Can we talk about inductions?

Re: Can we talk about inductions?

  • I pumped both sides for a few minutes again last night and got good contractions for an hour or so after but then they fizzle out. I'm bummed. Somewhere said to pump for up to 3 hours? So 15 min on, 15min off?  That would be each side 3 times?

  • Loading the player...
  • I'm thinking about giving the pump a try. I'm due today. I think I'm gonna try it out on Monday. DH wants me to wait to it because he has to work on Monday. I still haven't had a real contraction, although I'm already 2 cm so I'm hoping it could get something started.
  • @Lydiadiane I've tried pumping, twice,  as well as walking.. 4 miles yesterday,  and sex... Nothing has worked for me yet, but good luck to you. I'm due tomorrow.
  • @ThisisNumber3 I read that if you are trying to use nipple stimulation it could take days. I used ice on the nipples with my first dd and my water broke 6 hours later, but she was also 3 days late so I assume I may have gone into labor anyway. With my ds, nothing worked.
  • Yea. Nothing is working. Still waiting on the dang hospital.

  • @ShanRum3 I've been walking as well. I just wish I could get DH on board for sex!
  • @texasmama2014 - I was talking with an OB nurse, from a pretty big hospital, and she said to try black licorice.  Apparently, they don't allow any of their pre-term moms to eat it because they believe it can cause contractions.  I've never heard it before but it may be worth a shot. I guess it has to be the real stuff- licorice root or extract.  Hopefully something works for you!
  • Ongoing induction now. What level pitocin were you all at when you started feeling it and making progress?  I'm at a 12 and barely feeling them and they are afraid it's not progressing me.

  • @thisisnumber3 I think I got to one level above that, but didn't really start progressing or having strong contractions until they broke my water.  I knew that pitocin could be a slow process but I guess I didn't realize how slow!

@ThisisNumber3- they kept turning my pitocin down because I was contracting too much.  The contractions weren't doing much because I was in labor for 29 hours.  It took a solid 24 hrs before I really started making progress.
  • Came in at 9pm to the hospital to start induction. Nurse couldn't get the iv right and now I have two big bruised bubbles under my skin on both hands. She had the anesthesiologist put in a basic iv. (Wth?) And when she checked my cervix she was all fast and furious and not gentle at all. It hurt like hell!!! On top of that she put in the cytotec pill which hurt because I guses gentle isnt in herror vocabulary. Ugh. I want to be patient with her, but I also want to kick this nurse to the curb and ask for a new one. It's now 2am and I'm feeling some small contractions fairly regularly. Can't sleep cause of bp cuff going off every 15 minutes.

  • @Whitmore1027 I would refuse anymore checks from that lady. But her shift should be over by the time things really start happening for you.
  • And I just realized this was like 10 hours ago lol. Hope it's going well!
  • @ShanRum3 good luck!! I already can't sleep so I know I'd be up all night if I had an induction scheduled too!
  • @ShanRum3  Good Luck!!!

I have my weekly appointment tomorrow (at 39 wks 4 days), and will probably be scheduling an induction for a week from today. I see no labor in the near future.
  • WWYD? I am well aware that I may get flamed for this....

So. I went to the doc yesterday (39 +4) and everything looked great- plenty of fluid, rockstar heart rate, my bp is fine, my weight is fine, my only real symptom is foot swelling and I live in Texas in the summer so thats normal. I am barely fingertip dilated and my cervix is HARD and HIGH. When we talked induction, I was feeling pretty brave and declined to schedule for next week.  She is going out of town for next weekend, and I would have to schedule for Wednesday at the latest.  I have an appointment with her Wednesday, but it looks like I wouldn't be able to schedule for anything earlier than the 29th.  If I went into labor next weekend she assured me that I would actually have her doctor, who she loves and said would be her first choice to deliver a baby if she were to have one.

Here's my dilemma:  We are going on a cross country road trip for my sisters wedding in less than a month.  I am a bridesmaid (so yeah, vanity is an issue, and I hate myself for it).  Also, DH won a trip to Costa Rica for the 2 of us and the baby in October and if we waited until the 29th baby would not be immunized yet and I wouldn't want to bring them on a flight.  Clearly these are FWP, and it makes me feel pretty selfish to evict the baby for no real reason.  (other than their own immune health and what not before we travel both times).  I had DD via induction at 40 +3, which would be this Wednesday for this baby as well.  Everything went great and we had no complications.

    Advice? Flames?

(In the mean time I am doing stairs, running, walking, eating pineapple, having sex (I used the position I believe we conceived in last night just to see if maybe that might do something, it didn't), dancing, bouncing on an exercise ball, and all that.  I also bought some evening primrose capsules last night and started using those, because even though its late hey it might work right?  Oh and jalapenos on everything, chased by tums! Also having DH rub my feet and find pressure points. Trying to relax but thats a tough one!

  • @texasmama2014 Wow, that's tough. I wouldn't induce early if it was just the wedding thing, but I see your concerns about the Costa Rica trip. Have you talked to your doctor about the immunization thing? I don't know what the regulations are about whether they have to wait til 2 months old to the date, but would they immunize LO a couple days early?

  • @texasmama2014 I may be setting myself up for a flame myself, but my induction was scheduled when I was 39+6 so I wasn't even over due technically! I was just ready to meet her and was done with being pregnant. I was already 3cm and 80% effaced. I ended up going into labor the day before on my own. I went to the hospital at my scheduled induction time of 2am on 8/11. I was have contractions 8 minutes apart at that time.

