GD Test?

When is everyone doing theirs? A bunch of my friends on FB who are around the same weeks as me are doing theirs this week and my doctor still hasn't mentioned it. Just curious when you did / are doing yours. Hope everyone passes!

  • I just scheduled mine for 28 weeks. I could have sworn last time it was 26. Had to ask them to order fruit punch flavor so i wasn't stuck with nasty orange flavor.

My doctor wanted me to take it at 28 weeks. I am 24 weeks now, and due to my PCOS I actually wanted to take it earlier but it seems like he does not change his mind.
  • I did one early and my regular ob wanted to do the second at 26 but the high risk dr told me to wait until closer to 28 weeks
  • Okay so it sounds like I'm right in the sweet spot. I have an appointment next week so I'm sure he'll bring it up then (and if not, I'll ask) but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

This is probably better for the FFFC post but is it bad that I kind of hope I have it? Just so it forces me to eat healthier. My sugar habit has gotten exponentially worse since I got pregnant.
  • I did mine at 28 weeks each time and got the rhogam shot too.
  • My OB does them at 28 weeks but I've heard anything from 24-28.

You don't want it - I promise. Not so much for the hassle of dealing with finger pokes, being high risk and minding your sugar, but for the fact that you may be turned down for life insurance after because you have had it. If you are really worried about your diet, I'm sure you could see a pre-natal dietitian, but GD is not the way to get there.

My next appointment is @ 23 weeks and some change. My Dr. told me he'd give me the paperwork at that appt.

  • I had an early one at 20 weeks and passed but my next is at 28 weeks. Did fruit punch the first time and was thinking about doing orange this time. Is orange no good?

I didn't know about the life insurance thing but that makes sense. probably the same for medical coverage in the future. It also puts you at greater risk for type 2 diabetes later on. Fingers crossed most of us come out without it! I had orange and lemon lime... both were tolerable.
  • I'm not 100% sure when I'll have it, but probably right at about 28 weeks. My next appointment is August 10th at 25+4 and that's just a regular OB check up, so they'll probably get me in again right around 28 weeks for the GD test. I really hope I don't have it. It wouldn't be the greatest if I did. The last thing anyone recovering from an eating disorder needs is to be put on any sort of "diet", period.

  • @MrsBigTime You're probably right. I just need to buckle down and ignore the cravings!
  • @mayergirl920 lol i don't actually know if orange is bad or not. I had fruit punch last time and I thought it tasted close to a red Gatorade or a typical red drink which i don't mind. Personal preference I guess and fake orange flavor gives me headaches and I can taste it for the rest of the day. I found it interesting that they can order the different flavors from the lab, I dont know why they dont have options in office. Especially since its for pregnant people with sometimes extreme aversions.

  • I was given my paperwork for it at my appointment last week and was told to take the test anywhere between 24 and 28 weeks. I'll probably take mine in two weeks when I have less going on. I felt so awful and weak after it last time around.

Some Drs use variations of the test, but generally you fast x12 hours, go to the lab/office and drink the glucose drink, sit there for an hour, get blood drawn and then leave. It's time-sensitive x 1 hr. so you can't really be kept longer than that.

  • I will get it done at my next monthly appt (I'll be about 26 weeks).  I go in about 10 min before appt to the lab to get the drink, then I go to my appt and back to the lab afterword at the 1 hour mark.

I found orange not so bad, but I drank it for the 1 hour test.  The 2 and 3 hour tests tasted worse to me and gave me much worse jitters.

  • Mine is Tuesday(I'll be 26+6) and they told me I could eat like normal up until I drink the stuff. Then drink it within 5 minutes about an hour before my appointment. My appointment is at 9am so I plan on getting up, eating breakfast, drink the stuff at 8 then DH will drive me to the office.
  • I had an early one at 20 weeks and passed but my next is at 28 weeks. Did fruit punch the first time and was thinking about doing orange this time. Is orange no good?
The orange one is gross. It has a kind of metallic taste that may be due to the fake citrus. I went to the lab near my house for my early GD test (yay, family history!) because they were the only one open on a Saturday and their only option was orange. It was vile, like a sweeter, flatter orange soda.
  • I'm waiting to get my blood drawn now and I'm 25w 5d. My dr told me at my last appt that I would have it done today with my last pregnancies they didn't tell me until I was there around 26w. This time they didn't give me an option on the flavor drink so I ended up with fruit puch which was actually not bad. And I was told not to fast.
  • Like some of you, mine has directions to drink w/in 5 minutes, one hour before my appointment (actually they said to drink it 30 minutes before, so that by the time i got checked in and bp/weight taken it would be 30 minutes or so). Also, wanted to note that my glucose solution says on the package to eat beforehand but to make sure to have something with protein (fat okay), but no carbs or sugar--it suggests having eggs. Just thought it would important for folks to know--i guess if you had carbs or sugar before the test you might get an artificially high reading?
  • Mine said to eat a protein and a carb (an egg and a piece of toast was the example).  It's funny how different the instructions are!

