Avery

Boy or girl? I think it's all boy and I love it for baby #2.  My husband thinks it's a girl's name.  Curious about public opinion on this. Do you know any Averys? Thanks!

I think it could go either way, but my initial instinct says girl.

I know that Avery is used on girls now.....but if you just step back from that and say the name out loud , it sounds all boy to me

    I wasn't aware it is a boy's name.

I love it on a boy. But since it's the Ashley of 2009-2016 I'm just so tired of it

Both, but I think it sounds better for a girl.

Historically it is a boy's name but it's super trendy on girls right now. I'd probably just avoid using it TBH.

I think girl even though I know traditionally it's a boys name

    Hard pass.

It's all boy to me, and was on my boy short list FOREVER, but now it's a ridiculous trendy mess on girls. I know of at least 6 under 3 (with spellings Avery, Averie, Averigh).

Disappointing! I was afraid this was the case but wasn't sure since there aren't a lot of babies in my circle of friends yet. Glad I asked.

    This so much.

It originated as a boy's name, but is increasingly being used on girls.  Because the trend seems to be away from boy and toward girl, you might get some side-eyes from people who don't realize the name's background.

Think hard about the conversations you will have with your son at age 6 or 7 about this when the other Avery in his class is a girl.  If you're okay with that, and you feel confident in your ability to navigate those conversations, then consider trying to convince your H.  Otherwise, it's probably not worth it.

^agreed. Not worth it when there's plenty of other great boy names. Thanks for the input!

I LOVE Avery for a boy, it's one of our top choices.  That being said, I definitely know more girl Avery's than boys.

We had Avery picked out as a middle name for a boy (not using it this go-round since our LO is a girl!) but I do agree it seems to be trending more girl than boy these days.  I personally know two people with little Avery's, one is a boy and one is a girl (spelled Averie.)  I prefer it as a boy name but probably wouldn't use it as a first name since it's so common now.

Avery is very ten years ago, people have moved on to Aubrey and Addison now (funny enough, all were originally boy names). I'd assume your son was a girl.
