Re: What side do you sleep on?

  • How about some polls? I still sleep on my back and will until it gets uncomfortable. Last time that was 20 weeks, but I'm hoping longer this time since side-sleeping isn't as comfy for me.

I've been sleeping on my left side, with an extra comforter between my legs (and sometimes hugged). Not a pillow, but I'm guessing it has the same effect. I think, at least for me, it works best to easily adjust "fluff" amount for comfort.

For those of you who use pregnancy pillows - is it worth it? Right now I've just been using a body pillow between my legs, but I wake up when I switch to the other side because I have to adjust it. I have a pregnancy pillow, I've just been too lazy to use it - and it's been super hot too.

  • I'm a die hard tummy sleeper. I'm 20 weeks, we'll see how long she lets me do this.
  • I've always been a side sleeper and have always slept on my left side... but I swear every time I get pregnant I suddenly want to sleep on my back or right side

  • I'm just rolling with the (little one's) punches. Mostly I wake up on one side or the other, but might need to fall asleep on a side/belly tilt. I have a crappy boppy pregnancy pillow between my knees to help my hip pain. Occasionally I can fall asleep on my back if the pillow is under both knees.

  • I've always been a side sleeper with pillow (or sometime comforter) padding between my legs. Nowadays I try to sleep primarily on my left side, but wake up on my right side sometimes.
  • Right now, I switch sides throughout the night with a non-pregnancy pillow, but I may switch to my pregnancy one next week while hubby's out of town.
  • I'm a right side sleeper..got the.prego pillow and I'm not thrilled with it. Should have just gotten a body pillow. I might need to change sides since I have pregnancy carpal tunnel now..right hand blows up.every morning.

I sleep on either side throughout the night. I have a c shaped pregnancy pillow to help me transition from stomach sleeping to side sleeping. I've found it really helpful and comfortable. I still get hip pain a couple hours before I'm ready to get up - wish that would go away. My husband is still getting used to sleeping next to the pillow and has dubbed it the chastity pillow :)
  • Prepregnancy I was a belly sleeper but that got uncomfortable around week 10 so I transitioned to side/belly with my body pillow to kind of prop me. Around 14 weeks my hips started hurting and I inherited a snoogle. Now I'm mostly left side with the snoogle but I will sometimes flip to right side if my arm falls asleep. Adjusting to the snoogle took a few nights but I'm definitely glad I have it. I was skeptical before trying it and lucked out that I didn't have to actually but one. Looking back, I would not have felt bad spending the money on it if I had needed to.
  • I bought a ten-foot-long rectangular pillow that you can wrap around yourself as soon as I found out I was pregnant.  I have been unable to fall asleep any other way than face-down my entire life, but this pillow trained me to side-sleep in less than a month.  Now I don't need it, but I LOVE it.  It's like sleeping in a cloud.  The only problems are that my husband feels like it takes up the whole bed and my room has to be very chilly to prevent me from overheating inside it.

  • Prepregnancy, I was a back sleeper. Now I find it difficult to sleep on my side. With my previous two girls, I had already transitioned to side by 16 weeks. With this one, I just have all sorts of aches and pains on my side, belly feels super weird like it's stretching when I am on either side. The only difference between this and my previous two pregnancies is that this one I have an anterior placenta and I am older (2 and 6 years older). It sucks because I have a lot of anxiety during the night when I end up on my back :(

  • @meether, the articles I've read most recently said back sleeping in pregnancy is fine and to sleep how you're most comfortable. That the earlier worry about cutting off blood flow was overblown since there are 3 veins...one center and one on either side so it doesn't matter how you sleep.
  • Stomach sleeper! I have done it with my other pregnancies and will continue with this one as well. I just somewhat turn my hips so I'm not full on top of belly.
  • I've always been a side sleeper and have always slept on my left side... but I swear every time I get pregnant I suddenly want to sleep on my back or right side
Ditto. I used to sleep on my left side without any problems and suddenly that's the most painful for me!
  • I normally sleep on my stomach and still do somedays but I mostly sleep on my back with a ton of pillows around me.
  • Has anyone tried one of those silly pregnancy mattress things with the hole cut out for stomach sleeping that you see on Pinterest? I think I would sleep so much better if I could lay down on my stomach.

I was a left side sleeper, got pregnant and changed to a right side sleeper but now have to switch back because of the awful carpal tunnel in my right hand (fingers are okay, but the first knuckle of my thumb I think is just permanently numb at this point).  I just ordered a support brace and I'm praying it helps because I'm tossing so much.  Hope your's improves!
  • I am 100% a back sleeper but I am trying to mix it up and sleep on my sides a bit. It seems research is tending towards saying it doesn't really matter but my doctor still recommends left side sleeping if possible. I have a snoogle and I actually find it very comfortable how it cradles my head and neck and having the lower part between my legs helps my hips.  I attempt to sleep on my sides but I've usually shifted to my back by the time I wake up. I'm not going to go crazy trying to force the side sleeping, I'm just happy I'm still sleeping well!
  • I used to be a stomach sleeper but I never fully reverted back after DS.  I alternate between left and right sides.  I have three pillows at my head, one regular pillow between me and DH for back support, a body pillow between my legs and a small pillow for my arms.  I'm a bit of a diva!

  • pre-pregnancy I was always a side or stomach sleeper.  I switch sides throughout the night now.  My hips were hurting so I started sleeping with a regular pillow in between my legs whenever I sleep on my left side (H is enough when sleeping on my R side).  My SIL gave me her snoogle but I have yet to try it.

  • I am a stomach sleeper, and am going to sleep on my left side but waking up during the night mostly on my stomach. It wakes me up because it is uncomfortable.  During my last pregnancy I couldn't sleep without the pregnancy pillow, this time I can't get comfortable with it. I can sleep pretty well in the recliner though

My neighbor gave me a "belly pillow" for this!  I'm excited but it's a late pregnancy one so the belly hole is too big for me at the moment.  I need to try maybe putting the boppy in it to see if that makes it comfortable!

  • I sleep on my side always. I've never been able to comfortably sleep on my back, so that hasn't changed. I do kinda miss sleeping on my stomach a little lol. But as for sleeping on left side or right side, it really depends on what side I find more comfortable on that day. One day it's my left, the next it's my right lol.

Me too! I have always been a side sleeper, but with this pregnancy I keep waking up on my back.

Lately i also wake up on my back, even though i never slept on my back before pregnancy. I might need some support at my back while sleeping on my side so i canmot turn.
  • Same as the two PP's! Have always slept on my side and of course now I wake up on my back. Except as of this week, laying on my back causes my arms to go numb, so that will probably end soon...

Originally, I voted with "side, regular pillow" but I got a snoogle for my birthday- and I have to say last night was the best night sleep I've had in a long time! My back and hips don't hurt, i didnt wake up with a leg or arm asleep, never woke up on my back from accidentally rolling over. It is heaven. I refused to spend the money on it for so long, and my husband just decided to surprise me with it as part of my birthday gift, and I have to say it is worth every splurged penny.
