Tilted Uterus

Does anyone have experience with a tilted uterus?

I had my first appointment with my doctor today and she did an abdominal ultrasound in office and said my uterus was tilted and she could basically only see my full bladder.  She could barely see a gestational sac. I should be about 8 weeks.  So she is sending me for a transvaginal ultrasound tomorrow for dating.  Longest wait ever!

In both of my previous pregnancies I had issues with bleeding so I had transvaginal ultrasounds around 6 weeks.  My first ended up breech and my second I had an anterior placenta but still delivered vaginally.

Anyone else have a tilted uterus and trouble seeing the babe on an abdominal Ultrasound?

Re: Tilted Uterus

  • I have a tilted uterus, though my OB starts with a transvaginal ultrasound at the first appt (7-8 weeks). There hasn't been an issue using that kind. Keep us posted on how tomorrow's scan goes! FX you get a good peek.

  • I have a tilted uterus and they tried to do a abdominal at almost 8 weeks and couldn't see well so they did the transvaginal and saw my baby just fine that way. Totally normal!
  • I saw my RE, and the early scans are always trans-vag, since the abdominal might not always pick up so soon, I was having scans since 5 weeks.  I also have a tilted uterus, so he has to probe from all angles sometimes, but going through IF, you become best friends with the vag-cam LOL  I didn't start receiving abdominal ones with DD until the NT scan around 12-14 weeks.

  • I got one. the doctors call it "retroverted uterus" ....anyways. my high risk says that is making me harder to clear the bladder so im on "bladder watch" I need to pass the peeing test next Monday and they will check to make sure I cleared my bladder with the Ab Ultrasound, or else she will be concerned. it just over all makes it harder to see the babies, especially cus one hides in the back? whatever that means.. TV ultrasound is good though =] my doctors told me not to worry, it will correct itself eventually.

  • Thanks ladies! That makes me feel better.  Hopefully all is well at my apt tomorrow!
  • I have a tilted uterus too. I got a tranvaginal ultrasound up to 10 weeks and doc never trys the other beforehand. He also said it rights itself during pregnancy and not to worry about it being tilted.

  • @mrsyimster - I had trouble emptying my bladder in previous pregnancies and my doctor said to lean forward after I think I'm done to see if I can squeeze any more out (I'm paraphrasing lol).  I feel the same way now where I can literally always pee.  I had peed right before my ultrasound yesterday when she said my bladder was super full!
  • I have a tilted uterus, and it hangs off to one side the ultrasound tech told me when I went in for a transvaginal two weeks ago. Yesterday I was 10 weeks, had my appointment, instead of using a doppler she just did an abdominal u/s and we saw the baby (and my full bladder) quite easily. I haven't had my uterus placement make an issue getting a good u/s picture at all personally. But I think I've heard 8 weeks is a little early to get a good abdominal u/s.

Tilted uterus here with anterior placenta. I only had transvaginal U/S's until 10 weeks. At 10 weeks the Dr. couldn't even pick up the heartbeat on the doppler, and the abdominal u/s was super blurry.

  • Mine is super tilted. They've tried abdominal ultrasound twice and can only see a hint of something. We had to do transvaginal instead and he had to put the probe at a weird angle to see the baby. I tried finding the HB on my doppler last night and only heard the placenta, so (even though it could also be too early) I'm wondering if my wonky ute is making it harder to pick up.

  • Mine is retroverted sometimes but not always.  It floats back & forth!  Not sure how she has been lying lately.  I keep forgetting to ask.

i have had scan issues in the past.  They are horribly anxiety inducing!

  • @JessyKV you said your first was breech and second was anterior placenta - did you deliver vaginally for both?  Or was the second one a VBAC?  Either way, go you!

Curious because my second was breech and automatic CS and I'm still very, very bitter about it.

@Cbeanz. I had a planned c section with my first at 39 weeks due to breech position and high blood pressure. I didn't try to turn her and I kind of wish I did but she was perfectly healthy so I can't complain much.  I also am still bitter though.   My second was a pain med free vbac and such an amazing experience!
  • My third was breech and anterior placenta. As I walked down the hall, in the hospital, to my planned c-section, she flipped. They did an ultrasound on the surgical table to confirm and I got to be induced. It was wonderful! Now my uterus is tilted, I am not 100% sure if it is an anterior placenta but the doctor seems to think this will be a c-section.
  • @JessyKV Wow! You're incredible! That's what I'm hoping for with this baby - vbac with zero intervention. I was devastated when my second was footling breech. I found no OB in the area who would even attempt vaginal delivery. My OB would deliver Frank, not footling. This baby better be head down!

*Sorry to hijack your thread. I have no input about tilted uterus :-)
  • Thank you and Good luck @Cbeanz !! I couldn't find anyone to deliver breech either.  Fingers crossed this little stinker cooperates for you and you get an awesome vbac!
  • For those of you with breech babies, did your doctor indicate that the retroverted uterus might have something to do with it? DS was breech, as well. My previous OB was a total idiot, so I never really got into it with her.

  • My doctor at the time didn't say anything about it but my doctor this time said it could have been a factor but since then since everything has stretched out she doesn't think it should be an issue again.  And my second was anterior and a bigger baby and he was head down the whole time.
  • Interesting. DS ended up being 9lbs 15 oz and was breech the entire time (from A/S to the very end). I'm interested to see what happens this time.

  • I found out today that I have a tilted uterus. The doctor didn't seem concerned though so I am hopeful it all works out.

  • @chrlyr My last midwife was so easy going that it was annoying so she never said that but I kind of wonder if that was the problem. I am going to ask my OB at my first appointment. Thank you for reminding me!
  • Lurking from TTGP and may '16.  I have a tilted uterus- the only problems it caused me were that I had to do transvaginal US until 10 weeks, and after I gave birth I had horrible back labor once the epidural wore off for the next two days

So at my 12 week ultrasound the tech said my uterus was still tilted- wtf uterus? When do you think it will flip? I see my OB in 2 weeks, hopefully he can give me some insight if it hasn't moved forward by then.

it will flip. it flips faster with 2, but my MFM said normally when it pushes out of the pelvis it'll correct itself (also depends on how tall u are, the shorter the sooner)

  • Mine is still way tilted at 10 weeks. Nothing but an outline of the sac is visible on abdominal u/s.

  • The tech told me mine was tilted at my 8 week ultrasound.  But it must not be too bad because she was able to get what she need without doing a vaginal ultrasound even though she had to push pretty hard and it wasn't very clear.  But the bad news is I asked my doctor if it mattered and she said it really doesn't, except that I might have back labor :(

  • found out I have a retroverted uterus today!
saw the baby and everything, but couldn't get a good enough view of the NT to do that screening. Apparently the shape corrects itself in the early 2nd trimester. Kind of cool that I still fit in all of my regular clothes though
