  • 45 minute naps are a dream to me. DD has an average nap of about 30 minutes.

Seriously, we average 10 minutes unless he's in my arms :(
  • I guess I need to be grateful :( I'm sorry you guys have even worse naps!!

My mom took Lo for a walk around the block and she fell alseep. Shes been asleep for 2 hours almost! But shes outside in her stroller and theres trees blowing and a pond with waterfall going so that probably is keeping her sleeping... But other then that I get 20-30 minutes. Max. Not to mention is taked at least half an hour to get her to even sleep.

But to answer you question: it better end soon.
  • Half an hour is the most we get in the crib. If I have him nap in the wrap or carrier we tend to get more like an hour, sometimes two! Might be worth a try if you're desperate.
  • We get a 2-2.5 hour nap every afternoon but only in her crib with black out curtains and white noise machine on. So if we're away from home the long nap doesn't really happen, so I try to work our schedule around being home for nap time.
  • I spend more time trying to get her to nap than she actually naps. She gives me 30 minutes, 45 minutes max.
  • We get 15-30 minutes every nap
  • They are SUPPOSED to be getting longer naps, like 1-2 hours, but mine only sleeps an average of 30 as well. I'm on a mission  this weekend to get her to sleep better though, and its gonna start with getting blackout curtains tomorrow.

I think once they start consolidating naps they might get longer??
  • It's called the 45 minute intruder. If it's consistently 45 minutes then your baby is likely waking up when her sleep cycle is transitioning. Google the 45 minute intruder and you'll see some ideas to fix it. If not then it goes away when baby starts consolidating their naps.

  • Yep it's like 30 minutes on the dot when she wakes from each nap! Today she had three 30 minute naps and one 1 hour nap. I'm also on a mission to get her to sleep better @fishee333 (although we already have blackout curtains)!

  • Let me know how your missions go and what you do! Mine is 30 min on the dot too. Black out curtains don't make any difference for me. But I hope you have luck!
  • Mine started napping longer when I stopped nursing to sleep. My theory is that he learned to fall asleep without my help, so when his sleep cycles transition he is able to fall back into a deep sleep. We've been traveling and in unfamiliar places all week, so he's been back to only 45 min... hoping for a return to longer naps soon.

I should add that usually only one nap and occasionally two is longer (anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 hours).

Here's what I don't understand... My baby has slept through the night before (not always lol) but has always taken horrible short naps... Why is it that they can transition at night but aren't capable during the day? Is their nighttime sleep somehow different? Surely he's transitioning through many sleep cycles to be able to sleep 10 hours straight right? This really has me confused lol
  • @mamadcb, was it hard to break the habit of nursing to sleep? I don't always do it, but when lo wants to nurse to sleep, he fights me tooth and nail to do it!

@mestokes I expected it to be really hard but I just do a little bit of upright rocking (so he isn't near my boobs) and kept all other parts of our nap and night routine the same. He really didn't fight it at all-- just talks and wiggles a little and occasionally fusses before falling asleep.

We just took a trip cross country and I did go back to nursing to sleep on the plane and when he really had a hard time settling in unfamiliar places (I think because he was overtired). Now that we're back I thought he would fight the transition back to nurseless sleep, but it's been fine! I don't know why or how I got so lucky.
  • Here's a list of things I'm going to work on this weekend as a part of my mission the get her to nap better:
    * Blackout curtains - got em todag, now just need to put them up
    * Nap time routine - we have already been doing one (book, lights off, noise machine) but I'm going to add in a short walk around the house before book. I read that this helps some babies calm down even more
    * Break all bad sleep associations/props. This is the tough one!! We haven't nursed/rocked/etc to sleep in months, but my LO is very dependent on her pacifier to sleep now. She wakes up if it falls out, and that's becoming a big problem with sleeping I've noticed. So we are getting rid of the binky!! We started last night and it was rough, but she was able to sleep finally without it.
    * Get night time sleep to be better.  If she is more rested at night, hopefully that means better naps. This goes along with the bad binky habit, which we worked on last night. After some fussing and crying, LO went from waking up a million times per night (because she needed us to put her pacifier back in in order for her to fall back asleep), to waking only 3 times!! This is amazing for us, and I'm super proud of our LO too.
    * Somehow help her learn to transition to the next sleep cycle. Still trying to figure out how we are going to do that. I think I may start with just letting her try to work it out on her own (leaving her for about 10 minutes before I go and get her).

@kaym6 I wish I knew why they can't as easily transition during the day if they can at night! That's why I'm working on getting her to be a better sleeper at night. I'm also hoping that the darker room will recreate the nighttime environment more.

@fishee333 maybe I'll have to try blackout curtains it's pretty bright in his room during the day! However he did nap an hour in his crib today one time the first nap! First time EVER. The other two naps were back to maybe 15 minutes but it did show me its at least possible! Lol
  • So LO took one 45 minute nap and one 2 hour nap today. I COULD NOT get her to take her morning nap, so we just let her play and have fun. She eventually fell asleep and slept so good, that I had to wake her (cringes at the thought of waking a sleeping baby). We've been implementing the "no tears" method for a couple of weeks and she has been going down for bedtime in less than 10 minutes (fx that it continues)! She also just learned to roll from back to tummy so I think that since she learned that, it has helped with her sleeping. I'm still working on naps, but I have hope that we'll get her on a good schedule.

