I have been enjoying this name lately. It's masculine and classic, all while not being mainstream. I have read that it is pronounced lo-REN. I'm not expecting yet but might be in the future months. DS is Cart.er
This is my uncle's name and we pronounce it as one syllable.... Like Lorne Michaels or forlorn ... even though it's spelled Loren. Lauren would get a two syllable pronunciation from me but I would also think that was more feminine.
I really like it! I used to live in a big rural area. Lots of cattle ranchers. There was an older man named Loren (Lauren) and I also dated a Loren. It fit them both really well!
The Loren I knew was pretty awesome. He had to be pretty chill about his name because many people only knew the feminine Lauren (he pronounced it pretty similarly, or at least allowed us all to do so - unclear).
I personally think the name is fine, but that you will need to be prepared for a lot of correcting and explaining. While it is true that all names will probably have this issue to an extent, I think you need to be honest with yourself about the extent to which a male Loren will have to explain his name.
But it if it were me, and I truly loved the name, I would go with it anyway.
I really like Loren. I only know one, and he pronounces it LOR-in, similar to most Laurens I know. (I've only met one Lauren who pronounced it LAWR-in.)
I find the pronunciation lo-REN to be strange. I also way prefer Loren to Lorne. To me Loren sounds classic and distinguished, and Lorne sounds like a weird sound you make when you accidentally try to say two words at once.
A male Loren may have to explain his name more often than a male William, since people might expect a Lauren on sound alone, but unless you live in a particularly sexist part of the world I wouldn't expect it to come down to more than him having to spell it regularly for people.
Re: Loren as a future son name?
What about Lawrence?
