Crazy things you've done....

Now that we are all well into this whole creating-a-human thing, we know that we are supposed to take care of ourselves. Everyone says 'get a lot of rest, don't overdo it, take it easy, eat healthy, drink a lot of water, etc., etc., etc.,....'
But we all still have lives that we are involved in, and sometimes that means doing something that would make your doctor say 'what were you thinking???'

What have you done this pregnancy that some people would call crazy?

  • @tinattt23 I kept climbing in first tri too. I have tried to schedule a time to go in 2nd tri - using a full body harness - but it hasn't worked out. So much fun!

  • Cleaned the cat box once or twice, helped pack up our apartment and move with a 115 degree heat index, had some soft cheeses, had some cold lunch meat. I haven't really been too crazy this pregnancy, but it's only just halfway over, I still have time for more shenanigans ;)
  • I second the cold deli meat. I love sub sandwiches, and I had this delusion that I'd be able to just give up cold cuts after the BFP. That lasted all of two weeks. Most of the time I ask the deli lady to microwave the meat for me, but sometimes I just want a cold sandwich.

My "what was I thinking" moment happened this weekend. We live on a farm, and one of our trails had gotten overgrown. Before pregnancy, I could cut limbs with the polesaw for hours at a time, with just a little bit of sorenes the next day. So Friday I polesawed for about an hour, and then Saturday I polesawed again for another hour and half, thinking that I was taking it easy. For the last three days, I feel like I've been hit by a bus! I could barely get up on Sunday and Monday I felt so bad. I think I'm officially done with the polesaw for the rest of this pregnancy.
  • I think for me it's just accepting there's things I can't do right now. Taking trips for hours long car rides like to see family in the state over leave me feeling so hungover the next day. I have to do it twice more for baby showers (which I'm so grateful for, I swear).

But yesterday was dedicated to 100% self care after driving to GA and back on Sunday. I had to nap, hydrate, and load up on nutrition yesterday to regain my energy and finally get my headache to pass. I don't like being so tired and puny all the time. I'll take it no question for baby's sake, but it's easy for me to get frustrated with my limitations.

The things I miss most are coffee, lunch meats, and soft cheeses. I've definitely cheated a few times. I probably will again.

  • Daily caffeine, cold lunch meats, still lifting heavy (ish) things, 8+ hr round trip driving with no stops (except to pee), and lately not staying hydrated or eating enough. The last one is the toughest for me. Most days I just flat out forgot to eat or drink, and come dinner time I always end up with a headache due to it.
  • Still having the caffeine for sure!! I haven't had the guts to eat cold lunch meat but I want to SO bad!! I get subway cold cut subs but I get them toasted.

I helped lift and screw in drywall on the ceiling of the nursery...and then I did some mudding and taping above my head *gasp* my mom had a sh*t fit when I told her lol

  • I still have some coffee, but I try to alternate between getting regular and decaf so I don't feel so guilty.  Soft cheeses happen here and there, just because.  I'm sure it's just a matter of time before I break and drink a small amount of red wine too.  Overall I've been pretty cautious, but I doubt that'll last forever!

  • @Mamax2 I will often forget to eat or drink as well until it's too late. In addition to a headache I've found it also gives me crazy mood swings.
  • I got a lot of grief for volunteering at a golf tournament delivering cases of water last week!

Me 3! I only remember to eat when H shoves food in my face. Like this morning, if he hadn't thrown a poptart at me, I wouldn't have eaten and its noon.

Phew, I'm glad I'm not the only one admitting to drinking! Obvi not much, but I did have a few spread-out beers/glasses of port during first tri. Then I realized that was the worst time to do it. Oooooops. We'll see if the little mister suffers any consequences of my tomfoolery. I've been trying to decide if I want to get back on the occasional-glass-of-alcohol wagon now that I'm solidly into second tri, but I'm currently in the midst of a Whole30, so that's a no-go until September.

I've been a bit loose with my eating too, after reading books like The Panic-Free Pregnancy and Expecting Better. I've had a little bit of sushi, pink meat. I accidentally ate a sandwich with lunchmeat at H's grandmother's funeral and was a-okay. Knock on wood, but I don't tend to get sick from stuff as it is. That said, I am avoiding the important, scary stuff. (RIP, lox!)

