Spotting - Experiences PLEASE

10 weeks, 5 days today. I had to go to the ER yesterday for some spotting. Light pink when i wiped, none while i waited 3 hours at ER, red blood on speculum during pelvic exam, amd brown discharge this am. They did an ultrasound and the baby was flipping around like crazy and we saw the heart pumping away. Doctor still gave me paperwork on a "threatened abortion" which I guess means miscarriage. He also shared about his wife's 2 misscarriages. Guess he was trying to be empathetic but just scared me more. It's stressful because he basically said well its very little blood and baby is active but there's still that chance and nothing you can do about it at this point. He told me I could travel (we are moving) and go about my regular routine, because it wouldn't change anything either way but I just want to wait it out. The blood was minimal and baby was really active, why do I still feel like he had a tone of impending doom? I know he's a doctor, but how concerning is this really? How common is this? Experiences, PLEASE?

I have found some doctors always give you the worst case and prepare you for it, even if the likely hood is .00001%. I had some bleeding at around 6 weeks I think. Very minor amount of blood. Then I had a tiny bit of light pink at about 10.5 weeks. We did IVF, and I have been closely monitored by my team of doctors and nurses and none of them were concerned by that little bit of blood. It could be many things, but the odds were it was a little blood vessel rupturing. Throughout our IF journey I have learned that bleeding is very common throughout healthy pregnancies. I still report every incident, no matter how minor, to my docs. Thinking about you and praying it is nothing! Relax and put your feet up today.

  • It could be a lot of things like a SCH or jist Normal spotting! I would try to not stress since baby looked fine.  When is your next OB appointment? Can you call them and let them know about your ER visit?

they are really the best doctor to see

I spot pretty much anytime anything enters my vag. I've had one big gush of pink, but every other time has been brown. Be comforted that baby looked good. Did measurements look right for the heart rate (and vice versa)? That would be my main concern. If you've been working hard (which I am assuming you are since you're moving) and a little dehydrated, that could lead to spotting as well. Drink some water, take a rest, and unless the flow gets heavy and/or pink-red again, I would try not to worry. (Though I know that is much easier said than done.)

@katiebartton waiting to get to AL to schedule with new OB because I have to switch my insurance for this move. It has been a problem getting care with the transition. Will be calling as soon as we get in state. Hoping to leave tomorrow if all stays the same. Don't want to change coverage till we leave here though, just in case.

@cjs260 Ultrasound at ER was kind of crappy. Took forever to get a clear image and baby looked like it was trying to escape the wand lol He didn't take a heart rate or any measurements, said it was good the baby was so active and there was no doppler, just saw a visual of the heart pumping.

  • Spotting SO stressful and apparently totally normal. I had spotting early on and my doc put me on pelvic rest. I would take it easy for a few days which is really hard to do when you are moving... Hang in there.

I was also just told by a Dr. that we had a threarened miscarriage, blood all day Saturady. I put myself in bed, which made my bleeding stop.
We went in yesterday, and Dr. said everything looked great.
I know it is scary, but it apparently happens in 20% of all pregnancies.

  • I've had a lot of spotting, at least every couple of weeks (14w3d now) and even lost some mucus plug last weekend. Turns out I have placenta previa and am on pelvic rest until it (hopefully) moves away from my cervix!
  • I've had a lot of spotting so far this pregnancy. It really only let up in the last few days. I talked to both my RE and my OB about it (several times  :D ) and both said it's not concerning unless it's heavy, bright red, accompanied by cramping, etc. I would think if you had an u/s and baby looked good, you don't need to worry.

  • A threatened abortion doesn't mean miscarriage. Your baby is alive in well, and that is fantastic. Some doctors are morons.

Any unexplained bleeding other than spotting in early pregnancy is technically considered a threatened miscarriage. I wouldn't focus so much on the term; they have to label it as something and that is the medical term. Although any bleeding can be disconcerting, what you're describing doesn't seem to be cause for concern, especially given that the ultrasound revealed what it did. I think the doctor was giving you the typical, "we just have to wait" because he can't be sure what it means either and can't give you a guarantee, for sure, that everything will turn out OK. They can't do that at any point in pregnancy for anyone. But all that being said, the signs point toward harmless bleeding. I would focus on that!

  • ER doctors don't know how to handle pregnant women.  I'm actually surprised he was being somewhat nice, even if he was saying all the wrong things and being an all around idiot.  They usually have an arrogant attitude of "life or limb is my calling" and see a worried pregnant woman as a huge annoyance and inconvenience to "real" emergencies they need to attend to.  Okay, I'm done ranting about that.

ive had spotting.  Bright pink, fill up the whole tissue paper with blood spotting.  It also went away after a day and turned to brown spotting before it went away after a week.  I went to the clinic and they did a cervical exam, vaginal ultrasound where we saw a baby and was essentially given a pat on the head and told if I got painful cramps or the bleeding got worse (more pink/red and plentiful) to get seen and not to worry in the meantime.  And pelvic rest.  In my case, they think it was from working out too hard.

so, all that to say, I think it sounds like you are out of the worry woods.  And if you ever have a scare again, try to go to your OB asap and not the ER (unless you can't wait).

  • i wouldn't be too hard on the ER doc, probably trying to be as supportive as he knew how. i had 1.5 weeks of light bleeding, which has thankfully stopped. everything has been ok as far as i know, just dopplered yesterday.
