I brought my baby with me but my husband came with me to my appointment. I also had to park in a garage at the office building next door (there is no parking at my doctors office). I just carried the car seat because it was the least cumbersome option for me. My son got really fussy when we got to the appointment so I fed him. It was nice because my doctor was able to check his latch and my position while breastfeeding and offered some tip on things I could be doing a little better.
@Sbrown721 I just found a rhythm that seems to work for me. I breastfeed during the day. After the last feed and LO is off to bed, I will wait and pump an extra time before I go to bed. This will give me a bottle to have for the next feed during the night. After that feed and LO is back to sleep I will pump again. It seems to be when I get he biggest yield as it is usually early morning and there has been an extended time since the last pump. It also leaves enough time before she wakes up again to be able to breastfeed.
Now my LO is 7 weeks and has been sleeping roughly 6 hrs at night so this really helps. Not saying this will work for you but thought I would share just in case. My LO always feeds from both sides so I could never do the pump one side, feed from the other routine.
@rawarr I have not had it but a good friend just got over it and said it felt just like having the flu. I would say go see your doctor before you start feeling worse.
@Sbrown721 I had a LC appt yesterday and was given the go ahead to start pumping. My schedule she gave me is to feed Molly at 7am ish (I let her eat from both breasts) after that I pump for 10-15 minutes for my stash. Sometime between 12-2 I feed her again from both sides and then pump 10-15 minutes for my stash. Then at 6ish I pump and put that in a bottle for DH to feed her immediately. Gets her used to a bottle and gets my pump routine started. Plus DH has a chance to feed her. She cries when he holds her because she always wants the boob and he takes it a little personally. So this is nice for him. I've got 5oz already for my stash. Good start I think considering she fed before both pump sessions!
I may kill my SO. You know the saying never wake a sleeping baby, well he inadvertently did. He has multiple alarms on his phone because certain days of the week he goes in later than others. Well he had one for an appointment that he had on repeat for some odd reason and it woke Xavier up. He had only been down for an hour and a half meaning I was only asleep for maybe an hour. Ugh I will kill him in my thoughts. He is lucky I love him.
Only 2-3 times per week. The hospital suggested that to us. She doesn't get too dirty yet and they said that their skin is sensitive and it's not necessary. If she has a bad poosplosion or something then definitely!
Every three days. Sounds weird but I do it the days I wash my hair so that I remember when he needs a bath. I shower every day but it wash my hair every three days because it gets oily if I do it too often.
I took the newborn and threenager to my parents. We survived the almost 4hr flight and so far it's been going ok. I left my oldest home with daddy so she wouldn't miss school, slightly jealous of his 1 child time Hitting up a pumpkin patch tomorrow since those are pretty pathetic in the southwest, trying to soak up some Midwest fall weather. Fingers crossed children cooperate!
Did baby start sleeping more for you once 6 weeks hit? Right now he's up every 2 hours for an hour...I keep reading around 6 weeks that will get better.
@sbrown721 My little guy is 6 weeks and he does have one stretch that is 4-5 hrs. He recently went through a growth spurt and was eating a lot more. I think weight gain and eating more at night has helped with sleep. Also, I think he finally knows the difference between day and night, so the amount of time it takes us to get him down has decreased.
Has any one's LO had issues with rashes? Not meaning diaper rash. I'm meaning rashes on face, neck, and in hair (not cradle cap). Doesn't seem to bother him but is a little worrisome for me. I know there is newborn rash and acne but my niece had eczema so not sure if it is that. FTM here and just not sure. Also has anyone's little one experienced bowel changes. As in was going couple times a day and now will go a day or two without going and then will have one maybe two poopy diapers and then go another couple days without pooping?
@jenkar01 we were dealing with a rash on the neck. I'm starting to think it's related to soap. Every time she gets a bath with soap, her neck is red and rashy again. On days with water only bath her neck is ok. When she had a rash look on her face the pediatrician said it's common to get a baby eczema type thing. I forget the exact name but the rash felt like candle wax. She had me put aquaphor on it and it only lasted a few days. The bowel changes for us are more of a strain/pushing but still same amount and type of diapers.
My mom mentioned aquaphor to me as well. We got some last night so I'll start applying it today. He doesn't seem uncomfortable with the pooping. Still passing gas, abdomen isn't hard or distended, just less frequent poos. We see pediatrician next Tuesday so I'll bring it up then if still an issue.
@jenkar01 we are dealing with what we think is baby acne on his face/neck. Doesn't seem to bother him, but we will ask about it in 2 weeks at our 2 month appointment. I do remember last time we were in that our pediatrician mentioned that as his digestive system matures there will be changes in poop color and frequency. Anything from several times a day to once every couple days can be normal.
