  • @kmyers228 Well then happy due date to you too! Are you going to get a sweep or wait it out?

  • Good luck @kmyers228 and @SpaceBurger !

  • Thanks @chriscasey33!

@SpaceBurger my docs haven't offered a membrane sweep but at my appt today the doc seemed to think she'll come on her own probably in the next few days and if not we'll schedule an induction for the end of next week. I feel better knowing that if she's stubborn and doesn't want to come out on her own, that at least I just have to make it another week! FX we both see our LOs soon!
  • @kmyers228 Same boat! I have an induction scheduled for next Wednesday since they won't let me go past 41 weeks anyways. Cheers to seeing our LOs very soon one way or another haha

  • @SpaceBurger Come on out baby! *does baby dance* (again.)

  • Got my membrane sweep this afternoon, check in at hospital for induction at 6am tomorrow :) who knew bad weather could work in my favor?!
  • congrats @Schell2013, @UFJen and @lindzsers!! Beautiful B&W photo lindzsers :)
  • Congrats  @Schell2013,he looks so adorable.

  • Congrats @Schell2013!

Here to report that sweep did not work. I didn't even really have contractions from it. I want to cry.
  • Congrats everyone!!

I'm sorry @SpaceBurger :( fingers crossed your time is soon!

  • I had a ton of braxton hicks last night, like every 10 mins for maybe 30 secs at a time, but I was hopeful they would turn into the real deal. Went to bed and it all went away   :(
  • @kmyers228 - same with me. I have BH all the time now but what seemed to be more intense ones last night. Really started to think that it would be the real deal, but no dice.

I feel really torn now because I have a scheduled induction at 41 weeks but my midwife made it sound like it was really early and so now I'm second guessing myself and wondering if I should just wait it out a bit longer. According to an article on the evidence based birth webpage, only half of FTM go into spontaneous labor by 40w5d (I'm 40w4d). I'm in the boat now hoping that they will call me on Sunday and tell me that L&D is too full.

WORF: I did not come here to admire the scenery.
DAX: If you say so. I guess we should just go home.
WORF: Well maybe. I would not be so hasty.
DAX: I take it the scenery has improved?
WORF: A few months ago, when I was commanding the Defiant on a scouting mission in the Gamma Quadrant, we encountered a protostar cluster, a swirling mass of colour set against a background of glowing clouds and burning sky. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen, until now.
DAX: I've got to take you on vacation more often.

@waitingforbabies Interesting statistic. I went into spontaneous labor at 40w 6d with my first son.

In a similar situation now. My OB is willing (but reluctant) to induce at 39 weeks based on my growth scan at 37, which showed he was big, and based on the fact that DS1 was 9 lbs and I struggled to push him out (with an episiotomy).

I don't want to be induced due to due to the higher risk of unnecessary C section, but, I'm also starting to freak myself out about baby's weight and head size (measured 40 weeks when I was 37).

I could be induced at 39 weeks, but maybe I'd go into labor naturally at 39.2. Or...maybe I won't until almost 41 weeks like with DS1, and then how big will baby be?!

    Such a stressful decision!

  • @waitingforbabies @F47 That is an interesting statistic. My mom thinks Baby B is going to come on Sunday. I'll be 40w6d! We shall see. She's been right about every other thing this pregnancy.

@noraaurora thanks for that. I get so caught up in the down sides of induction all the time, that it's hard to remember that people have perfectly fine deliveries with it. Even my own sister was induced (due to high BP) as a first time mom without a "favorable cervix/dilation" and delivered vaginally a very happy and healthy baby.

@MRSCORKER the struggle is REAL. I'm feeling so stressed now at the end of this pregnancy and I hate it. They did the growth scan because I was measuring small, which is hilarious. I knew baby wouldn't be small, just based on the fact that I was almost 10 pounds at birth, and my son was 9. I really didn't even want to have the scan because I knew it would cause me stress for this very reason.

Even if baby is bigger than DS1, that doesn't mean I will struggle to birth him. Second time around is typically a lot easier I read (and hear). So, all of this stress could be for nothing. But, it's not how I like spending my last few weeks of pregnancy when I'm already super busy wrapping everything up at work.

