Easy & Adorable DIY Smash Cake Idea

Just thought I'd share what I plan to make for the little guy's first birthday smash cake! I went back and forth about whether I should buy a cake or make one, then saw this idea and was sold!

I've never piped a cake before, but the piping on this looks super easy and I just love the giant cupcake look! Here's the cake pan I bought:

Just follow the directions by the reviewers regarding bake time (the top of the cupcake cooks faster than the bottom, so you bake the bottom part alone for 10-15 minutes first before adding the mix for the top portion).

Then I'm making normal-sized cupcakes for everyone else at the party to match.

Definitely something I'll plan on making again in the future!

Re: Easy & Adorable DIY Smash Cake Idea

  • I used the same pan for our photo shoot last week.  Def do the top part after the bottom has cooked for 15-20 like the teviews say. The mfg directions are def flawed.  Also, the outside of mine was much darker than the inside. It wasn't burnt, but the dark metal pan makes the cupcake itself dark, even if the batter is light. I did a coconut flour recipe and it came out looking dark on the outside once cooked. But other than that we had wonderful results for our smash cupcake. Good luck!!
  • You can also buy heating cores to help speed the baking of the base. It is basically a hollow cone that goes in the middle of the batter. The cake will then cook from the outer edge and from the middle.