Crazy coming up: H and I are hoping to travel to Norway/Scandinavia when he gets back from his deployment. I'll be in third tri then. We'll see how I handle the flight and all the walking!

    Edit: And of course coffee.

  • @kbduke yes to the crazy mood swings. As far as not drinking/eating enough, I'm trying to do better, as I ended up in the ER Saturday night for dehydration. Hopefully that was enough to teach me a lesson.
  • I have coffee nearly every day. Granted, it's an 8oz cup most days from my Keurig (which my GP said was perfectly fine since it's pretty diluted). And sometimes on Fridays, or if I am out running errands on a weekend, I'll stop by a coffee place for more coffee-type drinks. And come Fall... bring on all the PSL's I can handle in a week, ha.

DH has let me have sips of his beers, depending on the flavor. This has happened a few times at home, and even when we've been out to eat, too. I miss the summer beers. For him to let me do this is a HUGE deal, as he is concerned with everything I do.

I've had one cold deli meat sandwich, and it was good... ham and swiss from Panera. I could also really go for an Ebert and Gerberts (or Jimmy John's) sub sometime - just make sure NO sprouts for sure. That may be my this week Friday splurge.

I still order my steaks medium.

I've carried my 4YO nephew... he's still pretty light, though. The 7.5YO nephew (he has DS, so he's smaller for that age), I cannot anymore regardless.

  • @Kacie209 I thought of PSL's the other day, and I got REALLY excited. Like... too excited. Bring on Fall!

@JessCL I was in Europe this summer too  - Germany and France. Is it just me, or are the public restrooms awesome over there? You have to pay for a lot of them, which was a little inconvenient making sure we had change at all times, but they were SO CLEAN! I wish we had those here, especially at gas stations and rest stops along the highways. And a lot of them (at least at the gas stations) gave vouchers for your money back that you could spend at the shop!

Ah ladies love the truth game, with out flames! Mostly because no one has said anything too crazy. Mine are similar, lifting my 2 yr DS, moving furniture and heavy bins, eating sushi, and man if you could it a snarfs deli sandwich I highly recommend it! It's a once a week occurrence for me during the pregnancy, and caesar salads on the regular.

    Edit for sp
  • Moving across the world with a dog and toddler it tow, traveling outside of the country, lifting/moving heavy objects, drinking lots of caffeine and eating all the lunch meat. I can't quit cold cut sammies. Oh, here's a biggie, I've been incredibly terrible at taking prenatals.
  • @Sharkey Yes, I forgot to add prenatals. I take them maybe 3-4 times a week, but not every day like I probably should.

  • I drink coffee daily.  I've been way too tired to give it up, although I was more cautious during 1st tri.  I eat soft cheeses, but I make sure they're pasteurized.  I lift my 65 lb dog up on the bed on a regular basis because she is lazy, and every time I tell her it's the last time.  I need to drink more water, especially when I travel - I'm much better about it when I'm home.  I've been flying a lot, but I haven't had any issues and I only have 5 flights left for the rest of the pregnancy.

I've really been craving sushi and after reading this thread, tonight I'm giving in and getting some.

  • @karmba As long as it's from a legit source, you should be fine! From the NHS:

"Lots of the sushi sold in shops is not made at the shop. This type of sushi should be fine to eat, because if a shop or restaurant buys in ready-made sushi, the raw fish used to make it will have been subject to an appropriate freezing treatment."

  • I also drink one cup of coffee a day, but its been signed off by my doctor... Need some way to attempt to manage my ADHD when I can't take the rest of my stimulants!
    EQD born 12/15!

  • @ashleaf2018  I figure there are much worse habits to have!  And you shouldn't feel bad about doing whatever you can to combat the MS.  It sucks that yours is still hanging around at this point!
  • @thedaint87 Yep, the MS is still a work in progress! Per my OB, the next step is to try Nexium. I really hope that works, I definitely err on the side of not taking medicine so taking a bunch of different things for the nausea has been really weird. But if it helps where the natural remedies haven't, I definitely won't complain! :)
  • I went to India and the Middle East for three weeks during my first trimester because I had already committed for a work trip.  It was so hot, but made it back okay!

  • I'm also a daily caffeine drinker. I have one cup of coffee a day and love the ish out of it. I've also had deli meat....
