I read an article today that said "The most powerful aspect of white privilege is the freedom to remain ignorant about the realities of racism..." And I agree. While it may not be the only aspect, I think it's an important one. Being white gives you the privilege, but what you choose to do with it shows character. As @MommaBean said, there are plenty of people who recognize their white privilege and choose to educate themselves about internal racism. But until all Americans with WP do the same, the #BlackLivesMatter movement lives on. As it should.
Prayers to the victims of internal racism. And also prayers to the officers killed tonight in Dallas. No one deserves to die at the hand of hate.
Less serious note. My UO: I don't think Ryan Gosling is all that attractive. OH SHIT. FLAME AWAY
My parents paid for all of my college and living expenses. And living expense meant I had money to pay rent and bills. I was not required to have a job, but if I wanted to eat anything other than ramen and drink shitty beer with my friends I had to work. So I did. I kept a part time job through college and summers. I like to think I turned out not being a spoiled brat and knowing you have to work to have the things you want and need. I also am very well aware of how fortunate I was to not leave school with $50k in student loan debt. I think it's a balancing act for sure and can go either way.
My UO is going to be very unpopular. I'm tired of hearing about all of these police shootings. Yes, I think they're terrible and awful and very sad but I think it's media bs. When there starts being equal airtime for good things that people do then maybe I will care more. Flame away.
Blown away by "equal airtime for good things". What does that even mean?
I'm totally interpreting here, but my thought on the point she's trying to make is more about we need to do a better job on reporting the good things that are happening and not so much that we need to stop with the bad things that are happening. Loose example because I don't remember the details- someone attempted to shoot up a club or something somewhere (maybe SC?), but the shooter was stopped by a patron that was legally carrying a gun. That kind of story typically only gets light local media coverage even though a lot of lives were saved.
I know it's not perfect because part of the difference is the scale of the issue (i.e. 3 people shot isn't as big of a story as 50 people shot) and it's not how it was phrased, but that was my takeaway.

The thing is, there's only so much air time, and the point of news is not to make us feel good - it's to keep us informed and aware. It's unfortunate, but the need-to-know stuff is usually the bad stuff.
As for the story you cite, it sounds like any discussion about that event would be overshadowed by political rhetoric, so I can see why it wouldn't make the rounds.

I kind of think any news story during an election year is overshadowed by the politics of which side it supports.
I don't think the news is choosing to show more bad stuff over good, that's just kind of where the world seems to be right now and it's really sad.

The politicization of the news cycle is so frustrating to me. I have family all over the political spectrum, and I saw a meme pop up this morning with messaging to the effect of "those liberal black lives matter activists don't care about cops." This infuriates me on so many levels. Liberal or conservative, shouldn't we all mourn the lives of men and women who die in police custody unnecessarily? Shouldnt we all demand change? Shouldn't we all mourn the lives of the police officers killed last night in the line of duty? Shouldn't it be possible for me to believe that black lives matter while also respecting the hell out of my H's best friend, a dedicated police officer? Some issues should unite humanity, not divide us along political lines.
Ok. Sorry. I took a step back. I absolutely phrased things in a way that could have been said better. Yes I just think we need more equal airtime. I am a home health nurse in the inner city for those that think I'm all white privilege. Today, I'm actually scared to go see my patients. I shouldn't have to be but I am. I guess my thinking was if the media coverage were different maybe the situation wouldnt be such that now I'm shaking gathering blood draw supplies for a visit I do every week. I don't know. I'm sorry I stirred the pot do so much.

Well they're technically right that you have white privledge. Why are you scared? You think your patients would hurt you?

No.. Not my patients. I'm just going into rough areas and we have had some pretty severe protesting and gun violence after these situations before. I live in st louis.

Yeah I wouldn't want to be driving through protesting areas right now either

@MonaLisaRalphio is much more eloquent than I. The bolded is what I was trying to say.
@sjackson408 no one even touched the Ryan gosling comment!! To me, after watching the notebook and seeing his body in crazy stupid love, that man can do no wrong lol, but honestly I'm more into Colin Farrell I have no clue what it is but that man is super sexy to me.

I saw this whole world is falling apart. We used to live on Henry and Clayton. Now we live in Wildwood. These are supposed to be safe places. I just don't even know anymore.
