bound not to say that.  I'd check for measles, mumps or rubella.
  • Sounds like the same virus my daughter had a few months ago. They said it was a virus but like 6 kids at day care had it at the same time. It cleared up in a few days.
  • My daughter had a very similar reaction about 36 hours after getting her 1 year vaccines! A red rash all over her body, no fever, not itchy, no eating or sleeping issues.. cleared up within 2 days. Her pediatrician was reluctant to say it was a reaction to the MMR vaccine but I beg to differ.