We're also 6 days away from coming out of leap 4 :)

  • LO slept the best she has ever slept last night, and she took the best morning nap ever - 1.5 hours! The rest of the day was pretty awful in terms of naps, but that's ok, I'm still seeing it as a success.  I think I was a little off in the timing. No more pacifier for her, and I think it's helping her but she still wants it at naps. Hopefully it just gets better tonight and tomorrow!
  • An update to my weekend... we have had only a couple naps here and there over 30 minutes, though I didn't work as hard (I wasn't consistent enough, wasn't at home for each of her naps) as I had originally planned. It's so hard!! Nighttime sleep is a million times better, so I'm hopeful that naps are bound to get better as well! Silly babies, why is it so hard to figure them out?!
  • @fishee333 thats part of our problem, we aren't consistent with naps. We always have to go somewhere or what not. But we also had a few over 30 minutes. Lets hope it gets better!
  • How are naps going ladies? Any better? Mine have improved slightly. Her first nap tends to be anywhere from 45min-1.5 hours. On average its an hour. Yesterday we got a 2.5 hour nap BUT she had been up at 445 for the day so that was why. I have found that I stretched her from 1.5 hours between naps to 2 hours and its made a difference (unless of course she is noticably tired then I put her down then).  The rest of the days naps are about 45 min sometimes an hour. But she isnt fighting them as much either.

@cali1710 I am also finding his morning nap to be lengthening some finally!! The others are still the same
  • Morning nap was 2 hours yesterday! I was shocked. Then we had a 20 minute one and a 45 minute one haha. Baby steps!!
  • Naps are definitely improving! She doesn't fight me nearly as much as she was. I got an hour and 2 45 minute naps. And she's actually pleasant while she's up! Before she was like a little terror.

Over the weekend we had several 8 minute naps.  We're going in the wrong direction :(
  • Well overall naps are still pretty aweful, though it's getting easier to get her down at least. She takes four 30 minute naps a day. Over the past week, she skipped one of those 4 naps two times and ended up taking a longer (2 hour!) nap those two times. But I was in bed laying with her both times, and that's not something I can do every day! It makes me wanna figure out how to get her to just do 3 naps a day but it's just so hard. Everything about it is hard. Ugh.

ours were getting better. And then the 5th leap started yesterday. Everything went downhill. She's fighting then again. 30 minutes are back. Fml. She had a 2 hour nap today but it was in her stroller which I cant do 3-4 times a day everyday. I wish she had more of a nap routine. The last nap of the day stresses me out because it all needs to happen in a good enough time that she gets to bed on time. Cant go down too early or late. And if she fights it were off track. If she sleeps longer or shorter were off track. Sigh.

@cali1710 the last nap of the day has me in a panic every day haha I feel ya! I seriously feel like a crazy nap lady haha

@fishee333 when we dropped from 4 naps to 3 we had to move bedtime to super earlier there were some nights he was asleep for the night by 6 with bedtime routine starting by 530 For a while he fluctuated between 3 and 4 now it's almost always 3 unless we're out and he falls asleep in the car on the way home. Early bedtime is the only thing that kept us sane during the 4 to 3 nap transition!

He still fights me really bad for most naps and sometimes they're really short so maybe don't take any of my advice haha

@kaym6 our naps fluctuate between 3 or 4. It all depends if they are half hour ones or if I get an hour +. Her bedtime is already 6 (it's been 6pm for a couple months) so I cant do any earlier. Lets hope she will adjust! And I too feel like a crazy nap lady. They are the worstttt.

@cali1710 sounds exactly like what's going on over here! Not sure we would make it without that 6pm bedtime!

Honestly that few hours to myself are much needed.
  • @cali1710 since her bedtime is 6pm, what time does she wake up for the day and what time for a MOTN feeding-if any? Just curious because as of right now my LO goes to bed between 8:30-9 and I'm thinking about making it earlier to get some me time!

She usually wakes around 6. Sometimes 530 but I'll leave her in her crib until at least 6. Sometimes she doesn't wake until 630. All varies. She wakes around 1130 for a feeding but I don't know if shes hungry or habit. Sometimes she'll wake again around 4 breifly. The last week shes been in her 5th leap so weve had a few more wakings. The me-time at night is a huge help with dealing with the night wakings.

@JanuarysBaby1 my baby also has 6pm bedtime and wakes between 5-6 sometimes 630. I also try to leave him in his crib if not upset until 6 at least. He usually has no wake ups that require me to go in and resettle him on average. He has had a few rough nights with teething or in a leap where I would have to go in and resettle him though. Sometimes he will wake up and whine and unless he is crying I let him fuss and he generally falls back asleep. The earlier bedtime has been a lifesaver!
  • Anyone's naps getting better? If so, what have you done differently? Ours are still terrible! :/
  • Mine have been a teeny tiny bit better. Her first nap of the day I can usually get about 1.5 hours. Give or take. Some days its an hour some its two. Yesterday was 2.5! But the days before were 30 min but generally about 1-1.5 hrs. The rest of the day, unless I walk her in the stroller, its 30-45 min still. I found keeping her up a bit longer (unless shes rubbing her eyes earlier) has helped. Ive gone from putting her down at 1.5 hrs after waking to about 1h45m-2h. I can usually tell by how she does down how long the nap will be. If shes really fighting it itll be half an hour. If not itll be a bit longer.

Ours started getting better once we started sleep training.  Day care days are still hit or miss (yesterday he only took one 1.5 hour nap), but when he's home we us, we've been fairly successful at get three 1 hour naps.  This weekend the goal is to teach him that 4:45am is not an acceptable time to wake up for the day :)
