Baby Names

How do you all feel...

about using a diminutive name to celebrate a loved one? Would you considering it still honoring them if it is not the exact same? I am not sure where I stand on the subject.

My grandma was Marguerite but I feel like it doesn't sound right since there really isn't any French connection in my family. I am leaning towards Margaret but am unsure if it's really still celebrating my grandma.

Just curious on your honest opinions :D

Re: How do you all feel...

  • I think it can still be a nice tribute. I've read about people wanting to honor an opposite gender friend/relative and finding a similar name to use (like Daniel/Danielle), and it still works.

    I LOVE Margaret btw...great choice!

  • I think Margaret still 100% honors your grandmother.

My grandmother was actually christened Marguerite but went by Margaret most of her adult life. I've always thought I'd name a girl Margaret, but my DH isn't a huge fan. It's also coincidentally my SIL's name, meaning she and the baby would have the same name. I'm kind of on the fence about that.

We have an Irish last name and a lot more Irish on both sides of the family so now we're thinking Mairead, which is the Gaelic version of Margaret. And if so I will definitely tell my daughter she was named for her great grandmother :)
  • love marguerite! so many margarets

  • thank you ladies!

@magsugar13 it's not that I don't like Marguerite it's just that some names it doesn't pair well with that I like, so I am feeling out how Margaret receives as far as honoring my grandma goes :)

I hear ya, but marguerite is special and margaret is common
  • I think it definitely still honors her. Our son's middle name will be Padraic.. to honor both my grandfather and father whose middle names are Patrick. I wanted him to have his own special twist but still linked to my favorite men. It's a great way to honor a loved one without having to have the exact same name. Some people even just use the same initials or first letter of a name.
  • I am considering something similar. Btw I love both names.

Grandma was Francis, nn Fran, Franny. I want to do Francesca to honor her and nn her Franny. Because I think it's cute.

  • My mother in law passed away almost a year before my daughter was born so we wanted to honor her somehow. Her middle name was Lynn and we named our daughter Addilyn.
  • Margaret absolutely still honors Marguerite. Marguerite is the French variant of Margaret. There's absolutely a connection there.
  • I love Margaret as is, but if you're worried about it being common, there are also tons of nickname options.
  • Thank you everyone!
  • I think it's a great idea. I'm considering doing something similar to honor my late grandmother (who's name was Margaret, funnily enough!). I think that it's all in your intentions – even if you alter the name slightly, if your daughter's name is inspired by your grandmother, then you are honoring her.

  • @lecool thanks! Also funnily enough is that you and I are the same age, and in December your DH and my DH will be the same age.
  • @EEL0824 ...and you got married on my DH's birthday...which was only 3 days before we got married.
