@mom2adoodle I learned very early on in dating my Jewish husband that Jews do not send flowers when someone dies because they also eventually die off (and I'm sure for other reasons)... instead everyone sends food, just hoards of casseroles while the family sits shiva (in mourning). It's really amazing. Not saying you have been through a tragedy, Fin is quite a blessing, but food would be the better option in this case as well!
@AnnaS930 Yes! The mountains of food is genius during shiva. While my friend was mourning the death of his sister, the volume of food brought to him and his mother was astounding!! And so delicious! I had the best knishes of my life that week *drool*
I too don't want flowers. I worked in a flower shop too, so definitely not in to them. But for my first Mother's Day, H sent flowers to my office, and that one time, I loved them. I dried them and put them in a glass, see through frame in my office. I still lI've those flowers because they were so unexpected.
This isn't a confession but along the lines of flowers as gifts...
The strangest gift, by far, that we received from our baby showers with DD was from DH's Aunt and Uncle. She is really into plants and those "fairy gardens" were just becoming popular. She painstakingly arranged and planted one for us complete with little figurines. When she gave it to me, I swear my immediate thought was, "And what the Hell am I supposed to do with this?" Normally, I'd never be the type to be ungrateful for any gift but, in that case, I was welcoming a child into my life, had registered for plenty of truly necessary, useful things, had no green thumb and you're giving me a plant?! I'm going to be focusing all of my energy on keeping an infant alive and now I need to add this plant to my list of responsibilities? I obviously accepted the gift graciously but didn't feel at all guilty three months later when the damn thing got tossed. It was so overgrown (not only needed water but also "landscaping" to keep it looking like a garden vs a jungle) and dried out! Sorry, not sorry, Auntie B. Next time, just a package of diapers will do.
I looooove flowers! But I think, I'm not a fancy flower type of gal. I like weeds. LOL. No seriously. Flowering weeds are so pretty.
I do love lacy looking flowers. Baby's Breath and Lavender are two of my favorites. Everyone seems to ignore the Baby's Breath because it's used so much as just "filler" in flower arrangements, but I love that stuff even though it's messy when dried.
I leave my flowers out until they've dried up completely. I mean, totally crispy and fragile. Then I remove the petals and put them in little storage boxes for Potpourri. Glass jar. Dried flowers. Essential Oil. Yeeeeesssssssss.
I love flowers, love them. But when you have a baby, especially a premature baby, I think the last thing you need is flowers. I agree that food should be at the top of the list. Or cleaning service. Or even something for baby. Flowers seem strange for that situation though.
When we had our second daughter, friends sent us a box of gourmet brownies. I was like, "this mom knows what's up". Healthy? No. But man was it nice to have a treat after some long days and nights. I think my second favorite was small trays of frozen lasagna and garlic bread from my aunt and uncle. Food was really a great gift.