  • I had to do mine early on due to my age being over 35. It was done at 16 weeks, and I was diagnosed with GD. It has been a tough trek managing it now, and having to monitor myself four times a day, however its worth knowing that I'm helping to prevent problems that may occur later on in the development of my little man, or after birth.
  • I did mine at 24 weeks because of my age (36) and I was told to fast for 3 hours before.  They didn't give me an amount of time to drink it in, but since I knew I had to wait an hour, I drank it pretty fast (then felt sick after LOL).  I was lucky enough not to have it.
  • Just did mine today (27+1). I was given fruit punch that was chilled and it really wasn't bad at all, until I finished the bottle and felt like throwing up the next two hours. I was asked to fast for 10 hours (stop eating and drinking everything except for water after 10pm) and went in at 8am. I had to stay for two hours and blood drawn twice, once each hour after the drink. Results came in fast because I got an email to see that I passed.
  • Mine is on Monday. They told me to eat like normal but nothing sugary, go to the lab first and have the drink, then have my OB appointment during the hour I'm waiting to go back for the blood draw.
  • I had the 2hr test and orange drink today. I had the option to go in anytime between 26 and 28 weeks. It was a fasting test with nothing but a little water after about 10pm the night before. The drink wasn't bad--like very concentrated Gatorade.  I didn't drink much water before I went in, so maybe it helped that I was thirsty! I definitely felt all the sugar hit me during the first hour. By the second hour I felt basically normal, just hungry :) If you bring something to pass the time between tests, it's not bad at all--in my experience.
  • See my midwife this week and imagine I'll have to go soon. I'm 26 weeks.
Was sort of gross last time when I had the orange. Warm. Ick.
  • I have mine today. Not looking forward to it. Not sure if I'm supposed to eat something or not, I guess I'll just fast.
  • Mine is scheduled for August 22 (29 weeks) and I was told to eat a low carb, protein rich breakfast. My lab is at 8:30 am so fairly early. I am not looking forward to the test - made me feel super sick last time. Will be glad to check it off my list, though. I'll see my OB immediately after the test.

  • I had mine last week. I actually liked the orange drink haha. I ate scrambled eggs before, since you don't have to fast for this one. You just don't want to eat anything with too many carbs or sugars. I passed! I was so nervous :D
  • I had mine 2 weeks ago, and I still don't know the results. I was 25 on the day I took it. Kinda angry with the office for not telling me my results, but according to them they haven't gotten them back from the lab. I refuse to do that again. I had the orange and it was so gross. Almost puked the whole time, but chugged it so I wouldn't have to stop and force myself to finish.
  • I just did mine on Thursday.  Today is my official 28 week mark.  I just got the results yesterday.  I failed the one hour,  so now I am waiting on a call from my ob to take the 3 hour test.  Anyone dine that one before?  This is my second pregnancy and I didn't get GD with my first though I was apparently close to the top end of the normal range.  I did eat right before my test,  like 30 or so minutes before drinking the drink.  Maybe that had something to do with my reading.  I know with my first I didn't have anything to eat before my test.
  • I'm doing mine at the 27 week mark as my OB suggested. My weeks are on Saturday so it'll probably be 27+2. My OB also said fasting gives you the most accurate results.  If you have glucose in your system then drink more you have a higher chance not to pass and you're stuck checking your blood sugar/pricking your finger when really it could have been that extra glucose in your system that tipped the scales. There is sugar in everything - so unless you're eating a piece of meat, I'd suggest having a protein / veggie dinner and doing it first thing in the morning. The lab told me I didn't have to fast, but I'm listening to my doctor.
  • I did mine at 9 weeks. I was told to eat toast 2 hours before then go. I failed that one hour, so they had me do the 3 hour test which I fasted for due to the recommendation of the lab and I passed. Just like the one hour they take a fasting blood draw when you first go in, you drink a more concentrated sugar drink 100 ml, I had 5 minutes to drink it. It was lime flavor and was actually not bad. Just tasted like a melted popsicle. Then they draw blood every hour. I was not allowed to leave the lab waiting area, but im not sure if thats just my lab or if that is standard procedure. I passed that 3 hour test but had to redo the 3 hour again at 24 weeks because I had failed the 1 hr previously. This time the dr. told me to fast for 8 hours and i passed. I did learn after the first time doing this to make sure I drink plenty of water and eat after the test is over because I have never had the shakes so bad in my life!
  • I had mine on Thur. I found out the results the same day (they drew my blood and went to check it immediately.) I got there and they gave me the lemon lime flavor, actually kind if tasty. Tasted like very sweet flat 7 up. Had to drink it within 5 min, then waited an hour. After the hour was up they drew blood and told me I passed. I did not need to fast at all.
