Boy's name inspired by NN

i love the NN Dex, but don't want that to be our son's full name. I want it to be just that a possible NN.

Love the name Dexter... However, my hubby & I just binged watched the Dexter series on Netflix and therefore the name has been ruined. Would this bother anyone else??? (For those who haven't watched Dexter, the main character is Dexter and he is a sociopathic, vigilante serial killer)

Looking for other names that Dex can be a NN for...

So far my list includes, Declan (kinda preppy for my liking), Maddox, & Dekker (or Decker--- not sure which would be a familiar spelling)... I like Dekker, but can't find much info on it! Anyone have a Dekker or can share some insight?! I like different names, but not off the wall crazy! My DD is Emery Claire. Son's MN will be Reid.

Not a fan of Decker, especially with a kk...I think Dexter is a cute name but I also don't watch the tv show.. Declan is a sweet name and Maddox is ok but not generally my style.. I did search for other names to offer you but didn't really find anything.. good luck with your choice!

I did watch Dexter and will admit that I do think of the show initially. I don't think it ruins the name though, unless it's all that YOU can think of! Personally, I think it's an awesome name. As long as the mn is not Morgan

I like Declan. It's my nephew's name, and he can go by Dex or Dax. I also like Decker/Dekker. As for Dexter, it's not likely that our children would get the reference, and there are plenty of Jason's and Michael's born in the 80's after the horror films of the late 70's, so I think you'd still be ok if you chose to use it.

I think Dexter is the best option from your list.  I agree with PP, our kids won't know who Dexter is.

I think of the cartoon first, Dexter is not super common, but the serial killer is not the only pop culture reference.  

I like Dexter best of your options. 

Decker is kinda weird,  cause I think OG deck like a punch, so it sounds like deck her. Which is more problematic than a fictional serial killer imo.

I think Dexter is probably hte best option but I would be put off by the show references I would get all the time.

Some of these are a stretch but technically you can name your baby whatever you want and call them whatever you want haha! You could name him Fred and call him Dex. Actually Fredrick would probably work too haha!

I want to like Decker, but I think it really doesn't work with mn Reid (sounds like decorate, or hickory dickory dock...)

My favorite from your list is Declan, followed by Dexter.

I really like Dex/ter and thought about it for our LO for a bit but crossed it off the list due to the show. However, my husband and I had just finished watching it on Netflix so it was fresh in our minds. Now I think it's not a big deal and will continue to not be a big deal as time passes. I definitely do not like Decker/Dekker. Declan might be the safer choice, but it sure is trendy.

I knew someone with the last name Dekker growing up but not a first name. It's NMS but I don't think it's bad, it's just Becker with a D. I do like the Decker spelling better but I don't know why.

Our bffs named their son Dexter. I thought serial killer first, but the name has grown on me. I think it's definitely your best option.

I'd just go with Dexter and call him Dex. It was a name with its own history before the show. It is a great name. The other names seem like a bit of a stretch for NN Dex IMO.

Dexter is the only one that makes sense for nn Dex IMO.

I think Dexter is your best option. I do think of the show (I watched the entire thing while it was airing), but I thought of the cartoon first. Dexter's Lab was great!

Also echoing PPs opinion that Decker sounds like 'deck her' and I think that's more problematic than a potential pop culture reference.

I did watch Dexter (amazing show) and personally it wouldn't ruin the name for me. I don't like Decker at all.

I love the name Dexter! I don't think of the show immediately but have watched it.  My cat's name is Dexter I don't think that's a negative against the name though, because I like giving my animals people names!
