I actually think we have a name.Well one we both haven't decided against..that's a good start I think! So we've been bouncing around the idea of having an Arthur Jack. (Jack in memory of SO's grandfather) I like the nickname AJ but would hate baby to be called Artie. I haven't got a lot of positive feedback over the name Arthur though. Any thoughts?

Now we need to find our inspiration for a girl's name.. joys of team green

@Burrberrymum Our little one is going to be Arthur Philip. (ETA: Philip is also in memory of a family member.) So obviously I love it. I didn't at first, but it somehow grew on me tremendously in a very short period of time. (Our previous choice was Theodore, which I still love too.)
I think some people might not love it at first, but I have gotten a lot of (I think genuine) positive responses as well. It's a great, classic name.

  • @Faith1318 Theodore was SO's next pick as well! I find Arthur growing on me too. I haven't been able to get it out of my head since we both said it was nice. I like that it's a name that ages well as LO gets older. It's hard trying not to get attached to the name since we may not even be able to use it if LO is a girl.
  • DH appears to have conceded on Evangeline.  Now, how do I convince him that her nickname is Evan?!

  • @Burrberrymum, I know a 10 year old Arthur and no one has ever tried to call him Artie -- he's just Arthur.  I love the name on a kid!

@Burrberrymum I love Arthur :) Warning though, people will call your kid whatever they want and probably won't care about how you feel about it. I have a nephew with a very unique name that is ethnic and one aunt keeps trying to get everyone to call the kid Chilly, which is sort of a really Anglicized short version of the name, even though the kids parents hate it. (My nephew is half black Hispanic but the rest of the family is white, so some of the older family members are still weirded out by the name even though the poor kid is two.) My kiddo is Charles and even though my husband has said more than once we really just like Charles family constantly call him Charlie or Chuck.

  • @longliveregina good point.  In my experience, it's easier when the parents have a particular nickname they start calling the kid from birth than the opposite, where they want to use the kid's full name and family/friends/the kid themselves has another idea.  don't name your kid Katherine if you hate the name Kate!

I also know multiple Dans in their 30s who try so, so hard to be Daniels.  They can't get it to stick, and its THEIR name we're talking about, not parents trying to control the kid's name.
  • We actually picked our boy name out few years ago when we were still just dating, just having a casual conversation - Owen Ferrell, named for each of our maternal grandfathers.

  • LOVE these names! We have gone back and forth several times, and have tried so many options to fit in 2 middle names to nod back to both families, but the names ended up being clunky and weird and in the end, we just went with a name we both really love, and have settled on it, Oscar Harrison.
  • DH and I are STILL going back and forth between our top two: Claire Elise & Natalie Rose
  • @kjd291 love both choices! Natalie would have been a top three for me no questions asked except I have two cousins with the name already :( I hope when she comes it is an easy choice!

  • @kjd291 i love both names. they are different enough from each other that hopefully one sticks out as the clear winner once you meet her :)
  • Thanks guys! I'm leaning towards Natalie, but that's the name we thought we were going to name our DD1 too and changed our minds last minute. So I'm not letting myself get too attached.  I agree-I think they are so different. I have pictures of what each name would look like/personalities that go with them... so we'll see if it's an easy pick or if we have some major hospital debates ;) hah
  • I'm getting cold feet on our middle name.  We were pretty set on Joseph Henry, but now I'm not so sure. Henry was DH's Papa (deceased 13 years ago), and he was a tough nut to crack. Not everyone in the family's favorite person. But it's also both our dad's middle names, which I thought was cool, but something about it, I'm not sure anymore.... Joseph is already after DH's great uncle, who is like a grandfather to us.

    I currently have:

Joseph Andrew (Andrew is my uncle and godfather)
Joseph Alexander (I am mildly obsessed with Hamilton the musical)
Joseph Clark (Clark is my mom's maiden name)
Joseph Oliver (we love Arrow, ha)

  • We've got an Elliott Poplar in the oven.

I kept my maiden name, which begins with a P,  and I really wanted to get that P initial into his name. We looked at every single "normal" boys name that begins with P and couldn't find a single one we liked. If the little dude had been a dudette, the middle name was going to be Poppy... so I got a little creative. I figure if Poppy is a name and Skylar is a name and Poplar is a kind of tree anyway, then why the hell not.

That said, we've kept his middle name secret from all but my younger sister to avoid any well-intentioned family members sharing their opinions.

  • @kjd291 love the name Natalie!
  • @kjd291 also love Natalie
  • @kjd291 looks like I'm going against the flow but I think Claire Elise is an awesome name! Either way, nice choices  :)
  • @UnicornsPlease Poplar is the best non-traditional name I've heard in a long, long time.  Absolutely LOVE IT!  Your family is going to love it!

You're inspiring me to keep thinking outside the box.  We're still brainstorming a girl middle name and I want something that's unique - and a little edgy - but still an actual name.  Back to the drawing board!
  • For a boy we've decided on Luke Sanford.. Our son is James Benjamin. James was my grandfather's middle name and Benjamin is my husband. As a teacher and lover of phonics, I love that Luke is the same type of syllable as James. Sanford is DH grandfather's middle name.

For a girl.. we thought we were set on Ruby Josephine. Josephine being DH's grandma. However.. I love the middle name Mae and really like Ruby Mae. My hesitation with Josephine is that my MIL is Mary Jo and brother in law is Joe.. so I don't want it to turn into some dumb nickname that people use and call her "Ruby Jo" ... thoughts?

