Birthing Positions

Just curious... Mamas who did not have an epidural - did your doctor/hospital let you choose what position you wanted to push in (like hands & knees, squatting, side lying etc.)? Or did they require you to be on your back (with or without being slightly propped up)?

The L&D at hospital I'm going to do have squat bars available if I want to use it, and in the hospital birth class many birthing positions were introduced - so I was under the impression that I could choose the position when it's time to push. I want to choose a position that can use gravity in my favor and open up the pelvis more, thinking it would make things easier. (I might now know which one I like best until the time comes though! Probably have to try a couple.) When I talked to one of the doctors at my OB's practice though, he flat out dismissed evening discussing the possibility. (He's not my regular OB, but I saw him as one of the rotations to meet other doctors at the practice. Love all the other doctors, but not him.) He said it's not convenient for him to get in there and said something like "where did you get that idea from?!"...  It was like he thought I asked a stupid question and I sensed contempt in his response. I was a little upset but too stunned to think of something to say, so I didn't say anything at the time. I rotate back to my regular OB this Wednesday and will discuss birthing positions with her... Hopefully she's more open to the idea, or at least be more gentle about it and explain why if she prefers me to be on my back.

Now I just pray when it's go time, the one on call won't be the OB I'm uncomfortable with... Fingers crossed!

Re: Birthing Positions

  • In my two experiences without any pain medications they're much more flexible, I pushed for about 30 min with my older DD in different positions (sitting, squatting and hands and knees) but ended up having her on my back. This DD was born six minutes after my water was broken including getting her arm unstuck (she was trying to suck her thumb and got caught with it around her neck). I had her kind of sitting up.

I had DD on hands & knees and it was so nice. Gravity definitely helped pull her down. That being said there was more blood as well. The midwife & nurse commented on the amount of blood and looked like a  murder scene. You'll just have to find what's most comfortable whether it is "convenient"  or not.