So long story short I say go ahead and schedule it, you still have time to go into labor on your own like I did. Plus you've already delivered before so your body will probably respond well to being induced again.
  • @tisunge602  In our pedi office they don't do anything "early" they are very literal and try to do the well baby appointments on the exact day.  With almost a week between induction dates it makes me nervous.  I feel like I'll never go into labor! Also, if you look at LMP I am due Sunday, but "conception" could either be this past Wednesday, or tomorrow.  Not a huge difference but in my brain it is!!
  • @jkershaw2013 DH is all about scheduling for next week. I'm leaning towards calling on Monday and scheduling.
  • @texasmama2014 I was going to be induced at 39 weeks exactly. My doc was ok with doing it as long as I was dilated and my cervix was thinning. I was 4cm dilated and 70 effaced at my 38 week appt, so my induction would have been scheduled at my next appt. Thankfully baby didn't wait that long and came on his own at 38+1.
You're going to be overdue, so I wouldn't feel too guilty. And this isn't your first, so that helps too. And there are risks to being overdue, so either way, you are looking at risks.
    Good luck!

Gotcha. I say if you've had a successful induction in the past, then go for it. You'll still be past 40 weeks. We could be induction buddies! (I'm getting induced Wednesday too!)

  • @texasmama2014 I was induced at 39 +6 because I have to go back to work part time next week so I wasn't willing to be overdue. I was dilated a couple cms and softening, but my cervix was high and posterior. Baby also had not dropped and refused to drop past my pelvic bone even after hours of labor, so I ended up with a c-section.  I don't regret it, though. Costa Rica is really great. Make sure you pack some bug spray.

  • @texasmama2014 - we just had to make this decision and we decided to schedule an induction at 40+3 and a rcs at 40+5.  I was set on waiting until 41-42 weeks but we decided to go ahead with it.  If I were in your position I probably would, to make sure baby is vaccinated for the trip. I have a weird fear about catching something at a hospital while in another country, though.
  • They just scheduled me for an induction to start Wednesday evening (40+5) if nothing happens before then. I have had zero effacement or dilation as of yesterday but I'm still hoping for spontaneous labor!!
  • @katie121209  Looks like Wednesday could be a day of inductions!
  • I was feeling guilty about scheduling an induction (at 40w2), but once my dr started expressing her concerns about going too long after the due date, I felt like there were potential issues with that as well.  Im glad we went through with the induction, esp after LO was 9 lbs 4 oz!
  • @texasmomma2014 I think you're fine! I scheduled an "elective" induction prior to my EDD. Elective meaning it was only because of size which I understand is technically not a reason to induce. My theory is if you know your dates and you are full term, there really isn't that much of a difference within a week.

  • @texasmama15 Although ours wasn't scheduled and we actually went in for a pre-e scare, I was ready to beg to be induced at 40 weeks on the dot just because he was flipped the right way and I have no regrets asking for it (they didn't even do the pre-e screen until I was hooked up). As I see it he was full term (I knew our due date was spot on) and it was in his best interest to be induced, though we could have waited. I think having the baby have his shots before vacation would be important enough to me to go ahead with scheduling it early.
  • @texasmama2014 , FWIW, I say go for it. All of my babies have been/will be born prior to 40 weeks and are just fine. To me, traveling without immunizations scares me way more than baby being born a few days early.
  • I say go for it @texasmama2014! I was just induced at 40w3d. Although it was a long labor,  it turned out well. I wouldn't have wanted to wait any longer. At that point,  there really is no extra benefit to having baby inside vs. outside.

@texasmama2014 I was so scared of being induced but elected in for several reasons. I was induced at 39+4.  I'm glad I did it now and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.  It was nice to have a date set and know that baby would be here.  Several other women were at my hospital being induced as well.  I also live in Texas and the heat was getting to me (although this week is rainy and not nearly as hot).  Also, I was only a fingertip dilated a few days before induction.  When I got there they said 1cm.  Did two rounds of Cytotec which got my cervix pretty soft and then pitocin.  My water broke on its own after pitocin and body responded to the meds really well.  I say go for it but understand your worries.
  • I wanted to update and say the induction portion of our experience was pretty easy. We did two days worth of cervix softening meds, with mild contractions the whole time, and lots of sleeping and eating. My water broke, and the labor progressed naturally from there. I was able to go med free all the way through labor, and required no additional interventions until delivery.
Delivery was a cluster duck, but it was completely unrelated to the induction.

  • @texasmama2014 although my water broke so I kinda went into labor on my own, I still had to be induced when I got to the hospital. It was wonderful. We were calm waiting to leave and getting to the hospital, I wasn't annoyed by the tests and waiting, and I got an epidural before the pitocin so I never even had to feel a contraction. If I were going to have more kids I'd hope to be induced again! My first two everything was crazy going into labor and rushing around. And I was in so much pain before I could get anything for it because my labors were so fast. The first kid the epi didn't even work. I know most inductions don't go the way mine did, but I definitely see a lot more pros to it now. Not for everyone, but you've done it before successfully, so yay for baby coming next week!
  • Induction at 6am.. How am I supposed to sleep tonight????

I don't go in until late afternoon but I just took a Benadryl in hopes of trying to get some sleep :/

I had an appointment last night at 39+4. The doctor said I was was 1/2 fingertip dilated and did a membrane sweep. She then told me I could come in anytime after 40 weeks (Sunday) to be induced. Any time and date of my choosing. Everything is fine with me and the baby, I'm not in the US and I think this is just how they do it here.

I kind of panicked and set up an appointment for next Wednesday (40+4) and then said we would go from there but she said she doesn't want me to go past 41 weeks (that following Sunday). Should I just go in earlier? I think you guys are going to tell me to just wait until my appointment on Wednesday. Just trying to talk it out with someone other than DH (who means well but is ready to get the show on the road).