  • @Cbeanz Aw, thanks! It's really nice to get positive feedback like that :)

Good luck finding the perfect girl middle name. Stick to your guns and you'll definitely come up with a name that makes you smile!

  • @shines721 yassssss Ruby is one of my favorite names. I love it so much but DH hates it :'( I'll probably end up naming a pet Ruby or something. Ruby Jo is super cute IMO and a sweet family tradition, but Ruby Mae is also lovely and feminine. I would say wait till you meet her and decide the middle name!
  • @shines721 our little one will me Molly Mae so Im a fan of Mae. :)

  • @mecoats I actually saw your post about Molly Mae and it reminded me how much I love Mae! Her name is so sweet!

My almost 3yo DD has informed me that this baby's name is "Lucy" and she has been referring to my belly as "baby Lucy" since probably around Thanksgiving. she also has insisted this baby was a girl since before I found out at my 20 week sonogram, so I figure maybe she's more in tune to this pregnancy/baby than I am lol

Im not sure I would have picked "Lucy" but after hearing DD talk about "baby Lucy" for so long now, it's hard to imagine the baby being called anything else!

ETA - I'm considering a double middle name - so the full name would be Lucy Cecilia lily. Ive always loved the name Cecilia and lily is the name of my last living grandma, who turns 90 next month!

@shines721, how about Ruby Mae Josephine? I don't always love three names, but Ruby and Mae are short enough and flow together so well, I think it works. Plus Ruby Mae Jo is cute if it ends up going that way. :-)

@littleSkittle14, I love that you are honoring your family. That is important to me too. My little girl will have my grandmothers name as a middle name, even though I don't like the name itself that much. I adored my grandmother and really want my girl to have that connection to her.
  • @littleSkittle14 Lucy was a top contender for us if LO had been a girl, we both love that name :)

We are leaning heavily towards Lucas but we still aren't 100% ... my husband comes from a long line of James I don't like the name James so luckily DH has agreed we don't have to make it his name but I've told DH that we could use James as a middle name so he's kinda set on Lucas James which I don't hate but don't love. My moms maiden name is Wilson I wanted to use Wilson as a middle name but DH says Lucas Wilson sounds too much like the actor Luke Wilson ... I don't think middle names are used enough for that to matter. I recently suggested Lucas Andrew (Andrew is my brothers name but everyone has only ever called him Andy) and DH didn't shoot that one down and actually we both decided to replace it with another option Lucas Grant. Either way we haven't told any friends or family our options at all yet. And of course then the 2016 list of boys names came out and Lucas is in the top! I had no idea it was so popular... I'm a teacher and never even had a Lucas in class.
  • @ashley14598      My son is Lucas James :) it wasn't very popular 2 years ago when we named him, but apparently has become quite popular.  Also, we love Lucy for a girl but thought having a Lucas and a Lucy would be ridiculous haha we finally decided on Elise!
  • @Lexxilou1986 Sounds Like we have similar tastes in names ... I love Elise!
  • we are team green. For a little boy we have settled on Rhys William and for a little girl Violet Elizabeth  (Elizabeth is a family tradition on my side, being a middle name for women going back at least 5 generations) I'm still in LOVE with the name Evelyn by hubby won't budge.
  • kjd291 Claire is beautiful! Feminine but strong. And while I really do like Natalie a ton too I think ppl would try  to call her Nat. Depending on how you feel about that? Silly I know...

We now have a list of 12 girl names... whew.. but here are the ones I consider to be the top for us. Middle name will be Jane (DH fav grandmother)

    Elianna
Emmalin/Emmalynn (Lynn is mil middle name)
    Annabelle

    Thoughts?

  • @vino831 i love Elianna Jane. Elianna is beautiful and underused plus you have a couple of nn options. Annabelle was on our list and I love that one too but I think it's getting more popular if that matters to you. Emmalin doesn't compare in my opinion.
  • I like Elianna Jane the best! Annabelle second. Agree emmalin isn't one of my faves.

@vino831 yes! "Nat" as a nickname is one of the top reasons I don't like that name. Haha. But My 18mo old DD has started calling the baby bump "Bebe nat-ee" so I'm leaning toward it anyway because of that cuteness. We'll see!
  • @kjd291 Oh my... that is stinkin' adorable. Would totally sway me!
  • @vino831 I love Elianna Jane I think was My favorite of your choices too :)
  • Have any of you done the whole - "hollering" your potential kids names? To use the name sternly?

I dont think that "ELIANNA!" or "ELIANNA JANE!" comes off well when I do that lol. Haha not a deciding factor ofc but still....

Its almost like Elianna is too feminine/foo foo of a name to me.  And I think its bc it ends in "anna"

Oh and my sons name is 3 syllables I thought another 3  syllable name would be good... I'm making no sense I know.... My sons name is Harrison Kent.

Someone have any logic for me?
  • @vino831 I think Elianna Jane has awesome hollering potential! Haha I think it's a great name.

  • @vino831 totally! I don't do the yelling quite as much as I try out using the name in my daily vocab... especially try them out with my mostly clueless toddler. put that in ____s room. when ____  comes home. Nora-share with _____.  Time for  _____'s bath. Haha.

Also: Just because most people use a full name for yelling doesn't mean you'd have to!  Maybe you'd just yell "Ellie!!" Cuz it rolls off the tongue easier?
