Being admitted at 24 weeks/scared out of my mind

Im due with my first baby December 31st and will be 24 weeks at the end of this week. At 20 weeks I was told I have a funneling cervix and was told to take it easy and I started vaginal progesterone. Last week I was seen again and have only .6cm that is closed. I will be admitted on Wednesday and will start steroid shots to help with development in case of an early delivery. I'm so scared. I'm afraid I will make it so far and still not get a baby or my baby will have tons of medical problems. I can't even get myself to set up a nursery yet for fear I will jinx us. Anyone have any preemie experience? I'm trying hard to stay positive but when they give you all the scary statistics about early babies it's hard.

  • I have no premie experience, but you should ask if they can or will do a cerclage. It is a stitch to hold the cervix from effacing or funneling anymore. I had one put in about 2 months ago, when my cervix went from a .9 to a .6 in 2 days. So far modified bedrest and the vaginal progesterone have let us get from 21 weeks to 28 weeks. It sucks, and is really hard, but you can do it. The doctors know how to help the best, and as long as you aren't dilating they can most likely keep baby cooking for a while.

  • I dont have any experience with preemies, but have been doing a lot of googling lately. I've been on bed rest at home for almost two weeks for shortening cervix and funneling also. I was not able to get a cerclage, but they started me on progesterone every night. My doctor is hoping I make it to 32 weeks. Yes, the statistics are scary but there is a lot the doctors can do to help you stay pregnant and help your baby when they get here. Bed rest is tough but you can do it! Thinking of you!!

  • We were hoping a cerclage would be possible but the both hospitals we have been seen at (we live in a small town so now we are traveling 45 minutes to one of the largest hospitals in the state) and both doctors we have seen are afraid that putting a cerclage in now would actually stimulate the area and put me into labor.

You haven't been referred to a Maternal Fetal Medicine Doctor? That is who did my cerclage, and they had me stay in the hospital for 24 hrs before and 48 hrs after to make sure there were no contractions.

That was what my ob said and a maternal fetal medicine doctor. All my appointments are now with the maternal fetal medicine Doctor
  • I don't have any advice/experience but I hope all goes well.  I have a friend who had her son at 25 weeks and he's 18 months now and doing very well.

  • It sounds like you're being well cared for. I didnt think they did cerclages after 24 weeks so you may just be too far along.

Try not to stress about what isn't done, just take one day at a time! I'll be thinking of you both.
  • Hoping all goes well. I imagine you will have a lot of love and support coming from everyone on this board no matter what happens.

No personal experience, but have friends who had premie babies. They babies all and wit and are now 9 and 6 yrs old, doing fine. The longer you can keep the baby in, the better their chances are.
I'm sending good thoughts your way, hoping for the best. Take good care of yourself and the babe.

  • I was lurking on the November 2016 board and someone just had their baby premature! Maybe you could check it out for some reassurance! Hope everything starts looking up!
  • Thinking of you. I don't have any experience either but NICU advances have made it possible to take care of premies that young. Take it one breath at a time and take it easy. You are in good hands with the doctors and nurses at the hospital. Prayers send your way that baby stays cooking in there for several more weeks!

  • Thinking of you. My first was a 28 weeker born at 1lb 15oz. We spent 4 months in the NICU and left with many specialists but today he is a healthy, happy, active 4 yr old with minimal problems (asthma and kidney reflux) and intellectually he is right on par with other 4 yr olds. I know it'S terrifying and overwhelming but know those nurses and doctors are angels. Just amazing.  Please keep us updated.

  • Thoughts and prayers to you.  My cousin had both of her babies early, 25 and 27 weeks (due to pre-eclampsia, not her cervix) and they are 1 and 3 now and both are healthy happy children. I hope your story is the same or better!

Signed paperwork for a c-section that will be valid for the next 30 days since baby is currently breech. That way if anything happens we are good to go. Still hoping to hold on for awhile but we will have to see what my body decides to do.
With you LO being so small, if your doc has any experience you should be able to deliver vaginally even if LO is breech. They can also do inversions from the outside that should make it so you don't have a CS.

  • @Kate08Young I've read that they normally don't do versions until a baby has reached a certain size as well as near complete lung development.  You've seen different I'm guessing?