@jenkar01 When we saw our pediatrician for his 1 week appointment we asked him about bowel movements becaus our LO was only going once a day or less and he said it's very normal for breastfed babies to go longer without having a bowel movement he said unless it went past 5 days he wouldn't be worried that as long as he was having enough wet diapers it was fine
Thank you ladies so very much. I honestly don't know what I would do without you guys. I am very type A personality and hate not knowing all the answers or having it all under control. It is nice to know I can always come here for answers.
To agree with everyone else, the frequency of bm's for breast fed babies can vary greatly and should become less frequent as they get older. I freak out about every little bumb on Ellie. Google images comes in handy for that. I don't think I've ever used my Google search on my phone as much as I have the last month!
I hear you on googling every thing. From what I've seen in pics it looks like either newborn rash or eczema. I applied some aquaphor and seems to be helping. Also noticed yesterday it got worse when my SO was holding him in the carrier while grocery shopping. SO is a heat box and he hadn't been washing his clothing in dreft so think the rash was a bit worse due to being overheated and irritation from laundry detergent. We shall see though. Only time will tell.
@jenkar01 my 6 week old has baby acne on his face and neck...pediatrician said it's totally normally and will go away. Just wash with water and don't pick at it. But also my husband likes to have the baby sleep on his chest and they are both hot boxes so the other day he got like a heat rash that made the baby acne look way worse. It's calming down now thankfully.
I've had alcohol. At first I had a few sips of beer from the SO and since I've had a couple myself. But I've only had one beer at a time and right after I fed her. Nothing besides beer.
@Sbrown721 I have had a few beers since giving birth. I have had 1 right after I got done feeding my little guy that way I knew I had some time before I had to feed him again. We did have my sister in laws wedding this passed weekend and I drank more than one. We just fed our guy pumped milk and then I bought test strips to test my milk for alcohol for after the wedding
I could really use a beer now! We're on a road trip to visit big brother and sisters at school for Family Weekend. It's a 10h drive and learned my lesson last time - split the road trip up!
I have had a beer a couple of times. The first time was only half because I started to feel a little tipsy. Each time it's right after I feed and make sure I eat something. Gives me about 3-4 hours to get out of my systems before LO wants to nurse again
I've had alcohol. It's been wine every time. My first glass was when my LO was a week old and I couldn't stob sobbing that he was growing up too fast. The wine definitely helped me relax and calm down a bit. Since then I have have had about a glass or two of wine each week. We even took the baby up to wine country to go wine tasting when he was about 3 weeks old.
When I drink, I try to either breastfeed or pump at the same time. Then I can be sure no alcohol is getting passed to baby.
Thanks for the answers regarding alcohol. I have had wine/beer here and there, but I feel guilty every time even tho I am following the proper guidelines. It's tough bc he loves to comfort nurse even after I give him a bottle. He's not drinking much milk just wants to be on the boob.
I have one dark beer each night, to boost my supply. I'm not sure it's working, but it certainly is delicious!
Fun, random question: What is the most ridiculous thing you have done for/with your baby? I really want Olivia to play the cello when she is older, so I've started playing YouTube videos of Yo Yo Ma on my phone while I play with her in the morning. It seems to be growing on her, haha.
I've had a glass of wine a couple of times and a whiskey with cider. We watch TWD on Sundays and I always have at least one whiskey and cider. I'm not going to not enjoy a glass here and there just because I'm breastfeeding. Besides midwife and mother, who is a midwife, said that as long as I'm not getting drunk to go ahead and enjoy myself.
@jenkar01 agreed! Many women quit breastfeeding bc of all the demands of it. Giving up alcohol isn't necessary. I have read that if you're sober enough to drive you're sober enough to breastfeed.
@skirtandsandals DH has played guitar for baby and I just started playing baby Einstein on pandora. He loves it...I think!
@skirtandsandals hilarious coincidence- I am determined Victoria is going to be a famous pianist
ETA post cut in half. Seriously hope she does want to play. She has lovely long fingers! And I play Lang Lang all the time along w classical piano on Pandora
The strangest thing I've done is used the windi . have you guys seen those things? it's from the makers of the nose Frieda. it's this little tube thing you insert in tthe babies rectum. I've used it a few times. it let's out gas and then poop comes out too. from reviews people say it can get messy but I haven't had that experience. Yet.
@molosmiles our pediatrician told us about the Windi. We thought it would be a good purchase to have on hand just in case. We haven't had to use it yet, but I'm glad we have it at home.

Just curious,
How often is everyone bathing their little one?