(also, FWIW, my sis-in-law had a 9.5 pound baby with a head bigger than DS1's, and she didn't even have a superficial tear. And, she's in the UK, so she didn't even have an epi). So...it CAN be done. (I think I'm just not very stretchy down there...)

  • @F47 You can do it! They can't MAKE you induce. If it's medically necessary and you have no other option, it will be obvious. If you bring up concerns and advocate for waiting and the doc seems ammendable, then it's not an emergency. I've decided to wait it out and not schedule an induction until my doc really puts her foot down which won't be until I hit 41 weeks.

  • I don't know if I count as my water had broken, but three hours after that when I literally strolled into l&d I was having no contractions, was not effaced at all, and was maybe finger tip dilated (and I feel like the nurse was being generous). All it took was one round of cytotech.

I'm both team "listen to my body" and team "do what doctor recommends" which have not conflicted so far. At the moment I'm impatient, but baby, doctor, and my body all seem to have chilled out and are content to hold tight. Le sigh.

I like the way you put this. I'm defnitely team "do what doctor recommends" because I trust my doc but I will also ask questions and assess the risks as she lays them out. I know some docs are quick to induce and many women will accept the suggestion without asking questions, which is fine if that plan works for you!

  • @waitingforbabies Thanks for posting that info! I just spent a good hour reading through the articles on Evidence Based Birth - really interesting stuff. I like how she lays it all out and doesn't speak in a lot of absolutes, just presents the facts out there.

Induction is a REALLY tough choice (if you have the choice, that is).

With my first, I HAD to be induced at 39 weeks due to pre-e, and my body just didn't respond. After 39 hours and every trick in the book, I had a c-section. This time, I'm trying for a VBAC and hoping for spontaneous labor. My practice would recommend induction at 42 weeks ... Even at that point, I'd be terrified to go through another failed induction. I've already told them I may choose a repeat c-section instead ... But I guess we have to see how things play out.
  • @waitingforbabies I was induced as a FTM at 41 weeks.  I was high and closed and in total my induction and labor was 38 hours.  I made it clear to my doctors that I really wanted to avoid a c-section.  They keep checking the baby and her heartrate was favorable, so they let my body do its thing.  The only thing I didn't like was how long I was on drugs, but everything else about it was really great.  So it definitely does depend on your experience.  I am hoping to go into labor naturally this time, but who knows.  I am totally closed and at 38 weeks.  Grr...

  • @F47 & @MRSCORKER Have you looked into Bishop's score?  I was in the same boat a couple weeks ago, trying to decide on induction or not.  My first was large, this one was measuring large also and my midwife was pretty much leaving it up to me, but didn't want to go past 41 weeks.  I ended up having him at 39 weeks 9lb13oz, but I was planning a membrane sweep at my 39 week appointment and if that didn't work I was thinking about scheduling an induction a few days past my due date if I had a good bishop's score.  It's a tough choice though, especially when there's a potentially big baby coming.  Good luck, hopefully your body makes the decision for you!

  • @mommathoner wow they will let you go to 42 weeks with a VBAC and induce? My OB was very pro VBAC before I we found out I have complete prévia but she said they would not induce or let me go past my due date! I'm not really sure on the logic behind it though.
  • @serenaxo84 Yes. This is a very pro-VBAC practice. There's some good research proving it's safe to wait that long in *most* cases ... I would give links but I am on my phone. I will definitely be closely monitored after 40 weeks, so I would feel comfortable waiting to let labor start.

  • @mommathoner - yes, isn't it a great website? It doesn't seem very biased but just gives you the straight facts.

+1 about Sookie. I just found the episode on netflix- how does any pregnant woman that far along bounce up and down like that though, lol!

    good luck @christinab0722 !!

Just like how every woman seems to break her water without contractions? >.< Premature rupture of membranes actually only happens in like 10% of cases!!

  • +1 for an induction that was not that bad. It took a long time, but I was really only in labor for 3.5 hours once it finally worked.
  • @waitingforbabies totally! Or nobody on TV ever really has a C section? I also happened to watch the episode of the Office where Pam has a baby today. It was comforting how clueless of parents they were , made me feel better :)
